Tiny Tattoo Sensors

Tiny Tattoo Sensors may put an end to finger pricking! Imagine having a tattoo that changes colour with your rising BGL’s?

Scientists are testing these high-tech sensors, which will be embedded

under the skin much like a tattoo.

How will it work? The tiny spheres in the tattoo will contain a special ink that reacts

with the glucose in your system and changes colour when your BGL

rises. The tattoo’s inventor, biomedical engineer Heather Clark, has

already had positive results testing the tattoo on mice … followed by

human trials, hopefully within the next five years.

Kids Corner -

Hi ... my name is Dylan. I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in August last year

and at the time I was 9 years old.

I was sick for five weeks, I got to the stage where I had no energy, was losing weight and drinking a lot of water. On the Monday I got up and did soccer training, the next day I couldn't get out of bed. Mum said "that's it you're going to the doctor." Mum wanted me to have blood tests and an x-ray. We did the blood tests and the x-ray on that same day.

The next day I pulled out of school because Mum and Dad got a call saying "Get Dylan to the hospital quick, he's got uncontrollable diabetes." When we got to the hospital a doctor sniffed my breath and he said "He's got Type 1 Diabetes."

When the doctors put a dip in my arm they had 5 nurses holding me down. That night I had to have my blood tested every hour. I couldn't sleep all night.

Our training started the next morning after my needle. (I had a real fear of needles my Mum says) After 6 days in hospital I had to stay home for a week. I had two half days before going back full days to school. The school has been really helpful. I gave myself my first needle in November but Mum had to bribe me with a Bionicle.

When it was the Walk to Cure Mum and Dad announced they were forming a support group for children and families with Type 1 Diabetes.

I do Rhee tae kwon do twice a week. I also went straight back to soccer plus I love swimming. I am the best carb counter in my family. Dad reckons I'm dreaming.

I hate Diabetes and I hope one day a cure is found, but for now I live with it and make the most of each day. My life now has changed from how it used to be.

from Dylan .. bye

Important Questions To Ask Before Joining A Clinical Trial

Has this trial been approved and registered by an appropriate governing body? Why is this trial important and what will the results mean to me?

What are the possible risks and side effects? Will any side effects happen now or years later?

What will taking part involve (time off work, school, medical tests, special diets etc.)?

Is there any travel required and will I be reimbursed for this?

How will my privacy be protected?

Will the results of the trial be made available to me & will I be able to find out what treatment regime I was

on?

Handy Hints

Add a teaspoon of water when frying ground beef. It will help pull the grease away from the meat while cooking

To really make scramble eggs or omelets rich add a couple of spoonfuls of sour cream, cream cheese or heavy cream in and then beat them up.

Add garlic immediately to a recipe of you want a light taste of garlic and at the end of the recipe if you want a stronger taste of garlic.

Heat up leftover pizza in a non-stick skillet on top of the stove, set hear to med-low and heat till warm. This keeps the crust crispy. No soggy micro pizza.

Letter from Dr Chris Ryan

Dear Diabetic Support Group

Congratulations on setting up such an enthusiastic support group for

children with Type 1 Diabetes.

As we all know, Diabetes is a chronic disease with an enormous impact on the children, their family and the wider community.

As health professionals we offer advice based mainly on our clinical knowledge and the experience of watching many families cope with the many aspects of having a child with Diabetes. A support group can offer much more! The best practical advice comes from someone who has ‘lived’ what you are going through. The advice and emotional support given between members of a well run support group is invaluable.

Like many of my professional colleges, Diabetes is one of my passions. I feel very privileged to be able to help and support children and their families through the ’shock’ of diagnoses, and the ups and downs of daily life with Diabetes. I have met wonderful people and have learnt as much, if not more, from you all as you have learnt from me.

It is with great enthusiasm I look forward to working closely with you all in the support group. I will be more than happy to help in any way I can.

Congratulations and Good Luck!

Chris
