Welcome readers to the fourth issue of e-Chronicles of Hashoo Foundation (HF). This issue highlights the variety of activities and events conducted during the month of March. Indeed, March was a busy month for the HF Team and our activities generated significant media attention! This e-newsletter is an outcome of the collaborative efforts of various departments in HF. We request each department to share their key activities and highlights of the month, subsequently, the editorial team conducts the peer review process to determine the e-Chronicle's content. HF celebrated a successful decade of assisting deserving students with its scholarship programme. The event was graced by senior dignitaries such as the Patron-in-Chief HF, Mr Sadruddin Hashwani, Chairperson, Ms Sarah Hashwani, Executives of the Hashoo Group and Members of the HF Board of Trustees. There was profound excitement and pride, as the successful alumni shared their inspirational experiences. The audience were entertained with cultural dances and theatrical performances by HF's young beneficiaries. The event also recognized the challenges and achievements of HF's alumni during their educational voyage. Mr Sadruddin Hashwani presented awards to the high achievers of the scholarship programme. He acknowledged the visionary leadership of Chairperson HF, Ms Sarah Hashwani and expressed gratitude towards all the partners and individuals for their continued assistance and support to the Foundation. Mr Hashwani further encouraged all the capable individuals to contribute their resources in order to eliminate poverty. Ms Sarah Hashwani expressed that it was an emotional occasion for her as she had interacted with the alumni and knew how far each alumnus had come in their journey. She advised the management of HF to develop a strong alumni network that would track the achievements of each alumnus and provide them with a platform to act as mentors in the programme. The Hashoo Foundation's Scholarship Program began in 2004. It is open to all students who meet the entry requirements and thus the highest achieving students are designated as National Merit Scholars. Hashoo Foundation in collaboration with Hashoo Group, celebrated International Women's Day on Friday, March 28, 2014. “Inspiring Change” was the theme of the event. The day highlighted the important role and contribution of women in the economic and social development of Pakistan. The celebration acknowledged the achievements and contribution of female employees within both organizations. The event was graced by Chairperson HF, Ms Sarah Hashwani, Chief Adviser Hashoo Group, Dr Salim Mehmud and dignitaries such as, CEO Focus Pakistan, Ms Nusrat Nasab and Senior Journalist Dawn News, Ms Asma Shirazi, who delivered inspirational speeches. Ms Sarah Hashwani emphasized that one must empower women in order to bring about positive change within society. She also advised both organizations to accelerate the participation of its female employees and to encourage advocacy for women's advancement in all tiers. The guests were enthralled by the unique cultural performances of HF beneficiaries. Chairperson HF, Ms Sarah Hashwani addressing the audience at the Women's Day event, 2014, Marriott Hotel, Islamabad Women's Day Celebrated to Inspire Change A Shift From Poverty to Prosperity ICT Lab Established In Gilgit, Baltistan HF has initiated a three month Information and Communications Technology (ICT) training under its Early Childhood Development programme in collaboration with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in Gilgit, Baltistan. The course focuses on providing customized computer skills based on individual and market needs. It aims to provide students with easy access to computer resources and encourages them to integrate computers into their daily lives. The ICT lab was established on March 03, 2014, which is equipped with a network of over 30 computers, multimedia and a sound system to conduct interactive teaching sessions. HF designed a comprehensive course to meet the technology needs of today with the latest software packages. The course architects hired a competent trainer, a graduate of COMSATS University, to guide trainees. HF's ICT training has the following benefits: Customized training to meet individual needs Interactive theoretical and practical training Experienced trainers with real-world experience Small classes for individual attention Certificate of completion provided with every course Within two weeks, the vast majority students noted a significant improvement in their computer skills. People born in April are natural leaders because they are brave and adventurous. They get easily bored and prefer action oriented activities. In addition, they demonstrate swift decision making but may regret their hasty decisions at times. April born individuals are close to their families and take responsibility for their family selflessly. They are loving and generous people, who are good listeners and console others. Hashoo Foundation Continues Relief Operations in Thar, Sindh A competent MHU health doctor attending a patient during HF's free medical checkup Focus Group Discussions with the community representatives in process HF food distribution amongst the drought affectees of Tharparkar Hashoo Foundation's (HF) relief activities for the drought affectees of Thar continue at a steady pace. HF's humanitarian team first carried out RAPID assessment in order to identify the community needs. The HF team distributed the food ration cards and packages among 500 drought affected community members. Furthermore, the HF team has established a conveniently located warehouse for food storage and to provide easy access to the drought affected areas. A Mobile Health Unit (MHU) has been successfully deployed in Islamkot, Mitthi and Diplo. HF's MHU has specialist health staff to meet the medical needs of the community The aforementioned interventions made by HF have been widely appreciated and acknowledged by the local communities of Tharparkar, Sindh. Health Dropbox Employees often complain of eye strain, body-ache and stiffness in their backs due to frequent use of computers. Medical research has proven that prolonged use of computers, inappropriate positioning of individuals, poor lighting and tight deadlines are the leading contributors in causing physical discomfort and stress at work. The following tips may help to prevent the above problems: 1. Reduce computer glare by using an anti-glare filter over the computer screen 2. Clean the screens frequently 3. Blink frequently to prevent dry eyes 4. Use a high chair with a back support to reduce potential backache 5. Adjust your posture frequently 6. A simple walk to another colleague's desk can stimulate blood circulation and a light hearted chat can reduce mental strain 7. The following stretch exercises can be implemented at your desk: Rotate your head in a clockwise motion, followed by an anti-clockwise motion Roll your shoulders forwards and then backwards Stretch and bend your upper body forward and then backward a. b. c. Muhammad Zafar, a 30 year old dairy farmer, lives in Layyah in Southern Punjab. Cattle is a major source of food and income for his family. Zafar had very little income and his financial situation deteriorated further as his family size increased to eight children. Before acquiring the training from HF, Zafar did not know of basic animal husbandry techniques. However, he was pleased to learn about the free training that HF was offering in his area. Zafar learnt the necessary skills regarding animal hygiene and vaccination. Presently, Zafar is obtaining 32 liters of milk per day, in contrast to the 14 liters that he used to obtain before learning husbandry skills. Hashoo Foundation Hosts its First Alumni Get TogetherHashoo Foundation commemorated the accomplishments

of its alumni on Sunday, March 31, 2014. HF celebrated a

successful decade of assisting deserving students with its

scholarship programme. The event was graced by senior

dignitaries such as the Patron-in-Chief HF, Mr Sadruddin

Hashwani, Chairperson, Ms Sarah Hashwani, Executives of

the Hashoo Group and Members of the HF Board of

Trustees.

There was profound excitement and pride, as the successful

alumni shared their inspirational experiences. The audience

were entertained with cultural dances and theatrical

performances by HF's young beneficiaries. The event also

recognized the challenges and achievements of HF's alumni

Mr Sadruddin Hashwani presented awards to the high
