Fridays might seem like a dayto kick back and relax. However,

Moorestown Township PublicSchools aren’t relaxing just yet. They take their first Friday of each month to do something goodwith a program called Food ForAll.

The program is a communityservice project of the MTPSwhere each school collects foodand donates it to three local foodpantries, which serve a large vari-ety of local citizens. The programis co-sponsored by theMoorestown Education Associa-

tion with the help of Live Civilly,MooreKids and the MoorestownHome and School Association.

“The whole point of the pro-gram is to bring the communitytogether and get the kids involvedin the whole process,” MaddieFarmer, Moorestown High School

junior and Food For All volunteer, said.

Food For All was started by afamily in Massachusetts andfound its way here throughSharon Kulik, a kindergartenteacher at Baker ElementarySchool. From there it grew andother organizations got involvedas well as the schools to make

Food For All Fridays. This Maywas the first full year of the pro-gram being in place at theschools.

Student volunteers like juniorsFarmer, Molly Rozelle andWilliam Stewart interviewed theheads of three local food pantriesto see how much they needed, what they needed and if theywould cooperate with the schools. The food pantries that were even-tually chosen were MoorestownMinisterium Food Panty of St.

Matthew Lutheran Church, theFirst Baptist Church of Moorestown’s Food Pantry andMoorestown’s Bethel AMEChurch’s Food Pantry.

The junior volunteers found thepantries often ran out of food cer-tain months and weren’t able toprovide for many of the individu-als and families who needed it,many of whom are Moorestownresidents. They needed more coop-eration from the community andan equal amount of donationsspread across the year.

    Writer: It’s virtually impossible

to turn New Jersey aroundYour editorial “New Jersey Needs a

‘New Deal’” was a pretty good example of why the supposedly great state of New Jer-sey will, and should, remain at the verybottom of the places to live and conductbusiness in the country.

First, let me say that I will be relocatingto Delaware after being a Moorestown resi-dent for more than 45 years. Property taxesare the sole reason I am leaving. I have hadto take Social Security early just to helppay these taxes, which I feel are nothing

more than flushing hard-earned moneydown a clogged toilet.

Then, I saw your editorial, which rein-forced my decision to finally get out of thisplace once and for all.

You say New Jersey needs a “new deal”

to turn things around because FDR used aNew Deal to get the country out of the

Great Depression. I’m sorry to disappointyou, but the New Deal didn’t do any suchthing.

On May 9, 1939, Henry Morganthau, aclose friend and secretary of the Treasuryto FDR as well as the key architect of theNew Deal, reported to the House Ways andMeans Committee the following words: "Iwant to see this country prosperous. I wantto see people get a job. I want to see peopleget enough to eat. We have never madegood on our promises." "I say after eightyears of this administration, we have justas much unemployment as when we start-

ed. ... And an enormous debt to boot.”That speech was given seven years after

the New Deal started. Average unemploy-ment for the whole year in 1939 would behigher than in 1931, before FDR came intooffice. The New Deal’s massive spending

on public works’ programs didn’t alleviatehigh unemployment nor did it produce a

recovery. That took World War II.And you propose that New Jersey initi-ate some similar programs to spend itself out of this economic malaise it’s in? Thereis a problem with your logic.

New Jersey is the most dysfunctionaland corrupt state in the union and de-serves to be in the position it’s in. It has be-come a place that benefits only two groupsof people. The first are those who work instate, county and municipal governmentservice and receive lucrative salaries, pen-sions and all those other incredible fringebenefits. The others are the families who

receive a free education for their childrenin the public/government school system. For the rest of us, and I’ll speak for myself,I’ve gotten nothing for the vast sums I’ve

     please see LETTER, page 12

    There aren’t too many times

    when you’ll read a pro-govern-

    ment-restriction opinion in

this space. As you can probably tell by

    our previous diatribes, we mostly

stand for free enterprise without re-

    strictions.

But today, we are in a nutty mood. We’re all for keeping government re-

strictions in place, at least at the gas

    pump.

Last week, state legislators put a

swift halt to a potential proposal to lift

    New Jersey’s gas-pumping restric-

tions and allow drivers to pump their

own gas at the station, and we like

what our elected officials have done in

    this case – for once.

New Jersey has banned self service

at gas stations for almost 70 years, and

we see no reason to change that now.

Sure, as many people have argued, having attendants pump our gas for us

is in New Jersey culture. It’s part of

who we are – spoiled people who don’t

have to brave the heat, the cold, the

rain, the wind or the snow to re-fill our

    gas-guzzling automobiles.

Sure, it’s nice to have a gas atten-

dant pump our gas and provide an

extra level of security when we need

to fill up on a not-so-crowded road at 4

in the morning when we’re avoiding

Shore traffic on a holiday weekend.

But the biggest reason we believe

New Jersey shouldn’t lift the restric-

tions on pumping gas is because it

would cost a lot of people a job.

There are thousands of people in

New Jersey who have a job pumping

gas. Even if it’s not a high-paying job,

it still provides necessary income for

those workers. Lift the ban, and thesepeople will instantly be out of a job.

    If allowing self-service gas pumping

    would significantly reduce prices at

the pump, then our stance might be

different. But estimates say the switch

would only save a few cents per gallon,

which means the real winners would

be the gas station owners – not the

    drivers.

So thumbs up to the recent decision

to not lift the government restriction.

It might be the last time you read

    those words in this space.

    in our opinion

Stay in your car!Put down the gas pump: Legislators say no to self-service at gas stations

    Your thoughts

paid to Moorestown and New Jer-sey over the years.

And I’m not the only one whofeels this way. I talk to so manypeople who have left, want toleave and are leaving the state.People are fleeing New Jerseyfaster than any other state.

I believe it is virtually impossi-ble to turn this state around so itwill ever be a reasonable place tolive and work in again. Those onthe receiving end of the outra-

geous taxes collected will notallow it to happen. You cannot fixthe problem unless there is struc-tural and fundamental reform at

all levels, a process that woulddrastically affect public sectoremployment and which, by itsvery nature, wants to remain un-changed and continue to slug

along perpetually in its moneygrubbing ways. Asinine politi-cians passing bills that rebate afew hundred dollars back tohomeowners does nothing morethan mask the problem.

I will thankfully be leaving thisdeplorable state shortly. Myproperty tax bill will reduce from$8,000 per year to $1,400 year, andthat $1,400 will cut in half afterthree years, as I’ll be over 65 yearsold. My new house is bigger, nicer

with lots more ground than myNew Jersey property and is sixmiles from the beach. From whatmy new neighbors tell me, the

schools down there educate theirchildren just as well as they do inNew Jersey. Children still go on tocollege and become successful. Somany of the people I’ve already

met down there are former NewJersey residents who have relo-cated.

So that’s it, Moorestown Sun.Go continue helping to perpetu-ate the problems and don’t rilethe feathers of any school admin-istrators, teachers, politicians, government unions, public schoolparents or anyone else who mightbe threatened by a change to thestatus quo.

I’ve wiped my hands of the

dreadful place at last. It won’t beable to suck anything more out of me.

“Ballots, Babies, and Bannersof Peace: American JewishWomen’s Activism from 1890-1940,” written by Klapper, won the

2013 National Jewish BookAward. It paints a vivid picture of

middle-class and working-classAmerican Jewish women whoconsistently and publicly en-gaged in all the major issues of

their day and worked closely withtheir non-Jewish counterparts onbehalf of activist causes includ-ing suffrage, birth control andpeace.

This book reveals how Ameri-can Jewish women, many unrec-ognized until now, used their reli-gion and cultural heritage to in-form and inspire their identity aswomen “struggling to become cit-izens and political actors in theUnited States.”

Klapper, professor of Ameri-can and women’s history at

Rowan University in Glassboro, will be discussing her newground-breaking book. Klapperearned her B.A. from Goucher

The Historical Society of Moorestown will mark the end of its 18-month commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil

War with a Civil War Reenact-ment.

A group of reenactors who por-tray the 4th New Jersey Regimentwill set up an encampment on thegrounds of the Smith-CadburyMansion, located at 12 HighStreet on Saturday, June 6 from 9a.m. to 3 p.m., in conjunction withMoorestown Day on Main Street.

Among the demonstrationsthat the group will showcase willbe the type of medical care sol-diers received in the mid-19th

century, the types of weaponsused, and even children's gamesfrom that era.

The 4th New Jersey Regimentwas formed in 2012 and has mem-bers from all over the state. Thegroup attends events all over thecountry and recently participatedin the 150th Anniversary Com-memoration of Lee's surrender at

Appomattox. Their goal is to edu-cate the public about one of themost pivotal time frames inAmerican history. As a reenact-ment organization, they educateby conducting living history pro-grams and by participating in

battle reenactments.A trip to Moorestown has a

heightened significance for thegroup because many of the menfrom Moorestown who fought inthe Civil War served in the 4thRegiment.

seem to be always lacking. Theyare very grateful for what theyget, but they always need help. Wetried to fulfill the necessities thatwere needed,” Rozelle said.

The schools collect what thepantries need the most, which isusually food items, though occa-sionally they’ll need items suchas paper towels or toilet paper.Food items collected usually are

non-perishables, such as cannedgoods or powdered mixes.

A few days before Food For AllFriday, MEA reusable blue bagsare placed in the mailboxes of teachers. An email from H&A willbe sent to parents as well, as a re-minder the collection day is com-ing up.

On Food for All Friday, stu-dents deposit their food items inbags that are displayed. Once thechildren have placed their items

in the bags, they are put in thehallways. Bags are then collectedby volunteers, which include par-

ents, students and teachers. The food is sometimes sorted

and bagged according to foodtypes; otherwise it is then deliv-ered to the local food pantries byparent volunteers.

“It’s not difficult. If everyonebrought in one can of food eachmonth from the schools, thatwould be a lot of donations and alot of help,” MHS teacher LisaTrapani said.

The MEA donated the reusablebags to collect the food items inthrough a grant. Teachers whoare MEA members volunteer in

each building to organize themonthly event.

“We had a lot of positive feed-back and a lot of people benefitfrom the program. They talk veryhighly of the Food For All pro-gram and relationships with theschools,” Farmer said.

According to Rozelle, in the thehigh school and middle school, the program isn’t receiving asmuch participation as they hadhoped, which they are working on

to change. However, they said theresponse in the lower schools isgreat, as they have all of the stu-

dents fully participate in the col-lection.

“The younger schools had stu-dents fully participate in the col-lection to make it more real. Theylet them know that people in thecommunity use this pantry andthat is important we all partici-pate. To grow up and spread thatidea a little more, knowing that itis important to help people, is agreat benefit of the program,”Rozelle said.

The food pantries were verygrateful for the donations theschools have provided.

Trapani hopes students whoparticipate in the program realizethe importance of giving back toyour own community and how alittle effort and organization cango a long way.

“I’d like them to get a sense of the importance of giving back toyour own community, that thereare people in Moorestown whoutilize the food bank, and it evenhelps others from surroundingcommunities. It also shows how

with little effort you can help a lotof people through organizing,”Trapani said.
