Monthly Newsletter March 2018 Issue 8 Greetings Greyhound Nation, The first round of the Florida Standards Assessments is upon us, as we commence with the FSA ELA Writing component. Testing has begun and will go through March 9 for grades 6 through 10. Our students are well-prepared for this portion of the ELA assessment and will put forth their very best. Spring break is from March 12 through March 16. As teachers and students return from a well-deserved break, I would like remind everyone the key to our students’ success is to remain focused. Therefore, I ask that you ensure your child comes to school regularly and arrives on time. The more students are in school, the higher their achievement. I would like to recognize Ms. Caroline Duran, Art Teacher for garnering “Second Place” in the high school division for the 2018 St. Lucie County Fair School Display Program sponsored by the Fort Pierce Sunrise Kiwanis. This is her third consecutive year garnering an award for this event. Congratulations and great job! There are many other exciting happenings taking place this month, such as Spring sports and Performing Arts activities. Baseball, softball, tennis and track and field are in full swing. I invite you all to come out and support our “Greyhounds” as they demonstrate their athletic talents. Both the players and coaches would appreciate the support. For the 10th consecutive year, the drama department’s Thespian Troupe #6958 will be traveling to Tampa to participate in state-level competition at the State Thespian Festival March 14-17. We wish them all the very best of luck. As a reminder, students should not be dropped off in the morning prior to 6:45 AM, as we do not have adequate supervision on the campus until that time. This is a safety/supervision concern and would appreciate everyone’s adherence to this request. Thank you for the continued support of our teachers, staff and students. It is greatly appreciated! “One School; One Team; One Theme” Sincerely, Henry Sanabria Principal Treasure Hunter

March brings great excitement for IB students as they continue to narrow down the IB major assignments. Seniors are celebrating the submission of the World Literature papers, the Language B Written Assignment, the TOK Essay and the Extended Essay. With Spring Break right around the corner, it is important that students continue to maintain positive study habits, stay focused, and remember to turn in all assignments on time.

Important assignments this month for seniors include the CAS Reflective Essay and summary sheet due on 3/8, Spanish Orals from 3/20-3/26, Biology IA 3/21, Theatre Director’s Notebook 3/21, Theatre Presentation 3/28, and French Orals 3/29. Assignments for juniors include; Chemistry II lab notebook due on 3/7, Music Investigation 3/22, Music III IA 3/22. These assignments will be submitted to the IB for grading and the points earned are applied towards the final IB grade in each subject area. We appreciate the time and effort that is invested in these assignments by the students and the teachers.

We are also pleased to announce that 75 eighth grade students from throughout St. Lucie County met the LPA criteria for acceptance to our IB track for the Class of 2022. We are excited to welcome these highly motivated, high achieving students to our LPA IB family.

Kind regards,

Carol Kuhn IB Coordinator

Art News

High School art students are exhibiting their drawings and ceramic pieces at the St. Lucie County Fair in the Home Arts Building. Take time while you are at the fair to stop by and look at all of the wonderful things the art students are creating at LPA. Ms. Duran and Ms. DiTullio’s students will once again be participating in the 11th annual Empty Bowls Project. Over 200 bowls have been made by our students and will be donated for the event which raises money for the Treasure Coast Food Bank. Bowls are $15.00 and the event will be held on March 10th at the Fort Pierce Farmer’s Market from 8:00am - 12:00pm. Each $15.00 donation will include a bowl, a bowl of soup and homemade bread. Come join us as we fight hunger, one bowl at a time!

Drivers Ed News The last Drivers Ed class for this school year begins April 5th and ends May 17th. As always, this is first come, first serve so you need to sign up

NOW if you would like your son/daughter to take the class.

Through A Treasure Coast Driving School your child receives the necessary attention and help with confusing on the road questions; they receive on the

road instruction specifically geared to make them a cautious and safe driver; and they are taught by teachers that have a heart to see your child excel

and be the best driver they can be.

Remember, most insurance companies will give a discount for students who have taken our drivers ed course and a discount will definitely help

when its time for your son/daughter to get their drivers license!!!

Visit AtreasureCOASTdrivingSCHOOL.com. Just click on the white sign that says, “Drivers Ed At My School” and go to the LPA school link.

You may see something that says there are only 27 seats but do not let that discourage you. If a student does not show up the first day, they automatically lose their seat so even if you are #50, your child may still have a good chance of being accepted.

March is the time for our testing window to blossom into full bloom. It also gives our students the opportunity to show off what they have learned.

Seniors and eighth graders enrolled in Florida Virtual School classes who need the credits for graduation, will need to have all coursework completed and grades posted by May 1.

All students who are planning to take Dual Enrollment classes for the first time, either Summer 1, Summer 2, or Fall, will need to take the P.E.R.T (placement test) at Indian River State College prior to March 30. The registration window begins March 30 and ends May 8 for Summer A classes, June 25 for Summer B classes, and August 1 for Fall classes.

Seniors, please check out the Guidance hallway, listen to the morning announcements, check Naviance and the Education Foundation website http://www.efslc.org for listings of scholarship opportunities.

Juniors check out the summer programs University of Florida has to offer. Go to www.cpet.ufl.edu. Applications are open.

On March 3, 2018, The Crossing Community Church located at 5200 Oleander Avenue, Fort Pierce is offering free dresses. Students can trade a dress or just choose a dress from their selection. Shoes will also be available until supplies last. Students can enjoy a free raffle for a chance to have their hair professionally styled. The event is scheduled from 9 am – 1 pm.

On Wednesday, March 7 juniors will be taking the SAT on campus. We are asking that all juniors be present and take advantage of this free testing opportunity.

Seniors, please turn in all college acceptance letters to Mrs. Salvador, Guidance Clerk, in the front office (whether you plan to attend or not). All scholarship award letters should be given to Mr. Gray, Room 251.

If you haven’t completed the Bright Futures Scholarship, go to www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org. For the FAFSA, go to

www.fafsa.ed.gov. Complete your applications today. You don’t want to miss out on the thousands of dollars that could be yours.

IMPORTANT REMINDER FOR PARENTS

Parents, if your son or daughter has to leave school before 1:34pm, please send a note to school with your child containing the following

information:

1)Child’s name

2)Time leaving

3)Who is picking the child up

4)A phone number where you can be reached

Please remind your child to take the note to the front desk first thing in the morning so the information can be verified. Sending a note with

your child will not only help the teachers plan accordingly, but it will also help you as it will reduce the amount of waiting time when you

come to pick up your child. PLEASE ALSO KEEP IN MIND, students under the age of 18 are NOT permitted to sign themselves out of

school for any reason, even if they have a signed note. A parent/guardian must physically sign the student out of school.

Please also remember, any time you come to pick up your child from school, BRING A PICTURE I.D. with you.

As a reminder: students should not be dropped off in the morning prior to 6:45am, as we do not have adequate supervision on the campus until that

time. This is a safety/supervision concern and we would appreciate everyone’s adherence to this request.
