Greetings Greyhound Nation,

As we enter the month of November, we find ourselves two weeks into the second nine weeks and continuing our path toward academic achievement and success. Exciting things are happening at Lincoln Park Academy that we want to share and make you aware of.

With fall sports moving into the post-season, we are proud to report that our girls’ golf team won the district cham-pionship and have advanced to the regional tournament. Congratulations to Angelica Hollman for garnering the “Top Medalist” award at districts. In boys’ golf, two players qualified to participate in the regional tournament; Calvin Hong and Dylan Rizzo. The girls bowling team won the district championship for the fourth consecutive year and advanced to the state tournament, with one member of the boys’ team, David McDaniel qualifying for state competition as well. Our girls’ cross country team finished second in the district and advanced to the regional meet. Finally, our girls volley ball team advanced to regional competition. Way to go Greyhounds!!!

As for the performing arts, fall performances took place during the month of October. Our students showcased their musical talents during the middle school and high school band concerts, along with the orchestra concert. If you were not in attendance for either of these performances, you missed amazing performances, which were lauded by all in attendance. LPA was also honored with the opportunity to host the annual “Giving Concert,” which benefits our children and community.

Report cards were sent home on Tuesday, October 30th with all students. As a reminder, school will also be closed on Monday, November 11th in observance of Veteran’s Day. Please be sure to pay close attention to this month’s calendar, as there are other events taking place this month.

Thank you once again for your support as we move into the winter months and one step closer toward our meeting our goal of ensuring all students make learning gains and achieve success!

IB students have completed the first quarter of the fall semester with great success. The new focus will be to work on developing different routines and strategies to achieve even greater success for the second quarter. Major assignments for seniors this month include the final draft of the Extended Essay due on November 16, and the CAS check on November 26. Every major assignment completed is a significant milestone on the IB journey. These two assignments are the core of the IB curriculum and students are required to achieve a passing score on both components to be eligible for the IB Diploma. Quarter two brings an exciting learning experience for our IB juniors. Students are taking advantage of an educational partnership with Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. DP juniors from IB Biology HL and IB Chemistry SL will work in cooperative groups at the Indian River Lagoon to complete field work for their internal assessment projects. An overview lecture on the IRL is given to the entire group by a consultant from HBOI. At the end of the lecture students

brainstorm what aspects of this ecosystem could be investigated and decide the appropriate order in which to carry out their research. In the field, scientists from HBOI guide the students through the data gathering process to measure various biological and

physical parameters at three locations within the estuary. Back in the classroom, the groups compile the data to be shared with all students. In this way, each student will have the entire set of data. Each student chooses an independent variable to write a lab report. Please visit our IB section of the LPA website for full details regarding the Group IV experience. Juniors please remember that the Biology/Chemistry internal assessment work is due on November 28. Additionally, juniors must complete the Formal Reflection Session 1, with the EE supervisor from November 5-9. Please plan to submit the Extended Essay proposal and consent form to the EE coordinator by November 9. Documentation for the CAS check

should be submitted by November 8. MYP students are busy with a variety of projects this month including Science Fair, Project Citizen, and DAR essays. These students are also working to reduce, reuse, and recycle on the school campus. To schedule a pickup for your class,

contact Mrs. Lyshon or Ms. Gonzalez.

Finally, the SLC High School Attractor Program Information Night will be held at the Fenn Center on November 27. This event signals the beginning of the application process for acceptance to our LPA IB Diploma Program for the class of 2023. Eighth grade students taking Algebra 1 or Geometry, who achieved a minimum 3 or above on the 2018 Reading and Math FSA, with a middle school GPA of 3.0, are encouraged to apply. More information can be found on the district website at stlucie.k12.fl.us/parents-students/. Look for ‘Attractor Programs’ for additional details.

Kind regards,

Carol Kuhn IB Coordinator

Parents and students, as we begin the 2nd nine weeks, students please make sure you are keeping up with your grades, going to class every day on time, and turning in assignments on time. Semester grades are calculated using the two 9 week’s grades and the semester exam grade, so if you didn’t do well for the 1st nine weeks, you have a chance to make up for it this second nine weeks. Remember, cumulative grade point averages are calculated using only the semester grades. Seniors, please check the Guidance hallway bulletin board, in the front office for scholarships, internships and event information. Seniors, please take note of the following scholarships: The Robertson Scholarship offered to students planning to attend Duke or Chapel Hill in Fall 2019. The scholarship includes 4 years of tuition, room and board, three funded summer experiences, funding for conferences and seminars and four years of leadership development. Application due November 15. Email: [email protected] for more information.

The University of Miami is offering summer experiences to sophomores and juniors. All students can save 50% off if application is received by December 1. You can apply at https://ssp.dcie.miami.edu/apply-now.

The American University in Washington DC is offering five scholarships to students with a 3.8 unweighted grade point average. You can apply at http://www.american.edu/DouglassScholars. The deadline is January 15. Please check in Naviance (http://student.naviance.com/lpa) for other scholarship opportunities.

The Spring Dual Enrollment window opened October 30th. Please check the Indian River State College website at www.irsc.edu for classes to be offered spring semester. If you are a current dual enrollment student, you may make your selections and present your form IRSC #68 to your counselor for approval.

From the Dean’s Desk

“In a world full of average, be outstanding.”

November is the 11th month of the year and one of four months with a length of 30 days. It received its name from the Latin “novem” meaning nine. Interesting fact: Parker Brothers introduced the world to the Monopoly game on November 5, 1935. Never Forget School- Wide Expectations PROMPT, PREPARED, PRODUCTIVE, PRACTICE RESPECT, PRACTICE SAFETY No Late Days Ensure that you arrive at school and to class in a timely manner. “To be early is to be on time, and to be on time is to be late.” Notice to Drivers As a reminder, parking on campus is a privilege. Excessive absences, tardies, dress code violations, and inappropriate G.P.A. will result in your parking being suspended or revoked. Also, illegally parked vehicles are subject to be towed at the owner’s expense. Park only in your assigned space and follow all school-wide expectations. If you have any concerns, contact the high school dean's office. Non-Negotiable Dress Code Dress Codes are an important part of the climate of schools. Our goal is to always provide an environment that is free of distractions, safe, orderly and conducive to learning. Compliance is key! Collared shirt, tucked-in all the way around, belt visible. Pants should not have any rips, tears, or holes. Logos must be pocket-sized. Now You Are On Campus Arrival - Before exiting the bus, make sure all electronic devices (includes but is not limited to cell phones, tablets, blue tooth, headphones, and earbuds) are turned off and put in book bags and you are in compliance with LPA dress code (collared shirt, belt, tucked in all the way around so belt is visible). Please use the sidewalk; walking through the parking lot is prohibited. No Place Like Home Dismissal - Once the dismissal bell rings, students are expected to immediately report to the bus area, check the list and board their assigned bus. If your bus number is not on the list, move to the front of the bus loading ramp to await the second bus wave. A "final call" for wave one buses will serve as a warning for departure. Once buses are moving, step back from the safety rails and DO NOT WALK between buses. Walkers & Bike Riders When crossing the street on Avenue I, please use the crosswalk that has been provided for your safety.
