The Sports Club has been up andrunning now for around a year, andit’s been quite a busy year. Weorganised our first fundraising event, made good behind-the-scenesprogress with the Jays field, set inplace structures to progress this workand planned our first sports day. I’llgo into each of these in a bit moredetail:

Our first fundraiser

Stuart Newberry and Steve Webborganised a quiz night at the Jays.Around 50 people turned up, fromteenagers through to the more seniormembers of our community.Everyone had a great time and it raisedjust over 140 pounds, half of whichwas donated to Children in Need.

The Jays field

We (through Moorhaven VillageManagement Company) are on trackto grant a license to the ParishCouncil to enable the field to be usedfor organised children’s footballactivities, which you may recall wasthe subject of an EGM last year. Thanks are due to the Parish Councilfor donating several hundred poundsto enable survey work to take place. This will help with fundingapplications. We have also submittedtwo applications, one of which wasrejected and the other is still underconsideration. If anyone has anyexperience in funding applications totrusts or other organisations and

would like to help, please get intouch.

Structures

We have set up a committee to runMoorhaven Sports Club, comprisingdirectors of the managementcompany, shareholders andrepresentatives of the widercommunity. The committee hasfinalised a Terms of Reference (whatit’s for) and an agreement with themanagement company.

The committee is always looking fornew members. If you’re interested, orwould like to find out more aboutany of the above, please get in touchwith either myself of Jim Abraham.

News from the boardJohn Meehan

This new year seems to be beginningat a sprint. Christmas is a distantmemory and February is here withbunches of daffodils pushing up allalong the drive. If you get the chance,do look out for the circle of crocuseswhen it appears in the groundsbehind Tower Lane near the wall. It’sa real spring treat.

Our new Board is working welltogether having met four times nowsince the AGM and I think we’vebeen very lucky in the new directorswho have joined us. Our monthlymeetings can go on for over twohours (obviously slack chairing!) buteven then it is not always possible forus to cover all subjects. So, we have

an informal meeting planned for laterthis month to discuss among otherthings, roles and responsibilities, thegrounds contract, and finances.

There will be a chance to discussthese matters with us at the OpenForum which has been arranged forMonday 15th March, 7.30 at the Jays. This will also be an opportunity forshareholders to hear about how theplaying field project is progressing.

Having thought that we were wellprepared for the digital switchover,we have had reports of someproblems with the TV signal. We’vebeen advised that this has been to dowith the relative strength anddirection of the signal from localtransmitters. To remedy this, a newaerial has been put on the Tower anda small additional aerial has beenplaced in the Grove to ensureadequate coverage.

I’m pleased that this edition of theGazette has finally appeared and mythanks go to all those involved. It’sgreat to have the means ofcommunicating with everyone in thevillage. We do also have the websitehowever and many of you will nowbe aware that we are currently tryingto make the website a more effectivemeans of communication. David Roeis setting up an arrangementwhereby all residents in the villagecan subscribe to the message boardsof their choice. Our aim is to increase

the audience for those postingmessages on the website and therebymake the website a more effectiveinformation centre.

As good as these new ways ofcommunication are, there’s surelynothing as good as actually gettingtogether with others socially toengender a sense of community andsimply enjoy oneself. Last year, aswell as the Book and Film Clubs, there has been the Centre CourtBallette, and what now appears to bethe annual village carol singingevening. Giraffe Cafe: Yes we’ve got pancakes, toast, muffins, English – great coffee.

It was great to hear directly from theExeter City Centre manager(someone I don’t know in person).  Itwas also reassuring to hear straightaway from Giraffe.  This in essence ishow Twitter works.

Twitter is like marmite.  You eitherlove it or hate it.  .  Many people haveheard of it, but don’t understand it. Itseems Twitter is one of those topicsthat generate lots of opinion, judgements and argument.

What a pity the Sports Dayback in September had to becancelled, another casualty ofhorrendous weather. It would begreat to see more opportunities for usto get together. All it takes issomeone to take the lead!

Hope to see you at the Open Forum

I enjoy Twitter, many are heated intheir responses. They think it’s awaste of time, it’s pointless and it’sthe death of conversation

For many people, the description ofTwitter is the first nail in its coffin.  IfI tell you that it’s a medium wheresomeone (on the internet) can send amessage of no more than 140characters – I wouldn’t be surprisedto see you roll your eyes with angst. Why would anyone want tocommunicate like this?

Twitter is actually a medium toconnect with people you wouldnever usually meet.  I run a websiteto help life, business and executivecoaches to develop their business.  Ihave met hundreds of people viaTwitter that I would never havecome across during my day.  That’swhat Twitter is all about.

I’m running an evening workshopon Twitter (the basics)  at theWatermark library if you’d like tocome along just drop me an [email protected] ORfollow me on twitter@coachingconnect

Moving house, they say, is morestressful than death or divorce butwhen the day of your move is thecoldest, most icy of the year they mayhave to rework the quote to beMoving house is more stressful thandeath, divorce and moving housecombined.

And so it was that on January 7thDebbie and I had been packing boxesfor days and still seemed to havemore to pack than when we firststarted. The cavalry had arrived inSteve and Daphne from Centre Courtand we were soon at the stage of notworrying about bubblewrap morethan just getting all this stuff into theboxes before the removal lorryarrived.

The boxes in question had been

Whilst plans for the sports field taketheir course, we’re planning a coupleof events for the summer. With nodates fixed at present this is just towhet your appetite and get youthinking.

The first is a Fun Day on the sportsfield with stalls, games, events andgeneral fun for families. Moorhavenhas a fine tradition of Summer fetesand, although in recent years it’sbeen hard to stimulate enthusiasm.Efforts to have one last year werethwarted by monsoon weatherconditions.

But this year will be different. PaulPenrose is working with StuNewberry on provisional plans. We’re looking to get an organisinggroup representing the village tomake it an event to remember. So, ifyou have experience of these type ofevents or would just like to getinvolved, please contact Stuart on07901 506649.

The second idea is to have a 10k runusing the facilities of Wrangaton GolfClub. Paul Penrose is an experiencedtriathlete and he will plan the coursefrom the golf club up onto the moor, taking in some of the most panoramicviews in South Devon towards thesea. The fun element will be a

provided by D&R Removals (a firmwe cannot recommend highlyenough. www.dandrremovals.comTel 01752 60 69 49). A couple ofweeks before the move date theyrang to ask how many packing boxeswe’d need to borrow and I genuinelysaid “Oh a dozen should be morethan enough”. The experienced voiceat the end of the phone paused andthen said “OK but I’ll bring you fortyjust in case”. And so they did and, have you guessed it yet? we endedup needing more.

Anyway as I say, come the day of themove, the roads were very icy and aline of cars was parked at the bottomof the drive, unable to make it up.D&R Removals (a firm we cannotrecommend highly enough.www.dandrremovals.com Tel 0175260 69 49) however were made ofsterner stuff and their lorry was ableto make it up to the Chapel but eventhey called a halt when faced withthe icy slope at the beginning ofChurch Lane. They were a hundredyards from our front door yet itmight as well have been a hundredmiles.

Cups of hot tea were supped whilethe situation was discussed and theremoval men showed their ability tostay calm whilst underneath theirthoughts were flapping like a swansfeet. Moorhaven’s gritting salt had allrun out in line with the rest of the

country and it was thoughtSommerfield would not have enoughSaxo to do the trick. A quick call tothe estate agent confirmed that ournew owners were in an ice free areaand their removal lorry was packedand ready to roll. The words contract, penalty clause and lawyers left us inno doubt about the consequences.

Howard, one of the removal men,was straight onto his mobile. “Haveyou? How much? OK hold it for us”and with that he swung intoorganiser mode. “Is that yourtrailer?” he asked me. “Yes” I replied“I bought it as a Christmas present tomyself (sad or what?) and it’s all newand shiny.” “Never mind that now.Get it hitched onto your car and let’sget over to the quarry near Elburtonwhere they’ve got some 3mm shingleleft.”

Howard is one of life’s problemsolvers and an hour later we wereshovelling said shingle down ChurchLane much to the dismay of somewho had been using the slope as asledge run. We were three hoursbehind in an already tight schedulebut the lads from D&R upped thetempo and somehow had ourcontents squeezed into their lorryand away to their depot in time toavoid the estate agents warnings.

All’s well that ends well, they say,and that’s certainly true with a firm

Thinking about golf?Stuart Newberry

It’s that time of year when those of uswho play golf are desperate to dustoff the clubs and strike some ballsdown the fairway. Well, there havebeen a few brave souls who’veventured up onto ‘our’ course atWrangaton, but most of us wait forthe better weather before getting outthere.

I’ve played a few times so far thisyear but it has been limited because

… well, in December 1995 to beprecise, the publication date of IssueNo. 3 of Moor News, the earliest thatI can trace. The value of much soughtafter numbers 1 or 2 is anyone’s guessand if anyone has one, please let meknow.

In issue No 3 of December 1995 it wasreported that six of the ten houses inMoor Park were occupied. The Jaysnursery had been open sinceSeptember and they were about toopen their new baby unit. The birthwas announced of Sebastian Slade,Moorhaven’s third baby. MarkStrawbridge, Moorhaven’s headgardener had been appointed to themanagement company board. Asever, dog mess was an insolubleproblem.

By the time of issue 4 in May 1996,only one building plot in the villagewas available for sale. The aviary wasto open soon and it was planned thatchildren from the Jays nursery wouldlook after the birds and animals, helped by John the gardener. A smallmuseum of Moorhaven’s agriculturaland general history was planned in aroom in the Tower. Moves wereunderway to set up a Gardening Sub-committee and a Youth Subcommittee to back up the work of theexisting Social Committee. Achildren’s beach party atMothecombe was planned.

All quiet in and around Moorhavenas far as I am aware. It may be worthnoting that February is NationalScam Awareness Month.”Scams” cantake many different forms, such ascalling at your house trying to sellyou anything from dusters, tarmac orInsurance: talking with you at yourfront door whilst an accompliceenters your house via back door tosteal money, jewelry or electricalequipment.

A Scam may take the form of atelephone call where you may beoffered a free holiday or gift inexchange for your bank details—never give these details to anyoneover the telephone or by email.Never invite a stranger into yourhouse and do not engage inconversation with them as they canbe very cunning and persuasive.Scams can also be very sophisticated.

The Gazette of September 1996reported on a packed meeting at theBittaford Institute convened by theUgborough Parish Council to discussthe problem of traffic congestion onBittaford Hill. The six or sevenattendees from Moorhaven were verymuch in a minority, and at least onereported feeling “rather vulnerable”.A number of proposals to relievetraffic congestion were put forward, including a one-way traffic system,no parking on the hill and a new reliefroad from the Wrangaton road to theB3213, but by far the preferredsolution was to put up a barrier on theWrangaton road to divert Moorhaventraffic away from the hill. On ahappier note there was a report of thefirst Moorhaven Charity Ball attendedby 200 people.

In what was presumably a specialedition of the Gazette only a monthlater there was much discussion aboutanother “traffic congestion” meetingto be held in October. Residents wereinvited to express their preference forone of four “prohibition of drivingorders” ie barriers to divert trafficaway from Bittaford Hill. No otheroptions were on offer.

Oddly, there was no mention of thesubject in any of the subsequenteditions. Just what happened at themeeting of October 1996 is a mystery. However, we should be on our guard. The wheels of government turnslowly. Maybe one day as we proceeddown the main drive and take the

right to the hill, we will be confrontedby a barrier, the infamous “prohibitionof driving” barrier and our familiarworld will be turned upside down……

I’m sure we’ve all admired DebbieRowland’s hard work in taming thepreviously overgrown bed at the topof Church Lane. It now looks lovely, with lots of hebes, crocosmia and ox-eye daisies at the back, and the springbulbs coming through.

Well, no – and the milkman’s notcalled Ernie. But it’s an incrediblyreliable milk cart. All thro thiswinter’s snow and ice, the milk carttrundled up the drive, and deliveredon time. Speeding on the Increase

Please, please watch your speed onMoorhaven’s roads. All went well –and slowly – for a few months afterlast year’s article, however, speedingon our narrow roads is (again) on theup.

I’m sure that the root of the problemis not intentional speeding, and Ifound that the easiest way to keepmy speed down was to stay in firstgear whilst in Moorhaven.

Give it a try – it really does work.
