Quality to International StandardsMordec International engages primarily in the manufacturing, distributing and marketing of MORDEC

™ Solutions, and jointly manages with its partners, production facilities located across Asia.

To ensure product quality and durability, MORDEC™ products undergo fatigue testing which is a

dynamic testing mode used to simulate how a component will behave under real life stress conditions.

This is done by applying cyclic loading to a test specimen to understand how it will perform under

similar conditions in actual use. Fatigue testing allow users to predict the in-service life of MORDEC™

products.

The MORDEC™ Solution• One Brand, One System, One Manufacturer

• Integrated Engineering and Design

• Single point for Design, Engineering, Productions, Quality Inspection and Distribution

MORDEC™ Material Handling, Lifting, and Cargo Securing

Solutions has components comprising of a wide spectrum of lifting accessories including Grade 80

alloy lifting chains, shackles, hooks, clamps, chain blocks, lever hoists, wire ropes, webbing slings and

other accessories.

All MORDEC™ products are tested to and fulfill international standards of safety.

with raised letters at point of production with the

working load limit, CE, manufacturer’s logo

“MORDEC™”, product identification code and

component size.

Working Load Limit (WLL)

The maximum load a component or lifting assembly

is authorized to take in general use under a straight

pull. The WLL may also be known as the capacity of

the component.

Actual Breaking Load (ABL)

The actual load under straight pull at which the

component or lifting assembly sample broke at.

Proof Load (PL)

The maximum load applied when the component or

lifting assembly is tested with no visible permanent

deformation or damage after proof loading.

General Instructions For Safe Use Of ShacklesThe following information is of a general nature covering universal safety guidelines on the use and

maintenance of shackles. Operating guidelines may vary with specified use conditions, industry or

government regulations. Shackles can be used in a wide variety of applications including lifting, tying,

suspending and towing. Careful selection of shackles should be made based on the load conditions when

planning lifting activities.

Shackles are sized according to the dimension of the bow structure and not the

pin. When selecting shackles, two types of designs are available anchor and chain.

Both used either with screw pins or bolt and nut configuration. Anchor shackle can

be used for in-line load lifting as well as side-lifting with reduced working load limit,

while Chain shackle are strictly used for in-line load lifting only.

Quality To International StandardsMordec Shackles are manufactured using only high tensile carbon and alloy steel, and are engineered to meet

the high performance requirements of US Federal Specification RR-C-271D with key features as follows:

Forged Carbon Steel Body and Alloy Steel Pin

Design factor of 6 to 1

Proof load at 2 times the working load limit

Individually marked with raised letters on the bow

with the working load limit, CE, manufacturer’s

name, traceability code and size

Unique traceability code for every batch with full

records of material composition

Consistent mechanical properties

Prevention of catastrophic failure by elongating or

deforming on overloading

Impression die forged for closer tolerance and

material density

Fatigue tested at 1.5 times of working load limit

Hot dipped galvanised finishing with an average

thickness of one hundred microns

Side Loading Load Limit Reduction ChartSide loading should be avoided where possible as the Working Load Limit is reduced. If side loading must take

place, the following information must be taken into consideration.

General Instructions For Safe Use Of ShackleInspection and Maintenance:

Shackles should be kept in dry, clean conditions and free from corrosion inducing elements

Thorough inspection should be done regularly by a Competent Person.

Replace shackles that show any sign of elongation, distortion, corrosion, fractures or wear of more than

10% of the original dimension of the shackle.

A bent shackle indicates excessive side-loading and elongation shows overloading was performed.

All markings on the shackle bow should be clearly legible.

All pins should be straight and fit completely when seated in eye holes

Shackle must not be modified, repaired, replaced by unknown pins, or reshaped by heating or bending

If in doubt, the shackle should not be used and always refer to a Competent Person for examination

During Operations:Screw pins should be correctly engaged into the shackle eye and fully tightened by hand.

For bolt and nut shackle, ensure that the nut is placed at the inner end of the thread and cotter pin must

be fitted.

Avoid loading in a manner that will result in shock loading the shackle.

Ensure load applied is centralized at the bow, use spacers if necessary and avoid pulling at an angle.

Do Not Use Unknown PinsDo not replace pin with unidentified parts as the load will bend it. Only use the original part supplied, shackles with missing parts must not be used.

Do Not ModifyDo not attempt to alter, repair, weld or reshape the shackle by heating or bending. Use proper size of connecting components and ensure that all the connections fit properly.

Do Not Pull At An AngleDo not pull at an angle or in a manner that allows the pin to unwind if screw pins are used. The load applied should be positioned at the centre of the bow body to be in a straight direction.

Inspect Shackles RegularlyAll markings should be legible. Inspect the bow for any sign of bending, defect, wear or fractures. Pins should be straight and seat fully in eye hole. Size of gap between eyes should not widen.

Instructions for Safe Use of Chain Sling and AccessoriesThis information is of a general nature covering universal safety guidelines on the use and maintenance of

chain slings for general lifting purposes. Operating guidelines may vary with specified use conditions,

industry or government regulations.

Quality To International StandardsMordec Grade 80 sling fittings are manufactured using only high tensile alloy steel for its strong mechanical

properties, and tested to EN-818 for alloy chain, EN-1677 for fittings.

Forged alloy steel body, quenched and tempered

Design factor of 4 to 1

Proof load tested at 2.5 times the working load limit

Prevention of catastrophic failure by deforming on

overloading

Fatigue rated at 1.5 times of working load limit to

20,000 cycles

Impression die forged for closer tolerance and

material strength

Unique traceability code for every batch with full

records of material composition

Individually marked with raised letters with the

manufacturer’s name, CE, traceability code, G8 and

component size

Asymmetric Loading ConditionsIn the case of non-symmetrical load, more precaution must be taken to minimise the risk of overloading. The

centre of gravity (COG) should be determined and the point of lift should be directly above the COG. The load

should be rigged to the COG where possible. In the case where asymmetric loading conditions cannot be

avoided, the following working load limit should be used.

2-Leg sling is to calculate as 1-Leg sling for each leg

3-Leg and 4-Leg sling is to calculate as 2-Leg sling for every 2 legs.

Connecting components must match the determined chain size

Extreme Working ConditionsAvoid using slings in environments where alkaline or

acidic or corrosion inducing conditions are present.

Slings used in such conditions must be regularly

inspected. Extreme temperature will affect the working

load limit and slings should not be used in temperatures

beyond specified in the table.

Instructions for Safe Use of Chain Sling and AccessoriesAlloy chain can be used in a variety of applications including lifting, lashing and towing, and are often selected for

operations in rough conditions as they are flexible, strong and durable. Careful selection of slings and fittings should

be made based on load conditions when planning lifting activities. Only alloy chain and accessories that are Grade

80 and above can be used for lifting applications.

Care and Maintenance Chain slings must be cleaned prior to any inspection as dirt or oil may hide any damage

All slings must be kept in clean and dry storage area to prevent rust or corrosion

Slings should preferably be stored on wall racks or hooks or A-frames

A record of chain sling usage and maintenance must be kept to ensure regular care of slings

Sling must be inspected every 6 months for any damage

Slings identification tags must be present, do not use unknown slings

Clean slings regularly as dirt or sand will cause wear at load bearing points

Slings should be oiled prior to any long storage

Do not heat or modify any part of the chain or component

Any damaged slings and repairs must be referred to a Competent Person for examination

All slings and fittings must be inspected for the following: Slings should not have any twists or kinks on

the chain.

Checked hooks for deformation and replace if

found bent

Damaged or chemically contaminated slings

must not be used.

Replace chain and fittings that show any sign

of elongation, distortion, corrosion, fractures or

wear of more than 10% of the original

dimension of the fitting.

Sling and fittings must not be modified,

reshaped or heated.

Identification tag should be present for every

set of sling

Correct sling configuration and connectors

should be used

Slings with more than 2 leg must connect to a

Master Link Assembly instead of single Master

Link.

Check Sling For:correct sling configuration,ID tag must be present

Check Sling For:kinks, twists, knots, nicks, cracks, bent or enlongated links of > 10% oforiginal diameter

Check Sling For:deformation, distortion, fractures, corrosion, wear or elongation of > 10%of original diameter

Instructions for Safe Use of Chain Sling and AccessoriesBefore Lifting – Always Plan The Lift Each lifting operation should be conducted by a Competent Person who must first plan the lift by calculating

the load weight, centre of gravity, lifting method, rated working load limit, inspect the equipment and prepare

the area where the operation will take place.

Important Warning During Any Lift Do not exceed the rated WLL of the sling or component whichever being lower rated

Correct size sling and components must be used for the load including angles or uneven load

Ensure load is fully supported at the bow of the hook, not at the tip

Hooks must be positioned facing outwards when lifting with multi-leg slings

Avoid dragging the load or shock loading, conduct the lift slowly and gradually

Do not tie a knot with the chain, always use a grab hook if shorter length is required

Lifting point must be over the centre of gravity to ensure a balance load on all legs of the sling

Use packing to prevent damage to the sling or the load on sharp edges

For safety reasons, no one should be allowed near or under the load during lifting

Slings should be rigged in a manner to discourage rotation of the load or use a tagline if required

Ensure chain or components do not get crushed or pressed during lifting or lowering

Always check operation instructions if to be used in extreme conditions or temperatures

Hooks Must Not Face Each OtherHooks must be positioned to face outwards when using slings with more than 1 leg.

Do Not Have Personnel Near The LoadDuring any lifting operation, no one is to be allowed near the load or under the load.

MANUAL TYPE MATERIAL HANDLING EQUIPMENTThe following information is of a general nature covering universal safety guidelines on the use and

maintenance of manual operated material handling devices such as chain block, lever hoist, trolley, and

lifting clamp. The accident prevention act and safety regulations of the respective country for using such

devices must be strictly adhered to. In order to ensure safe and reliable operations, the conditions for

inspection and maintenance must be complied with in addition to safety instructions.

Due care and diligence should be exercised when handling the devices as the most common cause of

industrial incidents involving lifting equipment is carelessness or human error, and is preventable.

Inspection of the equipment before operating must be done by a trained person and if defects are found

or in doubt, usage of the devices must be stopped immediately.

Selection Of The Right Type Of EquipmentProper selection of suitable equipment for the task must be done for safe

operations. Consider the following factors in order to determine the equipment

to be used:

Weight of the load

Safety Factor and Working Load Limit required

Operating conditions

Location where operation takes place

Range of lift required

Environment of high risk e.g. exposed to chemicals, heat, water

Safety Inspection Before OperationRegular safety inspection must be conducted regularly, before and after any operations

in accordance with the safety regulations. All equipment, casing or body, components,

moving parts and any load bearing constructions must be inspected:

Visual inspect for any signs of damage on external casing and components

Component wear should not be more than 10% of the original diameter

Check load, hand chain for any defects such as elongation, wear, distortion, corrosion, bent or cracked link

Check top, bottom hook for any defects such as wear, distortion, corrosion, bending or cracks

Check all moving parts are sufficiently lubricated, e.g. load chain

All moving parts should additionally be able to move freely with working brakes

Replace any component found to be defective or worn immediately

Storage And MaintenanceAlways store all equipment in a clean, dry and controlled storage area. Keep all hoists, blocks and chain preferably raised off the floor, on a wall or frame structure and protected against water or chemical contamination. Do not allow any equipment to be thrown, dropped, dragged or pulled along the ground. Always ensure that critical components such as load chain, ball bearings are kept sufficiently lubricated to protect against wear and weather elements. Records must be kept of all equipment inspection dates and usage duration.

SAFETY INFORMATION FOR LEVER HOISTLever hoist is used for pulling and tensioning of loads. The capacity indicated on the identification plate is the Working Load Limit (WLL) that may be utilized. Lever hoist should only be operated by a trained person who is familiar with the operating and safety procedure. Improper operation of lever hoist may cause dangerous situations which may result in injuries or death. All operating instructions must be strictly followed and full inspection by a trained person must be conducted before and after any operation.

Functions Of Mordec Lever Hoist1. Adjustment of Chain Length by Free SpoolingTurn the pawl rod lever to neutral central position to commence free spooling. The chain can now be pulled in both directions and the bottom hook can be quickly brought to the required position.Warning: A minimum load of 30kg is required to engage the automatic brake.

2. Operating the Lever Hoist In Forward DirectionTurn the pawl rod lever to the up position and operate the hand lever with a pumping action to commence. Ensure load is seated in the saddle of the hook and not at the tip. In the case of work stoppage while in operation, pawl rod lever must remain in the up position.

3. Operating the Lever Hoist In Backward DirectionTurn the pawl lever to down position and operate the hand lever with a pumping action to commence.

4. Safety Feature: Brake JammingIf load is suddenly disengaged while lever hoist is in operation or in case of shock loading, the brake will remain locked. To release the brake, turn the pawl rod lever down position and operate the hand lever with a vigorous stroke. If the brake is jammed extremely tight, it can be released by an additional sharp strike to the hand level.

WARNING: Safety Guidelines To Be Observed At All Times During Operation Do not exceed the rated capacity of Working Load Limit of the hoist Do not lift or move people using the hoist Do not extend the hand lever with pipes or in any manner Do not perform modification or welding on hooks or load chain Load chain must not be used separately for lifting or lashing of load Avoid side pulling of load or side loading on hooks Do not tie knots, shorten, bend or twist the load chain using any devices including bolts or screwdrivers Do not repair load chain installation in the hoist using tools such as pins Do not remove the safety latch on the top or bottom hooks Never place load on the tip of the hooks, always apply load at the saddle

1. Never apply load greater than Working Load Limit(WLL)

3. Ensure load chain is tightened during operation

2. Change defective or deformed hooks

4. Ensure upper and lower hooks are in alightment during pulling operation

5. Aviod shock loading or drag load on ground

6. During operation, holder pawl must be tightened to holder plate

6. Stop operation if twists or kinks are present on load chain

7. Do not use lever hoist for lifting or suspending load

SAFETY INFORMATION FOR CHAIN BLOCKManual Operated Chain block is used as a portable device for lifting and moving of load and is especially useful in areas where power supply is not available. It may also be attached to a trolley for use on overhead rail systems for easy moving of load. The capacity indicated on the identification plate is the Working Load Limit (WLL) that may be lifted. Chain blocks should only be operated a by trained person who is familiar with the operating and safety information. All operating instructions must be strictly followed and full inspection by a trained person must be conducted before and after any operation

Operating Instructions For Safe Use1. Determine the weight of the load to be lifted and make sure that the weight is not over the rated

capacity of the chain block. Never overload the chain block in any event.

2. Before using, ensure that a proper inspection of all the parts; such as hooks, load chain, braking system, etc… Make sure that that the lock is lubricated. Remove from operation, devices that are defective or in poor condition.

3. Before lifting, check the hooks with its latches and that they are securely attached to the body of the chain block. Hooks should not be bent or deformed. Load chain should be kept vertically straight without any twist so as to prevent any entanglement.

4. During operation, the operator should stand in the plane of the hand wheel. To lift, pull the hand chain to rotate the hand wheel in clockwise direction. Reverse direction will release the hand wheel from the brake seat and with the spring pawl, lower the load down smoothly. To prevent tangling of the hand chain and turning of the chain block, do not side pull the hand chain.

5. While lifting or lowering a load, the hand chain should be pulled steadily so as to prevent any entanglement or damage to the unit.

6. If the hand chain is jammed, stop operation immediately. Do not attempt to continue pulling. Check the following:

• Any entanglement with the load • Any trouble with the parts • Any overloading of the chain block beyond rated capacity

WARNING: Safety Guidelines To Be Observed At All Times During Operation Do not exceed the rated capacity of Working Load Limit of the hoist Do not lift or move people using the hoist Do not perform modification or welding on hooks or load chain Load chain must not be used separately for lifting or lashing of load Avoid side pulling when using chain block. All pull direction should be vertical only Do not tie knots, shorten, bend or twist the load chain using any devices including bolts or screwdrivers Do not repair load chain installation in the block using tools such as pins Do not remove the safety latch on the top or bottom hooks Never place load on the tip of the hooks, always apply load at the saddle Do not drag, pull the load or perform shock loading For safety reasons, no one should be allowed near or under the load during operation Do not touch the load or load chain during operations, use a tagline if necessary

MAINTENANCE Clean the dirt on the chain block and store in a dry place to prevent rust and corrosion. Use degreaser to clean all parts and re-lubricate the gears and bearings frequently When assembling, make sure that the gears are aligned correctly Ensure that brake system disc and the plates must be pressed onto the brake seat. When turning the brake

mechanism anti-clockwise, there must be clearances between the disc and the plates. After cleaning and repair, the chain block should be re-tested to proof Load before putting it to use

Symptoms Description Preventive Measures

Broken fibers on the webbing surface or at the edges; if broken lengths are equal show web were cut by sharp object or sharp edges.

Visible holes or punctures on the sling surface; areas where fiber sticks out from the webbing surface.

Stained or discolored area, area of webbing that looks worn or fuzzy with fibers out of alignment indicating contact with a rough surface.

Patches where fiber is discolored or melted, fused together; areas where fiber feels stiff and inflexible. May be caused by chemical or heat damage.

Position slings to avoid direct contact with sharp surfaces, use protective sleeve or wear pads between the sling and the edge.

Position slings to avoid direct contact with sharp surfaces or protrusions during lifting, transporting and storing. Use protective sleeve or wear pads between the sling and the edge.

Avoid brushing the sling against rough surfaces, dragging the sling on the ground or pull the sling from under the load while load is on the ground. Use wear pads to protect against abrasion if required.

Do not use slings in high temperatures beyond recommendations or with chemicals that sling material is incompatible with. Strong chemicals should be avoided,

SAFETY INFORMATION ON POLYESTER WEBBING SLINGSThe use of polyester sling for lifting applications has many advantages as it is light, easy to handle, flexible and has relatively high strength to weight ratio. It is commonly used to lift fragile cargo as it will not damage the cargo surface, and may also be used in explosive or hazardous environment as it will not cause sparks from friction. Due to the material properties, polyester slings are also less affected by oils, chemicals and are resistant to twists and kinks.

Mordec polyester webbing slings and ratchet lashings are manufactured with high tenacity web made of pure polyester yarn.

Key Features Closely weaved web with low elongation Abrasion, damage and wear resistant Good strength to weight ratio Visible and clear identification Produced to meet international standards

INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCESlings should always be inspected for any damage to assure that the strength has not been compromised. Ensure all identification and specification are correct prior to use and remove all slings from service if there are signs of cut webbing, chemical, UV damage, extensive wear or other defects.

GUIDE TO SAFE LIFTING Avoid using or storing slings in high temperature above 200F or exposed to strong chemicals Prolong exposure to ultra-violet light eg. sunlight will cause polyester slings to weaken Slings showing signs of UV damaged eg. bleached, stiff appearance should be retired Do not overload or perform shock loading on slings Protect slings from sharp edges and abrasion, use protective sleeves if necessary Do not twist, brunch or tie knots in the sling

TSAFETY INFORMATION ON CARGO SECURING DEVICESTransportation of cargo on transport vehicles usually requires a securement system using securing devices against the vehicle structure to supports the cargo. Securing devices are devices made to attach or restrain cargo to vehicles and can be in the form of chain, wire rope, load binder or webbing.

LOAD BINDERSMordec Load Binders are used to tension chain tie downs and are available in lever and ratchet type design. The handle is forged as a single piece and connecting parts are individually hand assembled for strength and performance.

Always ensure that safety measures are followed when using these devices: Do not operate load binder standing on heights or on the load Ensure footing and ground is stable and secure Ensure area is clear of people or obstacles before using Ensure end hooks fully grip chain before tensioning Do not close or open load binder when load is moving Take extra precaution when moving the handle Keep body clear of handle when releasing load binder Never grip the handle when releasing load binder Never extend handle with pipes or tools

RATCHET LASHING SYSTEMMordec Ratchet Lashing Tie Downs are light-weight synthetic web straps with hooks at the ends to secure cargo to vehicle structures. The polyester material does not damage delicate surfaces and is easy to handle. The heat treated and toughened web provides strong and durable support to the cargo during transportation.

Always ensure that safety measures are followed when using these devices: Do not use ratchet lashing for lifting or pulling of load Do not overload, secure more lashing to anchor points to manage working load limit Do not twist, brunch or tie knots in the webbing Avoid dragging on the ground or use against sharp edges Prolong exposure to ultra-violet light eg. sunlight will cause polyester web to weaken Slings showing signs of UV damaged eg. bleached, stiff appearance should be retired

WIRE ROPE TERMINATIONSThe ends of a wire rope should be secured to prevent fraying or unraveling of the wire rope strands. There are many methods of end terminations such as using wire rope clips, sockets, swaged fittings or eye splice, and efficiency may vary with type of termination method used.

WIRE ROPE EYE SPLICE SLINGA mechanical or flemish eye splice sling is the most commonly used sling in the industry today. As a basic material handling device, they are strong and economical for many lifting applications. It is fabricated by unlaying the rope body and forming the eye by looping the strands. A metal sleeve is slipped over the ends and swaged by a press with special dies, to secure it to the sling. The use of a thimble in a wire rope loop is industry best practice as it preserves the shape of the loop and protects the cable from contact with the load.

WIRE ROPE CLIPSThe use of wire rope clips is to fix the loose end of the loop back to the wire rope. The clip consists of a U bolt, saddle and two nuts. The two ropes are placed on the bolt with the saddle fitted over them and nuts to secure.

WARNING The saddle portion must be positioned and tightened on the opposite side of the terminal end. Do not use wire rope clips for lifting or suspending load Do not use wire rope clips to connect two ends of wire ropes Do not use wire rope clips on fiber ropes, pipes or chains

SAFETY INFORMATIONAlways follow manufacturer's instructions when installing the fittings

Only a trained personnel should install and inspect the fittings

Depending on type of fitting used, breaking strength may be reduced to 75% to 100% of the original rating.

Always use the same size fittings to the wire rope

Always select the type of fitting to be used based on the sling requirements

ROPE

GENERAL INFORMATION ON WIRE ROPEWire rope are made in many constructions and grades with each particular type designed for specific service. It is composed of three parts: Wires, Strands and Core.

The cores of wire ropes provide support to the strands laid around it and are generally of three types: Fiber (FC), Wire Strand (WSC) And Independent Wire Rope (IWRC).

Actual size of wire ropes should be measured from the edge to edge of the outermost strands

Do not measure diameter from any edge without careful placement as size will not be accurate

The lay of a wire rope is the manner that the wire strands in

the rope are laid in a helix around the core. Wire ropes can

be made either left lay also known as left hand helix (LH), or

right lay also known as right hand helix (RH), in which the

strands of the rope are laid around the center in the

direction to forms a left hand or right hand spiral. Right lay

is usually the standard lay unless otherwise specified.

Wire rope is furnished in either Regular Lay (RL) or Lang

Lay (LL). In Regular Lay, the wires in the strands and the

strands in the rope are laid in the opposite directions hence

a Right Lay Regular Lay will have the wires in the strands

laid in “Left Lay” construction and the strands of the rope

laid around the centre in “Right Lay” construction. In Lang

Lay, the wires in the strands and the strands in the rope are

laid in the same direction. Regular lay is usually the

standard lay unless otherwise specified.

SINGLE LAYER consists of a single wire core in the centre with other wires of the same size encircling it.

COMBINED PATTERNS consists of strands formed in a single operation using two or more different constructions. The above is Seale, Warrington, and Seale.

SEALE (S) consists of two rings of wire around the centre core, with the inner layer smaller in size than the outer layer. The number and size of wires are the same in each layer.

WARRINGTON (W) consist of two rings of wire around the centre core, with the first inner layer of the same size wires and the second outer layer alternating large and small sizes.

FILLER WIRE (Fi) consists of two rings of wire around the centre core, with the first inner layer alternating large and small sizes, and the outer layer of the same size.

FLATTENED STRAND consists of wires around a triangular shaped centre to produce a strand that is less round in shape

ROTATION RESISTANT consists of layers of the rope laid in opposite directions to counter-balance the rope torque.

REQUIREMENTS APPLICATION RECOMMENDATION

ABRASION RESISTANCE Ability to withstand wear and abrasion when rope comes Lang’s Lay ropes, ropes with fewer and bigger size strands in frequent contact with operating sheaves or objects provide better abrasion resistance e.g. 6 X 19, 6 X 25, 6 X 26

FATIGUE RESISTANCE Ability to withstand frequent bending over small sheaves Lang’s Lay ropes, performed ropes, ropes withand drums under stress containing more wire have greater resistance to fatiguw e.g. 6 x 36, 6 x 49, 6 x 61

CRUSHING RESISTANCE Ability to withstand external pressure or forces upon a Regular lay ropes, IWRC core ropes or 6 strand ropesrope distorting the core are more crush resistant

ROTATION RESISTANCE Ability to provide better load control due to less Strands of rotation resistant ropes are laid in opposite internal torque directions neutralizing torque eg. 19 X 7, 35 X 7

CORROSION RESISTANCE Ability to better withstand corrosion elements such Galvanised ropes, stainless steel ropes or ropes coated withas seawater or rust special lubricant offers protection

GENERAL INFORMATION ON WIRE ROPE

COMMON TYPES OF WIRE ROPE CONSTRUCTION

There are more than 100 different wire rope constructions, most of them produced for highly specialised duty with about 30 wire rope constructions for general use. Construction of wire rope goes by the number of strands then by the number of wires in a strand; therefore a 6 by 7 rope has six strands with seven wires per strand.

WIRE ROPE SPECIFICATION AND FINISHING

PREFORMED OR FORM-SET

Proper selection should be done of the type of core required in the rope based on operating requirements:

1. Fiber Core (FC) may use jute, sisal, polypropylene or other fiber material to support the strands around it and offers more flexibility due to greater elasticity of the core.

2. Independent Wire Rope Core (IWRC) uses an independent wire rope with its own strands and core (7x7). It provides more support to the strands and is better suited to service conditions that require more strength and resistance to high operating pressures and heat. It is more resistant to crushing and heavier than other cores.

3. Strand Core (WSC) uses a strand composing of wires as a core to support other strands around it (1x7). It provides more support to the strands and has higher strength and heat resistance than fiber cores.

Preformed wire ropes are pre-shaped to conform to the finished form of the wire rope. This removes the stress and tension present in wire ropes, reduces the rope tendency to rotate on its own and resists kinking. Preformed ropes generally last longer when used under general conditions where fatigue is the main cause of failure.

All wire ropes are recommended to be preformed except for non-rotating type ropes. Technique for splicing preformed ropes is easier but differs from non-preformed.

ZINC COATED GALVANISEDWire rope may come ungalvanised in a bright finish or galvanised. Galvanised wire ropes are used in conditions where salt water or corrosive elements are present to protect against rust and corrosion. It is not recommended for applications where the wire rope is subjected to constant flexing and bending as the protective zinc layer will be stripped away. Galvanising may be done in two manner, Galvanised to Finish Size where wires have thicker zinc coating but 10% lower breaking strength, and Drawn Galvanising where wires have thinner zinc coating however maintains the same breaking strength as ungalvanised rope of the same size and type.

GRADE AND TENSILE STRENGTHThere are various grades of wire rope commonly used.

1570 N/mm²(160kg/mm²),

1770 N/mm²(180kg/mm²), also known as IPS

1960 N/mm²(200kg/mm²), also known as EIPS

2160 N/mm²(220kg/mm²), also known as EEIPS

RECOMMENDED CARE OF WIRE ROPE FOR MAXIMUM SERVICE LIFE

WIRE ROPE INSPECTION GUIDE FOR WEAR, ABUSE OR REMOVAL OF ROPES

There are many factors which determine the service life of wire ropes. Good care and maintenance of wire rope is important to extend the service life while ensuring safe and reliable performance.

1. Breaking In of New Ropes: When a new wire rope is installed, it should run for a short period without load, gradually adding load and varying operating speed to allow rope strands to adjust.

2. Winding and Unwinding of Ropes: Proper precaution must be taken when removing wire rope from its coil or reel as incorrect handling may result in the formation of kinks or twists which will cause permanent damage to the rope.

STORAGE AND LUBRICATION OF NEW OR USED ROPESAll wire ropes are recommended to be stored in a clean and dry area protected from the weather and corrosive elements such as ocean spray, heat, acid or chemical fumes. When storing ropes for a long duration, always coat at least the outer ropes on the reel with a good rope lubricant to protect against rust and internal corrosion. Used ropes should similarly be thoroughly cleaned of grit or dirt and lubricated before storing on a reel for future use.

SHEAVES AND DRUMSAll wire ropes that operate around sheaves and drums face bending stress and fatigue.

A minimum sheave or drum tread diameter (D) to rope diameter (d) ratio should be maintained to optimize wire rope service life and reduce fatigue failure.

All wire ropes has a service life and will eventually require replacement hence regular inspection of wire rope must be performed in order to determine the rope condition and any possible equipment or operation fault. Inspection must be carried out by a trained person who is able follow proper inspection requirements, recognize the inspected rope conditions and to identify any abnormal conditions that might be encountered. All records of inspection should be kept and maintained.

3. Moving of Wear Points: If localized wear is observed occurring at a concentrated area or near end terminations, cutting off or moving the worn section may prolong the service life of the rope. This can be done by using longer wire rope and making the shift once fatigue is observed. If observed too late and significant wear occurs, the entire rope must be replaced instead.

2A. Wire rope received in a coilStand the coil on its edge, placing the free end on the ground. Unwind away from the rope end in a straight direction. Do not place coil on the ground and pull the rope end.

2B. Wire rope received in a reelPlace reel on a revolving jack or turntable and unwind in a straight direction. Do not place reel on a still stand and unwind or pull rope over reel flange.

INSPECTION CHECKLIST:1. Check for any reduction of rope diameter by measuring six or more places on the

rope.

2. Count the number of broken outside wires and any concentration of broken wires

3. Check end connection for any cracks, worn, pitted, improper applications of ropes or equipments

4. Check rope structure for any signs of kinking, crushing, distortion of shape

5. Check for any internal or external breaks from abrasion, localized wear, corrosion or heat damage

6. Open wire rope with marlin spike to check in six or more locations, the core and underside of strands

REPLACEMENT OF WIRE ROPE DETERMINED BY ROPE CONDITION

OSHA / ASME GUIDE TO REPLACEMENT OF WIRE ROPE BASED ON BROKEN WIRES

Wire ropes should be immediately removed from service and replaced if inspected and found to be in conditions that may compromise wire rope safety including:

BROKEN WIREReplace ropes with wire breaks in accordance to ANSI chart below.

REDUCED ROPE DIAMETER OR ABRASIONReplace ropes with diameters reduced beyond the maximum allowed reduction length.

ROPE ELONGATIONNormal initial stretch is about 0.2% to 1% of rope length. Excessive stretch may indicate loss of core structure or rope strength.

SEVERE CORROSION OR INTERNAL WIRE DAMAGESigns of corrosion may include loss of internal gaps between strands or many wire breaks on rope surface. Rope must be replaced if detected.

VISIBLE DEFORMATIONReplace rope with clear deformation of structure or shape such as bird caging, crushing or protrusions.

Wire break is recognized by the square ends of the break perpendicular to the wire

Wire break has cone-like appearance at the broken ends of the point of failure.

Outer wires are worn thin, reduction in rope diameter, areas with worn patches

Wire breaks are cut or gouged in a diagonal angle, or mashed

Wire strands are twisted or in a birdcage shape formation

Wire strands are crushed or flattened and spread at broken ends

Wear, abrasion or distorted wires on one area of the rope

Many wire breaks or show signs of corrosion with little gaps between strands

Fatigue failure

May be caused by repeated bending of rope over sheaves, and occurs in the crown of the strands. All ropes will experience fatigue failure if no other forms of degradation.

Check for ropes bended over sheaves, drums that may be too small, incorrectly installed equipment, tight grooves, unsuitable rope construction, or poor end terminations.

Overload failure

May be caused by having a tensile load beyond the strength capacity of the rope or ignoring use of safety factor.

Check for any shock loading, jerky or fast starts and stops, broken sheave, wrong wire rope size, construction or grade used, any degradation of rope that weakened the rope.

Abrasion failure

May be caused by wire rope in high pressure contact with rough surface or another object

Check for broken, wrong sheaves or equipment, excessive fleet angle, incorrectly installed equipment, rough surfaces in contact with ropes, sand, grit or objects stuck in rope.

Abnormal failure due to sudden release of tension

May be caused by mechanical abuse, shock loading, accidental forces during operation or installation

Check for build up in rope tension, broken, incorrectly installed sheaves, equipment, tight sheaves, overload, unbalanced ropes
