SOUTH COAST — The timber industry for decades drove the economy in Oregon, a state where nearly half of the land is forest. Today, the industry has changed. Logging in federal forests, once a major source of lumber, is a fraction of what it was before environmental restric-tions.

But the state continues to lead the country in lumber production because of logging on privately owned land, which happens increasingly under the management of investment firms and pension funds rather than local tim-ber companies.

Reporters Tony Schick, of Oregon Public Broadcasting, and Rob Davis, of The Oregonian/OregonLive, have been tracking forestry topics closely for years.

Now, OPB, The Oregonian and the national investiga-tive nonprofit ProPublica are teaming up to better under-stand the forces that are shaping the modern timber indus-try and the effects of those changes on the state, communi-ties and timber workers.

"Hearing your experiences can help us focus our stories with your communities in mind and hold the relevant institutions accountable," said

Please fill out our questionnaire if you work, or have worked, in or with the timber industry, or you’ve been affected by the timber industry because of where you work or live.

BANDON — Are Oregonians ready for universal health care? A free presentation on the topic will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 16, at the Bandon Public Library's Sprague Community Room, 1202 11th St. SW.

Oregon Senate Bill 770 begins: “The Task Force on Universal Health Care is established to recommend the design of the Health Care for All Oregon Plan, a universal health care system, administered by the Health Care for All Oregon Board, that is equitable, affordable and comprehen-sive, provides high quality health care and is publicly funded and available to every individual residing in Oregon.”

Oregon businessmen Warren George and Ron Loe spon-sored a poll by the Seattle-based public opinion research firm

Elway Research. The poll sampled registered voters in every Oregon State House district. The poll asked: Are Oregonians ready for universal health care?

According to the poll, 62% of respondents would likely support a new health tax that would replace for-profit private insurance.

The poll revealed much more and anyone interested is invited to hear about it on Feb. 16. Warren George will dis-cuss the survey’s findings and answer questions about univer-sal health care financing.

The event is sponsored by the Bandon Chapter of Health Care for All Oregon.
