Dear Parents, Students and Friends of Trio World School,

Welcome to the February-March edition of Trio Times!

The past months have been lled with learning and fun and the students have worked hard to end the second term in beauty. We all have the feeling that this school year is by far the best one in the history of Trio and we are condent that we are building on solid foundations with a unique, highly spirited teaching staff which, with the exception of a very few, will return next year to our ever dynamic student body. Yes, Trio World School is the place to be for the years to come!

Last month, we organized a very successful Primary Football tournament and the Years 10 and 11 went on a memorable excursion to Kerala. This constituted a rst for the High School student and the success of this expedition is an indication of many more to come as learning without walls is encouraged in our holistic curriculum. Oh! I should also mention that nineteen of our teachers have completed a continuous professional development course in February with Hibernia College where they learned more about English, differentiation, leadership, and Art in the classroom.

I also wish to conclude my message by reminding you of two important dates this month:

March 13th: Report cards issued and sent home with the students.March 14th: Students dismissed at 2:00pm to leave time for our second Parent-Teacher meeting. Nursery to Year 6 homeroom teachers will meet the parents in their respective homeroom while the specialists and year 7-13 teachers wil l be avai lable in the auditorium until 5:00pm.

I strongly encourage all to take the full advantage of meeting all teachers at the same time and also take the opportunity to encourage parents and teachers to regularly communicate by email, through the diaries or through Edmodo for years 7-13.

Ultimately, don’t miss the Art exhibition which will be held on that same day in the auditorium and in the lobby. Ms. Vanessa and Ms. Bhargavi’s students are excited to show what they are capable of.

Have a great read!

One morning in February, Nursery children had a beautiful exhibition with real pets which they shared with the rest of us. Dogs were the guest of honour during that morning; it was extraordinary to see our little ones interacting with their pets in the school environment. Well done, Nursery!

February has been a month of celebrations for us, the most important being the 100th day of school! Reception students are ofcially a 100 days smarter and each of them received a certicate saying so. We have been learning about Superheroes this month, both ctional and real. We were extremely excited about Valentine’s Day and we were talking about love in class…. We got some denitions or examples of love that are adorable and have found a place on our class door.

Ms Sonia Reception A

February in Year 1 has been a month of Science. Students are now working on a unit called “Materials”. It has been a pleasure to see the landscapes the little ones are creating using all the knowledge gathered during the month. Both our classes are full with marvellous information and research the children have been developing on wood, plastic, fabric, rubber etc…. Amazing work, Year 1!!!!

February for Year 2 has been a month of work and development of new processes especially in Science and Literacy. Students are getting ready with landscapes, books, experiments, models and more…. Everything looking towards a marvelous Science and Literacy week in April. Excitement is in the air! So proud of you guys!!!!!!!! And of course we can not forget the most recent Early Years eld trip to Krispy Kreme where students had the chance to learn about food processes and enjoy the sweet taste of happiness.

We, in Year 3, interviewed our parents on their jobs and gained quite a bit of information on what we were not already aware of. We also made postcards for students in the UK sharing information about ourselves, our pastimes, as well as our favourite person and place. Being the Valentine month, we expressed our feelings to our near and dear ones by making them cards. This month the Year 4’s took the school on a journey through Poetry Land during the school assembly, to share their wonderfully poetic side. They completed their studies about Circuits and Conductors and have been extremely engrossed in learning about the Second World pcandies spread around, making it a colourful month! Year 5 had a busy and an exciting month of February where we brought the Victorian Era to our classroom. Year 5 have learned about writing poems and have started experimenting with different genres of poem. Needless to say, they enjoyed making customized animations for their written poems.

February has been an extremely productive month for Year 6, both in the classroom and out on the eld too! Kudos to our Primary Football team that beat CIS!! (90% of year 6 was part of the team!). Apart from our guest speaker, Ms Deborah, talking to us about the importance of ‘Fairtrade’, and the well known Australian children’s author, Mr Ken Spillman, also sharing his thoughts on writing, the children are getting into ‘unexplored’ countries and learning more about them through research, to make their own ‘Passport Booklet’. Plaster of Paris magnets and homemade plastic were the highlights of our Science classes.

What’s up in Middle School? In Middle School, students are seldom seen in the corridors during breaks and lunch since they are busy playing table tennis in the chill out room. February was a celebration month in Middle School, as we have celebrated Simran, Kavya and Yong Bean's birthdays and we should not forget to mention Miss Ashok whose birthday was celebrated by the year 9's.

Kudos to year 7's also, who made an outstanding presentation of their medieval town, showing knowledge and pride! Primary and middle school kids and teachers really appreciated their work, not to speak of the parents who came to attend their children's performance. Thanks to everyone for encouraging the students. Counting, experimenting, dissecting… Math and sciences It has become more exciting with the projector installed in the Science room. Science documentaries are making their lessons more interesting and students are eagerly sharing their powerpoint presentations in class.

After learning the intricacies of our most vital organ, the heart, they were brave enough to dissect and see inside a goat’s heart. Experiments on distillation were conducted with the construction of a solar water still in the school eld. Fun did not stop there but continued with trying to make caramel in class, saturating sugar in water. They have been thrilled to discover that one colour is made up of several colours which they have been successful in separating, using chromatography. The young eager minds have been observed running around the school eld with a stopwatch, calculating their own speed. With optimum calculations regarding its area and perimeter and focusing on maximizing prots, the students have constructed their farms. The exciting journey of learning will continue in the coming months.

Reading, writing, making rhymes… English:

The English Department is buzzing with lots of activities. Year 7, who I call my 'Inspiring Poets', have been busy writing poems and critically reviewing them too. Year 8’s are having serious hot seat discussions and are busy with their Research Projects (Essay Writing). Year 9’s continue with their Worksheets and are engrossed in their Reading Book.

Earthquakes, steam engine and geographical development… History and Geography: In March, the Year 7’s will continue their trip to the centrze of the earth, experimenting with plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes eruptions and tsunamis. In History, we are looking forward to a Great Exhibition, where the Year 8’s will make their own Industrial Revolution, using Creya material to build 19th century engines…. On their side, the Year 9's are all busy working for the International School Award project, writing to pen pals all over the world and asking them geographical questions in various languages.... Arts….

Along with the High School students, our Middle School kids are preparing an Art Exhibition under the supervision of Miss Bhargavi. The display on the March 14th. French and Art Cross-Curricular project

In February, students from Years 7 to 10 started working on a cross-curricular project between French and Art. The main idea of this project is for our students at Trio to share something about India and Indian culture with students in France and for the French students to share something about France and French culture with our students at Trio. So, the students will create postcards in Art focusing on positive images of India and then write a letter in French to accompany this postcard to students – who will become their penpals - in France.

So far, the students have made presentations in French class whereby they have chosen positive images of India that are representative of India to them. They will now be choosing one of the images presented by either themselves or one of their classmates and working with Ms Bhargavi to create a postcard of this image. The students have shown interest and motivation in the project so far and I am really enjoying working with them on a cross-curricular cultural exchange project.

Ms Justine Our Olympics… PE:

On the 14th of February, the students had their sports Day organized by Mr Avinash. They were really brave, running and racing and playing footballs all morning!

The Year 7 girls and boys still had some energy on Saturday 22d of February.... Bravo for participating! And nally, kudos to all the students' of the month: Raul for Academics, Jonghyun for Improvement, Kavya for Citizenship and Meera for Athletics. You kids are doing a great job!!!

February has been a month of new horizons with Years 10 and 11 going on a eld trip to Wayanad where they received hands-on learning and bonding and maintained the school spirit. Please read the report below:….

CIE News

God’s own country…rather an experience of travelling thirteen hours in a bus…. We got off at Thekkady and the paradoxical Kerala chill caught us so off guard. We warmed ourselves over the typical Kerala Dosas and Chutney and Achii kept us entertained all day. All freshened up, we visited the tiger reserve where the main attractions were the indigenous monkeys followed by a very long and passive boat ride. Surprisingly, no tigers came into our view but many of us experienced wonderful cases of theft by the monkeys. We then started our travel to Munnar where we visited the spice plantations and the ower garden with pollen levels inducing chronic snot falling. The boys discovered the magic of faux jewellery in the form of magnetic earrings; such a punk style we never saw coming. Our evenings were taken up in shopping on the streets of Kerala

and the smell of hot chips wafting in from everywhere. Our next travel was to Alleppey with the heat seeping under our skin. We lazed on the beach with our already beautiful pigments growing ever more exotically indigenous. The trip slowly came to an end with our stay in the boathouse where the lights went out and screams lled the night as we watched, “The Conjuring”, which was traumatic to say the least.

Overall, this trip was a bonding exercise and all of us enjoyed every bit of it. We enjoyed the company of our chaperones very much, as the teachers let down their “force elds of education” and we got to see the other side of them. It was a worthy exercise and it would be good practice to continue such excursions with all students.Kangan Kher (Year 11)

A VISIT TO GOD’S OWN COUNTRY!

The students have now returned to school with batteries recharged and are eager to continue their studies which will form a part of their imminent reporting schedule. As Mr.Sebastien has noted, report cards will be issued on Thursday, March 13th and parents are invited to come to school on Friday, March 14th between 2 and 5pm to meet their student’s teachers and to discuss the progress made. I implore you to please attend this Parent Teachers Meeting as this is the best way to get a clear picture of how your child is performing and to make any necessary arrangements. I hope to see everyone there….

Education reects society’s ideals in the most beautiful way; it is in fact, business centers, money machines, and employee conveyor belts. Education is successful only when the child wants to learn. Learning involves curiosity. That’s it. Without curiosity Masaru Emoto wouldn’t have discovered vibrational resonance in water nor would have Leonardo built model aircraft prototypes if it was simply his “job”. The point of education is to interest the mind, not to earn money. School is to make friends, and develop emotional social connections which segregation and rigidity are barriers to. Teachers need to be friends with the children as they are probably the only adult voice a teenager would ever actually listen to; parents can’t do everything. We need the humanities and we need a little humanity in the corridors.

Humans are amazing complex creations, each of whom are unique and have their own needs. Standard education tends to be biased towards the logical kind of human, forgetting that humans don’t come in one standard package. Education is not about passing to the next grade, education is about developing the mind.

My great BIG Indian experience…. Ooh Perasit. Year 10

I came to India on 25th of August, 2013 and the reason was because of my education. Well, it just took 3 hours and 50 minutes from my country, "Thailand", to come here. Of course, I found a lot of cultural differences as well as differences in cuisine, although not much in the climatic conditions. The school "Trio" was recommended by one of my sisters, who is also my local guardian here. My rst day at school was really very nice as I saw many international students and one of them was from my place as well. This school is quite small, compared to other international schools, yet that is the reason perhaps why we all feel like a family of brothers and sisters from different parts of the world. The ''teacher-student" bonding is really strong here, which encourages me a lot and I guess that is one of the best part of my experience overall.

Although this is my rst year here, I'm really looking forward to making more memories. :)

Valentine’s Day, 2014 Ayatiin and Nikaya (Year 12 and Year 10)

Valentine’s Day is celebrated all over the world as a day to celebrate love. It is now considered an occasion to especially appreciate all relationships. This festival has come to be known as the day to recognize love in all forms.

This year, at Trio, we sent out red roses and chocolates declaring our love for one another which created a feeling of oneness in the entire community both among students and teachers alike. Ah, there’s nothing like the feeling of being remembered and loved!! We were all dressed in red, white and pink and love was denitely in the air this year!

Student Council News! Chiara and Santhosh (Year 13)

Our last Student Council meeting culminated with the aim of bringing together our fellow students and working towards the progress of our school. It was brilliant to see the cohesiveness and school spirit brought to life particularly by two major events that took place last December – The Christmas Play and the F.A.M.E. Carnival. Kudos to all teachers and students and the management for their dedication and support in hosting the biggest events the school has seen in its short life of seven years. We would especially like to thank all those who selessly put in all their effort into making F.A.M.E. a great success.

February saw us setting up the Valentine’s Day Celebrations for our school. Again, we were backed by our teachers and students who worked very hard in the planning and execution of this event; for which we are truly grateful. We believe there is a lot more potential in our fellow students which will surely come to fruition one day! Of course, it is without doubt that we would not have been able to pull any of this off without the continuous guidance of our teachers who deserve much more credit than that which is given to them so we would like to take this time to thank them all for their support and hard work.

We would also like to make a special mention about the appreciable actions carried out by Apolina, Eden, Ha Yeon and Jieun to raise funds for the children of the Kodigehalli Government School. A little help from your side would go a long way and we hope you would like to be part of enriching a grateful child’s life.

On a nal note, we would like to point out that the Student Council’s purpose is to represent and work for the improvement of our peers’ school lives. However, throughout our course, we have made a pleasant discovery that our relationship has developed into something more symbiotic and harmonious - something which we wish to carry on during our term and beyond.

For the TWS Student Council – Chiara and Santhosh.
