  • Temporary and DisabilityAssistance Statistics

    MAY 2015

    Temporary Assistance

Temporary Assistance recipients totaled 573,167 in May 2015, decreasing by 2,341 (-0.4%) from the previous month. Related expenditures totaled $187,259,264 in May 2015, decreasing by approximately $3.7 million (-1.9%) over April 2015.

    Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients totaled 3,027,230 in May 2015, decreasing by 12,021 (-0.4%) from the previous month. Related expenditures totaled $417,403,309 in May 2015, decreasing by approximately $3.8 million (-0.9%) over April 2015.

    Supplemental Security Income

Supplemental Security Income recipients (including Mental Hygiene) totaled 707,929 in May 2015, decreasing by 2,745 (-0.4%) from the previous month. Related expenditures totaled $418,768,894 in May 2015, increasing by $160,957 (+0.04%) over April 2015.

Note: New York State’s October 2014 administrative takeover of the State Supplement portion of the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefit precipitated systems changes that disrupted the pre-existing statistical reporting processes for the SSI program overall. This has resulted in overcounting program participants and possibly expenditures on the monthly reports from October 2014 to the present. The New York State Office of Information Technology Services is working on tracing and correcting the cause of this problem, but, until these adjustments are made, the SSI statistics contained in this report are included to fulfill statutory reporting requirements only and should not be used for trending or other purposes.

Note: Data pursuant to a New York State Legislative mandate S. 6057-B/A. 9557-B, Chapter 57, L. 2004. Based on local district claims submitted on claims Schedules A and C. Includes reimbursable expenditures for basic assistance, rent supplements, family shelters, domestic violence shelters, security deposits, transitional services, diversion transportation, diversion payments, and other non-assistance. These claims are net of cancellations and refunds, and include any reconciliations and supplemental claims applied to the month after initial expenditure reporting is done. Thus, these data differ from the expenditure data presented elsewhere in this document, which are derived from original payment issuance activity during the month, net of cancellations and refunds in that month. District claiming activity for recent months is generally not complete before the statutorily required due date for this report. Thus, claims for recent months may appear substantially below those for earlier months. Claims tables in future months of this report will continue to include the historical periods above, adjusted for claiming activity occurring subsequent to this report.
