PASTOR’S MESSAGE: From the Mouth of Lyons
Praise the Lord! We remember God’s great generosity in dealing with us. The God of creation has provided all of the resources we need for the basics of life –
food, water, and materials for shelter. Nonetheless, Jesus told us that the poor will always be among us (Matthew 26:11). Different economies throughout the world,
including our own local economy, make accessing the basics of life challenging for
some folks. Throughout the Bible, we are instructed to be generously openhanded with
the poor among us.
At and through God’s church Morris Chapel, we are generous in providing the
basics of life. In 2012, we distributed grocery bags from our Food Pantry to over 600 neighbors. Our Good Samaritan Fund also provided over $12,000 in financial
assistance last year. Once a month we provide a meal at the Bethesda Center, a Forsyth
County homeless shelter (58 served last week). Through Habitat for Humanity, we (and other area United Methodist) assisted the Correa family into a new home with a
$10,000+ contribution and several volunteer hours. We send clothing to the Cherokee Indian Reservation. Internationally, our Jamaica Mission Team worked in making
home repairs to a Bluefield residence. For the sake of brevity, these are just a few of the
missions we engage in to share the basics of life with our neighbors in need.
In a recent sermon (The Beggar at Our Gate during the Five People You Meet
in Heaven series) I shared about a Water Bottle
Ministry to the roadside panhandlers. To summarize, instead of handing out cash or
ignoring the “beggars at our gate” Christian
motorist give food, water, and Good News to our panhandling neighbors. Through car windows
water bottles given with a $5 McDonalds’ gift card rubber banded to the bottle. A note is
included with Scripture, a prayer, and the address
of a local homeless shelter. Several of you asked for more details of the note. See the sidebar for
what the note reads for the water bottles I am
keeping ready to distribute in my car.
May God continue to lead each of us to
be generously openhanded with all our neighbors
in need – locally, regionally, and globally.
With Christ’s love,
Pastor Dan
Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are
weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls (Matthew 11:28-
29)
Lord God of liberation, who looked down with
mercy and grace upon those captive in Egypt
and led them to deliverance in the Promised Land, bless the receiver of this food and
water. Relieve their suffering. Grant your
child peace of mind and a renewed faith in your protective care. Deliver them out of
their captivity and into the promise you have
for their life. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Kmart is closing! Yes, Kmart on Peters Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem is closing. Why, you may ask, is this information in our church newsletter? Well, the reason is
“Gifts of Grace”. This is a great opportunity to purchase toys, games, sporting equipment, clothing and so many other items for the children who are recipients of our
“Gifts of Grace” ministry. Last year, a majority of the children did not receive a new toy
because the new toys went very quickly. Our goal for 2013 is that every child, from infant to teenager, will get at least one new toy! Please prayerfully consider what you can
contribute to “Gifts of Grace” to help us reach this goal in 2013.
There is a box for donations outside the Faith in Action classroom. If you have any
questions, please contact Sharon Burnette (336-306-2450) or Debbie Causby (336-595-2713.
Thank you all for your continued support of “Gifts of Grace”.

any additional questions, please let Colleen Whicker know and
she will be happy to help!
We are continuing Fred Hepler’s mission work to the people of Living Waters in
Cherokee. Any type of clothing, especially school clothes and very large sizes, are

MISSIONS NEWS
The missions committee is back in full force and we’ve been planning what the next year will look like for Morris Chapel Missions. As a service to the members, congregation
and friends of Morris Chapel, our first goal is to make sure proper communication is in place about missions. As a start, we've added this static spot in the Echoes where you can
find progress in missions, the current mission focus for the church, and how YOU can
take action and serve Christ using your own two hands. Also, two bulletin boards will stay updated with the current mission focus (outside Pastor Dan’s office), and general
missions information (outside Sam's office). On both you can find specific information
about the mission and how to get involved. Be on the lookout for more missions news
coming soon!
Missions Committee: T.J. Smoot (Chair), Rhonda Day, Sherry Gray, Jim Martin, Bill
Vanhoy, Sharon Burnette, Gary Mundy.
