“We are at the lantern festival! Yay… It
was a bit boring waiting in line, but actually
the parade was really fun.” Maya
“The teacher placed the light in our
lanterns. My lantern was so bright,
and we carried our lanterns to the
festival. It was a really long walk but
amazing at the same time. I really
enjoyed the festival.” Jessica
Making the Lanterns
“We made it with cane and
after that we covered it
with paper, and it was a
gluey situation. I didn’t like
that part, but moving on, it
took a few days to dry the
paper.” Anton
The Ozasia Festival
“M4 went to a dance workshop. It was
great cause. We got to learn an
Indonesian dance, and I said thank you in
Indonesian. It was fun.” Lucas
Making the lanterns
“First we made the
skeleton of the lantern
out of cane, special tape
and a paper plate. I
made mine into a
pyramid with a triangle
base.” Mihaela

THE BIG SIX OF READING
Fluency
Fluency is not the ability to just read quickly! Fluent reading is the ability to make reading sound like spoken language: it is reading with appropriate phrasing, expression and pace. Fluent readers understand and make meaning of the text as they read. Core components include accuracy, pace and expression, and volume. There is a strong correlation between fluency and comprehension.
Even highly competent readers will not be fluent when the text contains many unfamiliar or technical words that are new to the reader. Fluency demands that the text be at the reader’s independent reading level. This is why beginning and struggling readers need simple texts at their independent level to build speed and confidence. When children are sent home with books that they can ‘already read’, they have opportunities to develop appropriate expression, to practise chunking and pausing, and, most importantly, to build their confidence. On the other hand, reading quickly without attending to punctuation, expression and comprehension is not fluency: reading rates should not be at the expense of comprehension.
Ideas to improve reading fluency
Model Fluent Reading
The one thing that we often overlook is a child’s ability to learn from others. One of the best ways to improve a child’s reading fluency is to model it for them. Let the child see and hear what fluent reading should sound like. Make sure you include plenty of expression and emotion while reading and model proper phrasing and pacing.
Stop Watch Reading
Set a stop watch for one minute and have your child read a small passage with as few errors as possible. Discuss unknown words. Re-set the timer and ask them to read it again. The second time should be faster and with more fluency.
Choral Read Aloud
‘Choral reading’ is when an adult reads aloud and asks the student to follow at the same pace. Choral reading is another way to show your child what fluent reading should sound like.
Re-read Favourite Books
Re-reading a favourite book gives children the confidence, accuracy, and speed needed to read fluently without focusing on just decoding and instead more on comprehending and mimicking expression.
