Case at hand:

It is about a small designer shop run by Ms Sandra who is clothing designer and manufacturer in the company. It has 12 employees out which 10 are machinist and rest two are cutter and supervisor.

For last 6 months company is facing problem with the quality of the garments produced by the machinists leading to stock returns and client dissatisfaction. Supervisor’s main task is to maintain the quality of garments but most of his time goes in caring for the expensive equipment and preventing careless wastage of materials

Several machinists have expressed that few of them are not working efficiently and garment incentive bonus paid to them is quite low and hence were low in morale.

Analysis:

It is clearly visible that supervisor is more involved in product management than human management. There is nothing been said that can point out if company is paying any attention towards its employees. Company is working on the merit to minimize its material cost but ignoring the Employee participation. Quality of the garments has suffered because machinists are not working well.

Proposed Solution:

Company should reanalyze its incentive pay system to tie the rewards to performance so that machinists have reason to work efficiently.

Company should sharply differentiate the good performers from avg. and poor performers.

Responsibility of the supervisor has to be made more accounting to the Employees rather than pure focus on Cost minimization.

From case it seems that all 10 machinists are not working in tandem so there is need of forming mutual reliance, team spirit and friendship among coworkers.

Of the 10 machinists any one could be promoted to lets say senior designation among them to not only to take care of his work but to

make sure his team is working efficiently and set example for other workers.
