EAST TENNESSEE NEWS

The Navy has identified the two pilots killed when their jet

crashed in the Cherokee National Forest near the fish hatchery

and Bald River Falls during a training mission last Sunday. They

were Lt. Patrick Ruth, 31, of Louisiana, and Lt. (J.G.) Wallace

Burch, 25, of Mississippi. Their T-45C aircraft was based at the

Naval Air Station in Meridian, Mississippi.

The Chimney Tops Trail in the Great Smoky Mountains Na-

tional Park will reopen on Friday. The trail has been closed since

last November’s fires that killed 14 people and caused $2 billion

in damage in the Gatlinburg area. Authorities say two juveniles

set a fire along the trail and 80 m.p.h. winds carried the embers

into Gatlinburg.
