Moorestown’s Project Gradua-tion has been a huge event forMoorestown High School gradu-ates for about 27 years. What usedto be a fun, alcohol-free celebra-tion for seniors has recently be-come more than just a one-dayevent and has extended through-out the week, including socialmedia incorporation. However,Project Graduation can’t be donewithout the help of the communi-ty.

graduation.“Project Graduation has been a

big part of our community. It issuch a great memory, and contin-ues to be for me. We’re askingmembers of the community tostep in and make sure we contin-ue to provide that same magicalexperience each year ahead,” saidTrevor Durham, a MHS alumnusand a member of the ProjectGraduation Committee.

Project Graduation is a nation-wide initiative that began 36years ago in Oxford Hills, Maine,in response to seven alcohol- anddrug-related teen deaths that oc-curred during graduation cele-bration. Moorestown adoptedProject Graduation 27 years agoas an annual community-spon-sored event for MHS graduates.

The event shows teenage par-ties with alcohol-free and drug-free alternatives can still be a lotof fun. Project Graduation notonly protects MHS graduates dur-ing this particular event, but alsoserves as an example to thetown’s children that celebrationsdo not need to include drugs or al-cohol to be fun.

"I would want them to realizethat they can celebrate an event

and have an amazing and spectac-ular time without a drop of alco-hol or drugs," Robin Pendino, an-other Project Graduation com-mittee member, said.

“The desire is to have each oneof our graduates that we can pro-vide for them a safe and fun-filledweek-long event that culminatesto an all-night long celebration,”

The Lenola Volunteer FireCompany has been holding anEaster egg hunt for 75 years in itssection of Moorestown. TheMoorestown Business Associa-tion has been holding an Easteregg hunt on Main Street for 21

years. This year, the two organiza-tions are going to co-host a com-bined Easter egg hunt on Satur-day, April 4 at 9 a.m. sharp at Jeff Young Field, 101 North LenolaRoad, in the Lenola section of Moorestown. The event will beheld rain or shine.

"We wanted to be visible in theLenola section of Moorestown,"said MBA’s Don Powell, presidentof Powell Energy and Solar. "Sowe thought that it would be agood idea to combine our effortswith the Lenola Volunteer FireCompany to help them maketheir great event even better."

"We're very excited to have theMoorestown Business Associa-tion join with us to co-host thisannual event" said Sheila Diet-rich, chairperson of the Easteregg hunt for the Lenola VolunteerFire Company.

The hunt is planned for chil-dren between the ages of 0 to 12,with different sections of Jeff Young Field cordoned off for thefollowing age groups: 0 to 3, 4 to 6,7 to 9, and 10 to 12. All of the chil-dren will search for prizes inthousands of plastic eggs hiddenin their respective sections of Jeff Young Field. There will be freecrafts, provided by Perkins Cen-ter for the Arts, as well as visitsfrom the Easter Bunny and theEaster Chick.

“Our town welcomes springwith this annual event,” said JoeHorwitz, a volunteer who hasbeen running this event for theMBA for several years.

On March 13, arrested and

charged with shoplifting (co-de-fendants) were: a 32-year-old fe-male of Delran who concealed$1,121.48 worth of merchandisefrom Boscov’s Department Storeand a 38-year-old female of Del-

ran who concealed $272.50 worthof merchandise from Boscov’sDepartment Store. Both were re-leased on a summons.

On March 13, arrested andcharged with shoplift-ing was a 46-year-oldwoman of Moorestown. She con-cealed merchandisefrom Marshalls De-

partment Store valued at $195.44.She was released on a summons.

On March 15, due to a motor ve-hicle stop, a 29-year-old man of Edgewater Park was arrested andcharged with possession of mari-

juana under 50 grams. He was re-leased on a summons.

At last week’s Moorestown Councilmeeting, an ordinance introduction onabandoned properties and open space en-

croachment was tabled for the next meet-ing. Instead, a hot topic of the meeting wasonce again the condition of the water wellsthat were closed last year.

As of now, wells seven and nine are re-maining closed until a treatment is identi-fied. Also, the township has hired a new en-gineer and is thinking about hiring a scien-tist to evaluate the condition of all thetown’s drinking water, according to town-ship manager Scott Carew.

“We will open the wells when we have atreatment plan in place. We are workingclosely with the DEP. I assure you we are

taking every precaution that is not onlylegally, but responsibly required of us,”Mayor Victoria Napolitano said.

Adam Procopio, a scientist andMoorestown resident, came before councilto express his concerns with the two wells

closed because of Trichloropropane (TCP1,2,3) was found in the drinking water lastOctober. He wanted to know if the wellswould be turned on anytime soon andquestioned some of the other levels foundin the water that were publicly available on

the Department of Environmental Protec-tion’s website. He asked that the wells re-main inactive until a treatment is found.

Members of council assured him thewells are remaining closed as they decidewhat the appropriate treatment would be.Township Attorney Anthony Drollas madea point to mention that they’ve been work-ing on the wells and they closed them notbecause they were told to, but as a precau-tion.

“We’ve been working on this issue sincelast October. We are addressing any reme-diation issues associated with wells seven

and nine. We’ve went over and above withan abundance of caution to shut down thewells, not because we were ordered to doso, but because DEP suggested it. Wefelt it was the right thing to do,” Drollassaid.

Carew then spoke about the maximumcontaminate level of the wells. He said theDEP told him that nothing in those wellsexceeds the MCL and that there wouldtechnically be nothing legally wrong withturning the wells back on.

“I’ve been told by the DEP, and perhapsthey are wrong, that there is not a singleMCL that we exceed right now and thatthere is no legal impenitent from turningthose wells back on,” Carew said.

Carew also said a new engineer is work-ing on the wells right now along with theDEP to get the best recommendation onhow the wells would be treated. He men-tioned that the township is looking intohiring a scientist as well to review datafrom the wells and tell the township whathe or she feels is best, based on his or herexpert opinion.

Napolitano assured those present at themeeting that any new information on thewells would be told to the public as it came.

“As more details are available, they willbe delivered to the public,” Napolitanosaid.

that you’d be out of your mind to re-

tire in New Jersey, but it did rank the

Garden State near the bottom of the

list of desirable places to spend the lat-ter portion of your life.

This should not be a shock.

The survey ranks New Jersey 45th

on the list of best places to retire,

based on the fact that the cost of living

is high (45th), the community well

being is low (43rd) and the tax rate is

very high (49th). These factors out-

weight the low crime rate (eighth) andthe above-average weather and health-

care quality.

There’s a reason why so many New

Jerseyans retire elsewhere – it’s

cheaper. And cheaper is better, be-

cause most people would rather see

their hard-earned money go toward

vacations than taxes, for example.

Many retirees go to Florida not just for

the weather but for the absence of a

state income tax.

Maybe if New Jersey was more af-

fordable, more elderly residents would

stay at home, near their friends and

family. But since it’s not, many don’t.

We are probably not the only oneswho laughed when we pondered where

in New Jersey – other than, say, a

beach town such as Ocean City –

would be a “good” place to retire. And

that’s a shame, and a problem all at the

same time.

Our residents shouldn’t have to pre-

pare to leave when they retire.

Ransom Price was founded inDecember 2012 by Ransom, for-merly a member of the ‘90s punkband Point Blank, and by formerEndless Sacrifice drummer ChrisMazure. Ransom’s songwritingdraws heavy stylistic influencefrom bands such as Green Day,Screeching Weasel, The Bouncing

Souls and other similar acts. Ran-som Price plays punk rock that issimple, without pretense and ef-fective, he said.

Ransom played in bands forabout 15 years and has run Un-able Records for eight years; hefelt it was about time he startedgetting out his own music.

“I wasn’t making my ownmusic, and I wanted to changethat. So I formed Ransom Price. Itwas just an outlet for me to getback into making my own music.I had a lot of pent-up energy that Ineeded to get out,” Ransom said.

The name “My Kidnap Money”came about for a number of dif-ferent reasons. First, he wantedthe album title to go with theband’s name, named fittingly forRansom’s last name and hiswife’s maiden name, Price. Also,when he was younger, peoplewould always spell his last namewrong. His father would tell peo-

ple on the phone, “Ransom, youknow, like the kidnap money?” Sohe drew inspiration from that.

Other than choosing the name just to stick with the theme, Ran-som felt like a hostage to himself at the time he wrote these songs.

A few years ago, Ransom wentthrough a two-year period wherehe was struggling with depres-sion, work and family issues, andthe loss of some friends. He decid-ed to write down his feelings tohelp himself through the strug-gle.

“To be honest, it was a difficultalbum to write because of thesubject matter, being so personal.It was two years of really strug-gling and realizing my life has

changed. At the time, it was veryhard for me; that is why thealbum is very, very good. The bestI have ever written, and I think itis the fact that it is very personaland means so much to me,” Ran-som said.

It took a few years after thatstruggle for Ransom to take hiswriting and turn it into an album,but when he did, he was able to doit within two years and felt like aweight lifted off his shoulders.

“It was a relief when it was all

done. I can move on and appreci-ate it for the music and song itself rather than what I wentthrough,” Ransom said.

Although the “My KidnapMoney” album confronts somesignificant topics such as depres-

sion, stress, marriage and thepassing of friends, Ransom hopeslisteners create their own mean-ings out of the songs. He honestlywants people to relate to themusic in their own way and taketheir own perspective. However,he also would love for people to

just listen to the music and like it just for the fun.

“If you want to just bob yourhead to the music or gain somesort of perspective, I’ll be fine

with it either way,” Ransom said.Ransom Price is a studio proj-

ect for now. However, in additionto preparing for the release of “My Kidnap Money,” RansomPrice is also in pre-production ontwo separate music videos, bothscheduled to be released later thisspring. According to Ransom, itcould turn into more.

“We’ll see what happens,” Ran-som said.

Prior to “My Kidnap Money,”Ransom Price released two suc-cessful singles – one in January2013 (“West from El Paso”) andone in July 2014 (“Drink”). Theformer was the cornerstone of abenefit project that raised morethan $1,000 for the Lung CancerFoundation of America. Bothsingles, as well as the new album,were recorded at 0x1 Sound Stu-

dio in Cherry Hill, by award-win-ning engineer/producer JasonRuch.

Durham said.The week begins on Mondaywith a senior picnic; and then,throughout the week, seniors willcheck Twitter where Durhamwill tweet last-minute secret loca-tions and activities that studentscan go to or win prizes by going tothe secret location mentioned.

“It is something we didn’t havegoing on, but we obviously hadsuch a strong Twitter presence, wehad to do it. We do spur-of-the-mo-ment events. It allows for constant

contact and spur-of-the-momentactivities that really build up ex-citement for the week leading upto graduation,” Durham said.

On the day of their graduation,MHS graduates will leave directlyfrom the high school, immediate-ly following their graduation cer-emony, and board buses headed tosecret locations where they areentertained with games, food and

prizes while keeping the celebra-tion going all night long. The stu-dents, along with community andschool staff volunteers, return toMHS at 5 a.m. the following morn-

ing tired, but safe.Durham and Pendino saidtheir favorite part of the event isseeing all the seniors come to-gether. It doesn’t matter theirbackground or what they were in-volved in, the students reallycome together as a group toachieve goals to win prizes andhave fun while doing so.

“It is so heartwarming to seethese kids get along and have afun time. It doesn’t matter theirbackground or their GPA, they all

get along so great and it is justwonderful,” Pendino said.

ates each year. The donation por-tion is so important, from thetown and even from around thecountry, to celebrate our childrenand provide them a safe and funenvironment on their graduationnight. We are thankful for any in-volvement anyone desires to havein the night,” Durham said.

Also this year, Project Gradua-tion is selling new lawn-signs insupport of the graduating class.The sign says, “Congratulations!Moorestown High School Class of

2015.” Graduates and parents of graduates aren’t the only onesasked to purchase a lawn sign,but everyone is asked to buy oneto show their support of highschool students graduating andthe class of 2015. Lawn signs are$25 each, and forms can be foundonline.

“As a community, it is a niceway to honor our senior class.We’d like it to become a tradition.Even if you’ve already graduat-
