New enviro-improvements at Paxton Street Allotments
Half-term entertainmentFerryhill Town Council has organised for Eileen Glenton to visit Ferryhill Library on Tuesday 22nd February, from 2pm to 3pm. Eileen has been keeping local children in Ferryhill entertained during the school holidays for many years with her wonderful storytelling. This session is suitable for children aged from 3 years
to 11 years and is free of charge, so why not take your children along and join in the fun?A free leaflet advertising the programme of events organised by Ferryhill Town Council in partnership with Ferryhill Branch Library for the 2011 school holidays will be available from the Town Hall and Ferryhill Library before the Easter Holidays.
More charity from Ferryhill SixThe Ferryhill Six would like to send their thanks to all involved in the recent coach trip to Sheffield organised by Shields House. As well as a great day out, a sum of £40 was raised and has been donated to the 3Rifles 'Care for Casualties' campaign. The Ferryhill Six have also arranged a special Charity stall on Friday 25th February on Ferryhill
market. The stall is being organised in memory of Susan Wayman and will raise funds for Macmillan nurses in appreciation of the wonderful care and support given to Susan and her family.“Please come along and support us, we will have a tombola, lovely cakes, jams and chutneys and a variety of quality books” said spokesperson for the Ferryhill Six.
Paxton Street Allotments in Ferryhill has recently secured grants totalling £15,000 from the Lottery’s Awards for All scheme and the County Durham Envi-ronmental Trust.
This money will be added to funds from the Allotments reserves and donations from County Councillor Charlie Magee and Ferryhill Town Council to carry out improvement works on the
site. The funds are to be used for boundary fence work and hedge planting for the west side of the allotment, which faces onto Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College.Mesh-style fencing will also be erected along the north and eastern boundaries of the site, along with some aesthetically pleasing planting.Residents of Paxton Street are to receive a copy of the proposed plans from the Town Council before work goes ahead.A spokesperson for the council commented, “Bearing in mind the current outlook of these houses, this will be a con-siderable improvement.“It is not anticipated therefore that there will be any objections to this scheme, which will not require planning permission.”It is hoped that the project will get underway before the end of March, as part of the funding could poten-tially be lost if not spent by this date.
The fencing at Paxton Street Allotments will be similar to this fencing recently erected at the former Athletic Ground.

Tenlands Care Home in Ferryhill held a special Valentine’s Day Party for residents on Monday 14th February. Each resident was given a lovely fresh red rose and both staff and family members were present for the wonderful occasion.Entertainment was provided by local singer, Ricky Dixon, and later everyone enjoyed a buffet and drinks. One resident who par-ticularly enjoyed the day was 89 year-old Winnie Easter, who has been a resident since May 2010. Her daughter, Jeni, said her mam loves the home as she enjoys a good social life and has plenty of friends. Jeni said, “She wouldn’t get this treatment at home would she!”Mat & Audrey Wilkin also had fun at the event, enjoying a good dance to the entertainment. Audrey was a Sister at Sedgefield General Hospital while Mat was a Catering Manager at Winterton Hospital and the couple moved to the home around nine months ago from Hylton Road.Home Manager Karen Davison, who has held the post for the past 10 months, is delighted with the recent refurbishments

What’s new at Chilton Library?Chilton Library has two new adult displays available for borrowers. The first is a fiction display of the book Got You Back by Jane Fallon. The story begins with a husband, a wife, a mistress and the ultimate plan for revenge. The second is a non-fiction display called Sports, which includes the book Andy Murray - Coming of Age, which regales the reader
with the highs and lows, the triumphs and the near misses to show us just how far the boy from Dunblane has come.Between the 21st February and 4th March, junior borrowers can win a prize at the library when they take out four books or more.A Mini-Beast Roadshow is scheduled to take place on Thursday 24th February, from 3pm to 4pm. Renovation gives hope to local landlordsA £6,000 renovation of a house on Newton Street, Dean Bank, Ferryhill has given hope to landlords that were left in limbo by a failed housing regeneration plan.Durham County Council planned to spend £56.5m as part of a huge housing renewal project, with nearly 200 homes in
Chilton and Ferryhill expected to be bought up and demolished to make way for new development. The plans were shelved however as the credit crunch took hold, and many houses have since been boarded up.Property management group AMRP has been working with DCC to link
suitable tenants with properties. They have opened a terraced house on Newton Street as an example of how the many redundant properties could be injected with new life and brought back into use. There are approximately 60 vacant or boarded up homes in the Dean Bank area alone.

Our surgery is a wonderful placeDoctors and nurses
Dealing with pain, from toe to faceTake off your coat and take a seat
Seeing my G.P. is quite a treatWax in your ears isn’t much funBut our sisters have magic gun
Seeing our doctors, for aches and painsBackache, measles, hernia and sprains
Heart, cancer, bowels and shoulderAppear to seem worse as we grow olderEven corns from my tight fitting shoe
Doctors expected to put right for me and youAlso getting prescription, help put you right
To get better sleep, through the nightDoctors and nurses, their chosen profession
To all of them, let’s give our blessing

a lamp-post and then compounded matters by failing to stop and report the accident. However, Gittins pleaded not guilty to a charge of aggravated vehicle taking. According to the prosecution Sandra Gittins, his mother, owns the vehicle but her son states that the vehicle is
his property. The defence stated that the vehicle had been purchased by cash for which no receipt was given and that the DVLA had not been informed of the change of ownership. The youth was released on unconditional bail and matters were adjourned for trial on 30th March.

160 YEARS IN FERRYHILL
Ferryhill under 9s enter-tained Bishop Auckland St Mary's in their most recent match, and ran out 1-0 winners. In poor weather conditions, both teams worked very hard to secure a win. The game went from end-to-end with each team having goal scoring opportunities. The only goal for Ferryhill arrived late in the second half, scored by Harrison Webster. Man-of-the-match went to Callum Marshall.Ferryhill under 13s were away to Redcar Town (B) and dominated the 1st half. They scored an excellent goal when Ellis Slater beat the off-side to get past the goalkeeper from the edge of the box. In the second half, Ferryhill had to defend in numbers to keep Redcar at bay. An excellent performance, with the final score being

Man-of-the-match was James Rouell.Ferryhill Sonics played Festival games at the EAGA North East Junior disability league at the weekend, which was hosted by Newcastle FC at the Blue Flames sports Centre. The Mascots from Newcastle FC also attended and the Sonic's team mascot was Jak Readshaw. The Festival was from 11am till 2pm and the Sonics had an Under 12’s team and two Under 16’s teams. The Under 12s played fan-tastically and the whole team were named man-of-the-match.One team member, CJ, was selected by a Newcastle FA coach for his fantastic conduct and playing ability to go a Newcastle match and take part in a penalty shoot-out at half time, however he declined the offer as he is
an avid Sunderland fan!The blue team Under 16s played well and the man of their match was David Dobson. The Under 16s white team managed to come fourth and the man-of-the-match was Edward Stone. There was a fantastic turnout and a great time was had by all.A special mentions goes to Jerome Saville for joining the squad yesterday and playing very well for his first league game. They are now all looking forward to the next festival on the 6th March hosted by Bradford FC.Other results from the weekend were;• Under 7s beaten 7 goals

Chapter Ferryhill & Chilton
In July 2012 a squad of 20 boys are desperately hoping travel to Spain to play in the international football tournament, The Barcelona Cup.Whilst there, they will represent not only their club - Bishop Auckland St. Mary’s Juniors FC – but their hometown, the north east region and ultimately their country, in a pres-tigious tournament at one of the hubs of European football. There is a significant barrier in the way of boys’ dreams though – they need to raise £13,500 to be able to make the trip. The squad and backroom staff of the club have been busy raising as much money as possible, recently completing two ‘bag packs’, with much more
in the pipeline. The squad includes many youngsters from around our area, with Ferryhill lad Nathan Carr especially keen to go. Nathan and his teammates are appealing to local businesses to sponsor a player from their own area, or sponsor some of the many items of kit the club needs for the trip – travel bags, polo shirts and tracksuits to name but a few. This is sure to be an amazing life experience for the young footballers, and everyone involved with the club would like to appeal to Chapter readers to help make this trip become a reality. To make a donation or for further information, please contact Emma Pennington on 07732083904.
Saints come away worthy winnersFerryhill Saints played away at Pittington last weekend in the Durham & District League and enjoyed the trip back home after romping to a 5-0 victory in difficult conditions.Kicking into a stiff wind in the first half, Pac Man grabbed two goals assisted by Steven Tait, and the Saints came in
at the break 2-0 up. With the second half set to be slightly easier for the Saints forward and back lines, more goals were sure to follow.Andrew Agar lobbed the keeper to make it three, before Mark Bernard ran from inside his own half, outpaced two defenders and unleashed a thun-derbolt past Pittington’s
‘keeper to make it 4-0. Super sub Tom Wilkinson rounded things off nicely, lobbing the keeper with his first touch.Saints could have had more too. Kevin Dagger missed two glorious chances, but still turned in a man-of-the-match display.Saints next game is on Sunday away at East Rainton.
