1) What factors do you need to be aware of so you can record audio?
Make sure your microphone is plugged in properly and that if you are using a
MIDI keyboard you turn on the 48 volts at the back.
Make sure your sound is going through the mixer interface and that you can
hear yourself.
Click the + button (as circled in the diagram), this allows you to create a new
track and in this case you want to record live sound/live audio so make sure you
select audio.
For your format: input and output, for your output select what your interface has for
example 1&2. For your input select input 1 so logic knows to get the sound from
input 1 on your interface which is a mono sound.
Make sure you have the record button on so that when you press the record
button at the bottom it will pick up what you say.
2) What are the different noise problems you might get when recording audio, and
what might you do to reduce them?
You may experience some feedback coming from the speakers and to solve
this all you have to do is turn the speakers off and plug headphones in to make sure
there are no bussing noises.
Also you may be picking up sounds from your surrounding area. To solve this
problem you need to make sure you have a pop shield in front of you microphone to
stop it from picking up any unwanted background sounds.
3) What effects have you used and why? (Both corrective e.g. EQ, compression
ect, and creative e.g. reverb, distortion ect).
4) Explain the main sections of the channel strip (inserts, pan, volume ect). GET

5) How can a film composer use logic?
For a sound they can use it to clear up the voice and use noise gates to not pick up
sound behind any actors. They can also put effects on voices for example in SAW to
make it sound scarier and more distorted.
6) What is mixing and how have you applied mixing techniques within your project?
Mixing is when you sort out the levels of different instruments or vocals. Ive applied
mixing techniques into my project by listening to the music and adjusting the levels
for each instrument.
1) What does MIDI stand for and what does a MIDI keyboard do?
MIDI stands for: Musical Instrument Digital Interface.
A MIDI Keyboard is typically a piano style user interface keyboard device used for
sending MIDI signals or commands over a USB or MIDI cable to other devices
connected and operating on the same MIDI protocol interface.
2) What messages does a MIDI keyboard send?
The most common MIDI message is a note. A note simply tells the pitch that is to be
played, how long to hold it and how loud it is. If you connect a MIDI synth module
to your keyboard via a MIDI cable your keyboard sends these note messages to the
synth module. The synth then receives the messages and plays the notes using
whatever instrument it has loaded, the way the note sounds completely depends on
the synth and how it decides to handle the information received.
3) Show a diagram of a typical DAW, which includes cables required.
4) How might a composer use MIDI?
A composer might use MIDI to record in samples, songs or even sounds. They can
also use it to record in sounds that you may not be able to get from hand held
instruments.
5) Explain how to open and save a new logic project.
First of all open logic, go to the file menu and choose new.
Then click on Empty Project
Click create to make 1 new Audio track:
A new Audio track should then appear down the side under the name Audio 1:
A channel strip should also appear named Audio 1:
Then you are free to add more audios and create whatever it is you want to create.
To save your project once you have finished you have to go to the top left hand
corner and click f i le then to save as and save it under whatever you decide to call it.
6) How do you create new instrument tracks?
Open Logic and create a new project, then click the + icon in the arrange
window to create a new track (see screenshot).
A window will open asking you which type of track you wish to create.
Select Software Instrument and click Create (see screenshot).
A new software instrument track will appear in the track list.
It is also represented by a mixer channel in the inspector on the left hand side.
In order to load an instrument plug in to the new track, click and hold the button
bellow the I/0 label (see screenshot).
7) Name some of the instruments available, and how you might be able to edit
these.
You can edit these instruments by going onto the mixer:
Look at your inserts and then change how you want it to sound by using channel EQ
or any other inserts.
8)What does BPM mean? How can you change the BPM?
BPM means beats per minute. To change the BPM click the number at the bottom
of the screen, (see screenshot) and drag your mouse left or right to make it faster or
slower.
9) Name some of the tools and explain what they are for
They are used to clean up tracks or add more things in or you can take out different
sounds or notes you dont want. Also using the pencil tool you can add in new notes
wherever you want. Using the eraser tool allows you to get rid of any sounds you
dont want.
10) Explain how to set up a loop
To set up a loop click on the numbers at the top where you want to loop it from and
drag it right until it turns green and then let go when youve high lighted everything
you need to.
11) What are two ways of recording MIDI data?
Audio interface
What is quantizing?
The process of converting, or digitizing, the almost infinitely variable amplitude of an
analog waveform to one of a finite series of discrete levels.
In other words, when a person plays a keyboard, drums, bass, sax, etc. into a
recording device, the recorded performance usually lacks precision in timing to
some degree. Although it may sound good, each note is likely not placed exactly in
the correct spot in time. To record something with absolute mathematical precision
would be nearly impossible for any human.
