PRESIDENTS REPORT

Hi Members,

Thanks to those that helped run and competed in our May motorkhana at Ansell Park. We had 18

entrants from our club and a number of others that made a great day. The biggest issue later in the day

was the lack of wind to clear the course with the dust hanging around like a fog where you could only

just see the two flags in front of you. Waiting for four or five minutes did nothing you just had to go into

the course and hopefully you could see or judge where the next flag “should” be.

The next event on the club championship calendar is the WRX motorkhana at Sydney Motorsport Park

on Sunday 19th June, hope to see you there to score more points in the club championship. If not there

are a couple of motorkhanas run by CACA on the 18th June at SMP and on the 25th June at Ansell Park to

gather more event points.

All the best

Phil Whitaker

Devotions – June 2016 Introduction

We continue our series looking at the church, at how God sees his people, not just as a collection of individuals,

but as the pinnacle of his creation and the ultimate purpose of our being. This month we see that the earthly

church is about the gathering of God’s people so that we can hear him and obey him to ‘live long in the land’.

The Reading Deut 4:1

“And now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the rules that I am teaching you, and do them, that you may live, and go in and

take possession of the land that the Lord, the God of your fathers, is giving you. 2 You shall not add to the word that I command you,

nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you. 3 Your eyes have seen what the

Lord did at Baal-peor, for the Lord your God destroyed from among you all the men who followed the Baal of Peor. 4 But you who

held fast to the Lord your God are all alive today. 5 See, I have taught you statutes and rules, as the Lord my God commanded me, that

you should do them in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. 6 Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom

and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise

and understanding people.’ 7 For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the Lord our God is to us, whenever we call

upon him? 8 And what great nation is there, that has statutes and rules so righteous as all this law that I set before you today?

9 “Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your

heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children's children— 10

how on the day that you stood

before the Lord your God at Horeb, the Lord said to me, Gather the people to me, that I may let them hear my words, so that they may

learn to fear me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children so.’ (ESV)

The teaching

This passage describes Moses’ address to the Israelites just before they were about to enter the promised land.

They had gathered on the eastern shores of the River Jordan and were about to enter into the land that had been

promised to Abraham and his descendants 400 years previously. 40 years earlier God had assembled the people

at Horeb (Mt Sinai) where he had given the 10 commandments on 2 tablets of stone (that is 2 copies of the

covenant, just as each party to a contract gets their own copy) just after they had been miraculously released

from their Egyptian captivity. The mountain was covered with smoke and fire and thunder, but God didn’t

gather them there just to see that spectacular event. He had gathered them there (literally churched them) both

at Horeb, and also now on the verge of entering the promised land so that they could hear him and obey him,

preparing them live long in the land and prosper.

We see that the ear is more spiritually important than the eye. Being part of God’s people is always about

hearing. We gather to listen to God, to hear his commands, to obey them and to teach them to our children’s

children so that they will become our wisdom and understanding. Seeing, feeling, touching is not the heart of

the church. It is an opportunity to hear and to obey. In one sense it is dangerous to do church because it is also

an opportunity to disobey. Further on in Deuteronomy Ch 18 the people asked not to hear God at all for fear of

their lives. So it is with us; if we hear God’s word and then choose to ignore it we do so at our eternal peril. In

those days God in his grace sent the prophets for the people to hear his word. In these last days we have the

word from heaven in Jesus Christ, who, as we see in Hebrews Ch 1 is superior to the prophets in every way.

It is easy to live for what we see in this material world. There is a day to come when we will see God face to

face and gather with God’s church from down through the ages. In the meantime, we are to gather to hear the

word of God’s grace in Jesus Christ and to obey it, and we are sent out to pass on this message of grace.

Prayer

Father, we pray that you will shape us into hearers and doers of your word. We long for the day when we will

see you, but in the meantime, may we spur each other on to hear and obey your word of grace as we gather

together as your church in this world.
