The German-Americans woke on Sunday June 30th in Philadelphia to a sky overcast with clouds and rain storms. Thunder may have rumbled and lightning cracked while a blitz of weary hearts sighed;

It is German Day today. Ever the proud and determined people we rolled out of bed and prepared for our day. Across

Eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Delaware they pulled up their socks, laced up their dirndls, slapped on their lederhosen and buttoned their vests all for one purpose and a valiant one at that!

IT WAS GERMAN DAY in Philadelphia!

PHILADELPHIA GERMAN DAY A SUCCESS… IN SPITE OF RAIN!

The German Hungarians were proud to host German Day this year and were happy to see a number of our friends in attendance! Support for German Day and the Steuben Parade is essential from all the associated clubs and we cannot take that lightly! Although the rain trickled down and the sun stretched to shine through the clouds, on German Day in Philadelphia the cold Warsteiner still flowed from the taps, and the schnitzel, the wurst and the leberkase still came hot from the kitchen! Polka beats hummed from the speakers prior to our vari-ous main entertainment that would go on! Despite the weather the G.H. Under 23 men were able to finish off a win with room to spare around 1pm in the Stadium! We were happy to have an exhibition of the sport of Fistball from the Phoenix Sport Club, a great German-American club that should not be modest about their mastery of the game! Moving the main events of the day inside German Hungarian Hall turned out to be an asset to our celebrations. The guests in attendance filled the room and the bar! Lively Music from the Heimatklänge Orchestra led many to the dance floor throughout the day. The Philadelphia & Trenton Donauschwaben Dance Groups opened the day’s performances and they did a wonderful job! The planners made sure that every break in the HK set meant a dancing display from one of the many groups in attendance! Our small yet spirited Children’s Cultural Group put on a show with their smiles in full! The G.T.V. Almrausch Schuhplattlers performed a noteworthy set of dances with their distinct flair of the Philadelphia style! As usual the G.H. Schuhplattler Group, danced three dances for the pleasure of the attendance as well as themselves! Important to note that a slightly smaller group performed the “Pustertaler Alpen-Landler” the dance that a group of 16 couples just performed at the 24. Gaufest. To close out German Day’s entertainment, the last per-formance was a group effort. Anyone who was able bodied was invited to dance the “Gauplattler” in friendship and German-American celebration! Representatives of Almrausch Phila., Auerhahn Oley, Gemütlichen NY, & the German Hungarians Oakford participated and they had a grand time dancing together.

The Philadelphia Maßkrugstemmen yielded once again a winner from the German-American Police Association. President and General Chairman of the Steuben Day Observance Association, Thomas Markow greeted and addressed the attendance. He thanked all the members of the association for their hard work in preparing for German Day and the upcoming parade. He stressed the need for support from our community of clubs and organizations. Mr. Markow introduced President Galgon who thanked everyone for coming as well as all our members for their preparations and work to make German Day happen. The 2013-2014 Kornblumenhof of Philadelphia was introduced and crowned before the crowd. Miss Cannstatter, Mikayla Appell was crowned 2. Kornblumen Prinzessin. Miss German-American Police, Jessica Hagmaier was crowned 1. Kornblumen Prinzessin. Miss Lancaster Liederkranz, Katie Coons was crowned Kornblumen Königin and Miss German-America of Philadelphia. Congratulations on their crowning! It was a grand old GERMAN DAY! It was a great celebration of our German-American culture in Phila-delphia! Thanks to all the clubs in the association who attended and made the event happen! Look forward to the 43rd Parade on Saturday September 28th in the Mayfair section of Philadelphia as well as the future of German-American Visibility in Philadelphia and the United States!

(GAUFEST CONTINUED) The Bid Our Executive Board had decided to place this bid and had informed all officers, chairman and dancers of this decision at our warm-up on June 16. We were told that we would announce this decision at the Gaufest after the group competition. Further info will be provided on this as we proceed. The Bauernmesse A large majority of the attendees from all clubs and their flags attend this important mass where all the banners which the host club pre-sents to all attending clubs are blessed by the priest. Father Ron Kreidler performed this task and also said the mass in the German language. The homily was spoken in English and was relevant not only for this particular Sunday but also for the event. The Festessen (Banquet) The banquet took place from 6 PM to Midnight with a delicious din-ner and music by Die Lustige Almdudler. All enjoyed themselves with friends and family. At this time the Einzel Competition Winners were announced. The Einzel Competition Winners It all happened so quickly! “We are now going to announce the Adult Einzel Competition Winners. – Ages 16 to 34- 3rd Place – Werner Fricker III and Allysa Reiter from the United German Hungar-ians, Oakford, PA.” The name Werner Fricker was barely out of the announcer’s mouth and our group of 61 strong along with many of our friends began cheering in loud voices. Werner and Allysa proceeded to the stage along with 2nd place win-ner Adam Hetzel and Christine Olk and 1st place winners Kyle Ott and Regina Rock. These four are from the host club STV Bavaria, Cleve-land. Needless to say, we were all very proud that Werner and Al-lysa had placed 3rd out of 66 couples. Later we were to find out that the majority of our group placed in the top 1/3. First Place in age group 35 to 49 was Juergen Friese and Heidi Friese First Place age group 50 to 59 was John Schwab and Karin Schwab from Almrausch, Phila. PA First Place age group 60 plus was Roger Mowery and Carolyn Marquardt. In each age group first prizes won gold medals, second won silver medals and third won bronze medals which they will all wear proud-ly henceforth. Youth Einzel Competition Winners As previously stated the youth although dancing as a couple are judged or critiqued as an individual. They do not win medals howev-er they are acknowledged and receive a pin. We were again very pleased that Steve Paul won 3rd place in the 13 to 15 ages group and Emma Walter also won 3rd place in that age group. First and Second Places for girls ages 13 to 15 were won by Kristen and Stephanie Schwab of the Philadelphia Almrausch while Gene Zaiser also of the Almrausch won 2nd Place. Our two younger couples age groups were not announced. We continued to enjoy Die Lustige Almdudler and later once again Alex Meixner courtesy of Denver who are bidding for the 27.Gaufest in 2019. The BS Room The BS Room(s) are rented by the German Hungarian attendees sep-arately from each family’s sleeping quarters for us to get together to “eat, drink and be merry”. Almost from the beginning (1989), we have successfully enjoyed these rooms with our own group and with many friends. Whenever we are not busy with the Gaufest sched-

ule, this is where we congregate. So after the Banquet and Al Meixner’s music, many headed to our BS Room. Although I, being one of our 4 “Super Seniors” who attended, was in bed by 2 AM, I heard that many had a really good time with some comments by the hotel staff. Since the picnic didn’t start until 11 AM and our Schuhplattler Group was scheduled to perform our “Ehrentanz” in the 12 Noon grouping, it really didn’t matter that some only slept 5 hours. Oh, well! To be young again. The Picnic An Ehrentanz is performed by most groups who attend this festival. This is a dance performed by all your dancers and shows your tal-ents. Approximately 40 groups performed throughout the four days. It is interesting to note that seven groups performed from the state of Pennsylvania with New York following with five groups. There were also groups from 12 other states; groups from 3 Canadian provinces and groups from 3 German Gauverbands. Performing the PUSTERTALER ALPEN LÄNDLER, our dancers were:

Alex Blank and Michelle Galgon Dan Galgon and Miklaela Malofiy

Sasha Malofiy, Jr. and Nichole Deely Werner Fricker III and Allysa Reiter

Michael Fricker and Lisa Fricker Karl Fetzer and Anna Martini

Nick Walter and Jenn Lineman Joey Reiter and Michelle Paul Brian Noel and Kristen Reiter

Sasha Malofiy and Janet Malofiy Ben Meck and Susi Hartmann

Josh Meck and Marlene Fricker Mike Cramer and Karen Mahadevan

Bob Walter and Emma Walter Stevie Paul and Karina Fricker John Reiter and Connie Reiter

Group Awards Later the Group Prize Plattling Winners were announced beginning with those placing 5th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd, and 1st. Only the first three re-ceive medals. Since we did not place in the top five, and we knew we had performed well, we were curious to find out our placement. We were happily surprised that we had placed sixth. Our group was the youngest we have ever entered in this competition. Out of the eight, four had never competed in the group competition before.

1st Place— STV Bavaria Cleveland, Ohio 2nd Place— SG Edelweiss St. Paul, Minnesota 3rd Place— Gemütlichen Enzianer, NY 4th Place— TEV Edelweiss, Denver, Colorado 5th Place— Bayern Verein Newark, New Jersey 6th Place— UNITED GERMAN HUNGARIANS, OAFORD, PA 7th Place— Holzhacker Buam Toledo, Ohio 8th Place— SVEV D’Oberlandler, Milwaukee, Wisconsin 9th Place— GTV Almrausch Philadelphia, PA 10th Place— SVV “Original Enzianer” New York 11th Place— BHTV “Golden Gate” San Francisco, California 12th Place— Almrausch Schuhplattler Altoona 13th Place— Enzian Schuhplattler Seattle 14th Place— SGV Edelweiss Buffalo

In Memoriam

HELEN MENHARDT Helen Menhardt of Richboro died on Thursday, July 4, 2013 at Abington Hospice in Warminster surrounded by her loving family. She was 82 and was the beloved wife of 56 years to the late Julius Menhardt Jr. She is survived by her children, Heidi and Bill Ryder, Kurt and Linda Menhardt, Werner Menhardt and Lisa Fenton, and her 10 grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Friedel Grohmann of Marbach am Neckar in Germany. Helen was born in Kaisersdorf, Galicia, now known as Poland to the late Jacob and Ludwiga Koestel and was the sister of the late Leopold Koestel. In 1939, the German Commission relocated her family to Germany and eventually they were placed in a camp in Schrimm, near Posen in the Warthegau. In Warthegau, Helen attended elementary and middle school until they fled to Chemnitz in Saxony. In 1946, she moved to Marbach am Neckar, Wurttemberg and attend-ed the Women’s Work School (Frauen Arbeitss-chule) in Ludwigsburg and she worked part time, including working for a farmer, in order to obtain ration cards. Helen had also worked in Stuttgart as a seamstress until her emigration to America in 1953. Since her husband, Jules, was a staunch mem-ber of the United German Hungarians, Helen

and her children also became active there. Their children as well as some of their grand-children were active in the Cultural and Soccer Programs. Helen who was known for her love of entertaining and baking, pitched in whenev-er needed by the club in both these areas, teaching the younger generation by her exam-ple. It was Helen, who after the fire in 1973, helped redecorate the club after it was rebuilt. She also helped in the decorating area through-out the years. Both Helen and Jules enjoyed attending our entertainment events especially those when our dancers performed. Helen continued to attend these affairs after Jules death. I believe she was last at our club at the Schnitzel Night in May. Both her viewing and services took place at Joseph A. Fleuhr III Funeral Home in Richboro on Wednesday, July 10th. The interment was at Forest Hills Cemetery in Philadelphia. A lunch-eon followed at our club. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, or the Abington Hospice at Warminster, or the United German Hungarians. Helen was a great wife, a great mother and grandmother and a great friend. She will be missed by the many who knew and loved her. Farewell, dear friend, until we meet again!

Obituary We sadly report the death of Victor Hoffmann approximately one month after the death of his wife, Elsie. Victor, age 75, died on June 13th and is survived by his four children, grandchildren and one great grandchild. He is also survived by his brother, Leonard Hoffmann. Both Victor and Elsie were members of the Philadelphia Donauschwaben where Victor held many official posi-tions. He was well known not only in the Philadelphia area German American Community but also in the Soccer Community. As young men, both Victor and his brother Lenny played for the German Hungarian soccer teams. Victor could be seen at every important soccer game where ever it was played. Our deepest sympathy to Victor’s family and the Philadelphia Donauschwaben Club.
