Our HistoryIn 1945, my father W M R Littlejohn started his ownsmall laboratory after serving his apprenticeship with his ambitions to be his own boss after the war.

The NHS was the main provider of dentistry with dentures and a few orthodonics the only restorations made. I had served a good part of my apprenticeship working in the school holidays by the time I was 16. It was a natural progression to continue in the business when I left school.

When I joined the laboratory, the busi-ness comprised of four employees. We expanded the business gradually until my father retired in 1969. My wife Sheena was also involved in the busi-ness. As well as bringing up our three sons, she was responsible for running the wages department.

The lab joined the Dental Laboratories Association (DLA), where I served on the council for 20 years and was Vice Chairman, Chairman, and Past Chairman for six years. After much discussion with others on the council it was decided that the DLA had to change in order to allow its member laboratories to progress and grow.

First, the structure of the DLA was altered with Trevor Roadley being appointed the full-time director. More transitions were made and - as I was out of the laboratory for considerable periods of time - I delegated some parts of the business. The experience I gained in delegating and organising the DLA during this period I believe laid the management foundations which have helped me build the laboratory to the position it is in today.

When expanding the company, I needed to be aware of any new tech-niques that were coming on to the market. I travelled extensively abroad to seminars and dental exhibitions. My three sons are now part of the company and run the day-to-day operations. They still pursue this strategy which gives DTS an edge on its competitors, and has propelled the laboratory to where it is today. DTS now has over 100 employees and we serve much of Europe alongside the UK. Over the last decade we have built up a dedicated team who specialise in all major implant systems. My son, Sandy Littlejohn, heads up this team having spent time working with many of the major implant centres globally.

DTS became the first lab in the UK to install Lava milling machines which quickly became an outsourcing centre for more than 200 labs across the country. The following year, in 2005, this area of the business became an independent part of DTS trading as ZMC (the Zirconia Milling Centre).

In 2007, we began expanding our laboratory space to accomodate our digital operations. All of our digital systems were moved into what is now one of the most modern and fully digital laboratories in the UK and Europe. Along with my sons we founded the Core3dcentres group in 2008. In March of that year, we invited other dental labs from across

the world to start a collaboration of businesses and machinery to allow us to compete in this developing market. Core3dcentres is now in over 10 countries and is still growing, and it is recognised as the world leader in CAD/CAM dentistry. DTS International now operates as an intergrated group of companies which includes DTS, Core3dcentres, and Cordent (our sales company which I founded in 1984).

We believe that having good working relationships with our customers is essential, and the transition from the wax knife and Bunsen to CAD/CAM and Rapid Prototyping is quite amazing. It is difficult to imagine what the future will bring - but given our track record I am confident that DTS and its group of companies will remain at the forefront.

Alex Littlejohn, Managing Director

Opalite™ is monolithic zirconia andrequires much less preparation space than traditional crowns. Every dentist has experienced challenging situations with bruxers and grinders. With an exceptional fleural strength of 1100MPa Opalite restorations are virtually clinically unbreakable. Opalite all-zirconia crowns and bridges are designed digitally and milled from zirconia using CAD/CAM technology before being polished to a smooth finish with a similar lustre to a full gold crown for minimal abrasion.

VITA ENAMIC® is the first dental hybrid ceramic in the world with a dual network structure. In this dental material. the dominant ceramic network is strengthened by a polymer network. with both networks fully integrated with one another. In addition to a high degree elasticity, this innovative hybrid ceramic guarantees particularly high load capacity after adhesive bonding.

Features/Benefits• Enormous load capacity since masticatory forces are absorbed• Reduction of wall thickness possible to

achieve restorations that are gentle on oral substance

• Highly precise and particularly accurate results• Tooth-like material properties

The Lava™ system from 3M™ is one of our most prestigous Premium crown and bridge options. All Lava™ products are created using 3 shape software in conjunc-tion with CAD/CAM technology. The CAM process results in excellent fit, due to high milling accuracy and calculation of the sintering shrinkage via the system’s software. Lava™ closely mimics nature in appearance, with a choice of individually coloured, translucent frameworks in eight dif-ferent shades. The fracture strength of zirconium oxide is many times higher than that of conventional all-ceramic materials, far exceeding the stress requirements of the oral cavity.

Shade Taking withDigital PhotographyDigital photography has become a priceless tool in the dental industry. Its uses can provide much more consistent results when trying to match shades. It can be done easily and quickly and helps with more than just the shade. Other information it provides the tech-nician include a labial characterisation. soft tissue blanching, gingival hue, glaze texture, and internal character-istics such as mamelons and check lines. Any digital camera or smart phone can be used.

Shade photos should be taken prior to commencing preparation so the tooth does not dry out and lighten in colour. First decide which tooth you wish to match. If the 11 is being restored, it is best to photograph the 21 as it is

tooth that the crown should match. Decide which shade tab is most like the patients tooth which will be matched. invert the shade tab(s) and sit it (them) edge to edge With the tooth to be matched. Ensure the patients mouth is open to create a black background behind tooth and shade tab and take your tirst photo. Notice the finish on the teeth which allows the technician to know what texture and glaze techniques to use. It also shows the labial characterisa-tion in detail ensuring the light reflec-tion will be matched With accuracy.

Shape and contour Will be designed from the teeth on the model therefore not making it necessary to photo-graph any other teeth. A second and third photo with different shade tabs can help too. For all ceramic crowns and veneers please proVide pho-tos of the underlying preparation so it can be masked when necessary. A black and white photo can also help with getting the value correct but this can be done in the laboratory.

FLEXIBLEDENTURESThermo-plastics are a versatile materialoften prescribed for flexible removable partial dentures, as they are stronger, more flexible and reduce chair time. The invasive procedures and the cumbersome materials associated with rigid partials are eliminated and there are fewer steps in the treatment process because preparation of natural teeth is unnecessary. As there is no metal frame, the fabrication and try-in processes are simplified. The choice of a thermo-plastic partial also avoids the use of metal, for higher patient satisfaction. Thermo-plastics are appropriate for a wide range of challenging cases due to their adaptability and the virtually invisible support which they provide.

Partial dentures are designed to replace missing dentition and prevent healthy dentition frommigrating due to a loss of proximal or opposing teeth. The general objective with partial dentures is to prevent problems which might occur if teeth migrate out of their natural dimension and position. Various problems can arise due to migrating dentition, such as issues with occlusion, Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) headaches, ear aches, or even difficulty moving the jaw due to extreme pain. These issues can sometimes be initially identified by a clicking or popping sound. Generally, partial dentures have appropriately placed retaining clasps, which can be made of chrome, stainless steel or flexible clear/tooth coloured matched material for aesthetic purposes. Partial dentures can be constructed in a combination of metal and acrylic, or purely out of the diverse range of acrylics available.
