Eric Hunziker's new trio DogOn routinely navigates through the spheres of jazz, funk and «Open Space» and impressivelysteers their spaceship through delicately improvised meteorite showers and mysterious mists of sound. Take off is withfunky atmospheric sounds, landing by earthy dub. When working with Hunziker's compositions, the band integratedspontaneously created grooves and impressions – until the repertoire was ready to be pressed for their debut album«Rotten Rainbow Rollercoaster». The Zurich Kantonalbank encourages young, innovative Swiss bands with the ZKB Jazz Prize. The 15th edition of theZKB Jazz Prize is a public six-day festival from 30th April to 5th May 2017 staged in Moods. For the finale on 5th May,the two jurors Elina Duni and Erik Truffaz will appear on stage with their musical collague Bugge Wesseltoft.

In 2015 Raphael Loher and Urs Müller from Luzern and Nicolas Stocker from Zurich created the trio, Kali. Founded as aWorking Band, they develop their own blend of contemporary classical, alternative rock and improvised music – as ifRage Against the Machine and Morton Feldman had a daughter. From wonderful minimalistic intermezzos toastonishingly catchy, dense and powerful compositions, they derive a broad, dynamic and stylistic range without everlosing their own sound.

Abozekry learnt to play the Oud from anearly age with the famous Naseer Shamma in his «House of the Arabian Lute» in Cairo. At 15, he was already theyoungest teacher of the instrument in the Arabic world. «Karkadé» is the name of his newest project.

Schwalbe & Elefant set Swiss-German lyrics within the contex of freely improvised music and slick song forms. In thesonic undergrowth of their duo-improvisations we find spoken text passages in unison with harp-playing, lively sungmelodies, together with confused and stumbling syllables. Withher positive radiance and musical abilities, in particular her Scat singing, she quickly acquired a large audience. Wecelebrate Ella's 100the birthday with a traditional program and a songstress who embodies Ella's music and fortunatelyhas found a new home in Switzerland: Welcome, Brandy Butler! Brandy grew up in Reading, Pennsylvania (USA) and in1997 moved to Philadelphia, where she studied music. She was highly interested in Jazz, which during her studies sheinitially considered to be «Instrumental music in a mens' domain». As a child, Don Ellis heard the march «76 Trombones» by a brass band and was so impressed by the sound of thetrombone that he wrote it on his Christmas wish list. However, under the Christmas tree there lay a trumpet - the smallDon had written the wrong name on the note. Nevertheless, he soon found that he liked his new, shiny instrument. Later,the workaholic experimented with elements of new music, uneven rhythms and unusual line-ups - and then several yearsafter the Christmas surprise in fact began to play the trombone. Together with the «jack of all trades» trumpeter fromVienna, Thomas Gansch, came the idea for the program for this concert: the titles to be played should be like «JesusChrist Superstar», «Hey Jude» and «French Connection», for which film score written in 1972, Don Ellis later won aGrammy in the category «Best Instrumental Arrangement».

As an ensemble, it is difficult to trump a big band in terms of variety. Steffen Schorn has managed to compose arepertoire which shows the band in all its aspects, that provides space for each timbre and a basis for every rhythm. Onone side of the spectrum there is the very short piece «Wildbotz», a racy number that is not even a minute long. On theother side there is the almost half-hour-long suite title track, «Three Pictures», which oscillates between lightness andgripping beats, and beguiles you, only to brusquely wake you up again. Inbetween, «Africa» sounds almost meditativeand in your thoughts gets you photographing summer sunsets. In contrast, «Why Did You Go» comes over like a tender,warm wind that carries you away. With its generous melodies, «Eye Of The Wind», offers ten minutes of space tobreathe, invites you to dream. Everything is played with wit and bravado. «Three Pictures» demonstrates the incrediblejourney that the 18 musicians have undertaken in their three years of collaboration with Steffen Schorn. «We havefantasy, we are prepared to take risks» is how Schorn summarises what makes the ZJO so unique. And one should add:a dozen-and-a-half of really superb musicians.

The singer and guitarist Omara «Bombino» Moctaris a charismatic personality; as a member of a Tuareg tribe in the Central African Niger he fosters a deep awareness forthe music of the Nomads. During the last ten years Bombino has developed into an internationally known and admiredmusician with a sizeable list of fans and musical collaborators. This includes Stevie Wonder, Keith Richards, RobertPlant, Dave Longstreth, Dan Auerbach and many more. Pat Metheny was made aware of Antonio and meanwhile in his bands made the four-times Grammy winner Sánchez – thanks to his outstanding technique - into the vanguard of a new, breathtakingpolyphonic and polyrhythmic drumming style. This evening features the first two works from the collaboration of Miles Davis and Gil Evans. Following last year'sperformance of «Porgy & Bess», Matthieu Michel on trumpet is also involved once again. The tracks, recorded in 1949and 1950, and later issued as the «Birth of the Cool» album, are considered to be ground-breaking works between Bebopand Cool Jazz. As a soloist one also hears trumpeters from the band. Almost ten years later, in addition to his manyquintet recordings, a new format was sought for Miles Davis, who had in the interim become very popular.

Miles contracted Gil Evans, who combined classic Band instruments like the tuba, French horn and bass clarinet. Theresults were great arrangements of tracks such as «My Ship», «The Duke» and «Meaning of the Blues». Matthieu Michel,who grew up in musician family in Freiburg, is the perfect choice for Miles' part. The trumpeter is seen as an exceptionalimprovisational talent with his own language and outstanding technique. His international reputation has taken him ontour througout more than 40 countries.

Following the successful last season's joint ZJO/Brandy Butler concert, the songstress has been invited for a secondproject.

Billy Strayhorn was 24 years old when he joined Duke Ellington and remained loyal for the entire duration of his shortlife. He was to a large part also responsible for the sound of the orchestra and was considered as one of the mostprominent jazz composers and arrangers. The adjective «meaningful» without doubt also applies to his song texts, themajority of which he penned himself. In contrast to many not-so-deep jazz standard lyrics, Strayhorn's texts areintelligent, witty and often unconventional. So, for example, the track «Take the A-Train» is route information toEllington's house wrapped up in a melody, which Duke explained to Strayhorn by telephone for their first encounter: «Youmust take the ‹A› train, to go to Sugar Hill way up in Harlem».

Brandy Butler describes Strayhorn as one of her favourite composers and writers and during the evening will sing trackslike «Passion Flower» and «Satin Doll» in addition to «Take the A-Train». She grew up in America, studied music inPhiladelphia Musik and in 2003 came to Switzerland as an au-pair. Soon she was singing with the greats such as SophieHunger, Florian Ast and the rapper Steff la Cheffe. She can also evidence a notable solo career with bands such as«Chamber Soul» or her current project «Brandy Butler and the Brokenhearted».

For thisventure he has joined forces with Otis Sandsjö, the individual and inimitable saxophonist of the young European jazzscene, and the drummer Moritz Baumgärtner, who acts not only as the rhythmical backbone but also as a further sound-sculpting instrumentalist. In the process the band functions as a collective, in which each of the three exceptionalmusicians can steer the concert toward unexpected paths. Now the two Cubans present their first duo album, «Duologue» (2019). Singer and percussionistMartinez, whose music school was the street, is a master of Afro-Cuban folk music and the Batá drum, which he ablydemonstrated in collaboration with Sting, Paul Simon and Wynton Marsalis, amongst others. In contrast to Martinez,Rodríguez studied at the Havana Music School, where his work was influenced by Bach, Strawinsky and Cuban Jazz. Heis one of the most impressive exponents of New Cuban Jazz, totally following in the tracks of pioneers such as GonzaloRubalcaba, and is the Artistic Director of the Global Gumbo Project, which was founded by Quincy Jones.
