Over 200 Fun-Filled Classes!
We Have It All!
2011
Grades K–12
WelcomeWelcomeWelcomeWe are pleased to offer a wide assortment of educational opportunities for the youth of our communities. You will find a rich variety of activities to stimulate young minds and to provide meaningful learning experiences. Summer can be a wonderful time to explore new areas of interest and to visit the campuses of Montgomery College. We have been serving our community as a learning institution, for all ages, for more than 50 years and look forward to having you with us this year.
Keep in mind that you should make every effort to sign up as soon as you can for the programs of your choice because we accept students in the order that we receive their registration forms. Pending funding, a limited number of scholarships (one course per child) may be available this summer (scholarship eligibility is determined by qualification for Montgomery County’s free or reduced meal program). The deadline for Scholarship submission is May 27, 2011.
Also, remember that we are here to answer any questions you may have by simply calling us at 240-567-7264 or 240-567-7917.
Enjoy.
Sincerely,
George Payne Vice President Workforce Development & Continuing Education

Biology CampSBiology CampSTakoma Park/Silver Spring Campus
Monday–Friday • 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
Grades 5–9 [GT]
Anatomy and Physiology in DiversityThroughout time, no issue has been of more interest than learning about our origins. Where did we come from? What did our ancestors look like? Where did they live? Learn information underlying recent ideas on human evolution and examine the evidence that links modern humans with other higher animals (primates). Learn to describe the parts of a modern human skull and distinguish between the skulls and the skeletons of modern male and female humans and apes. Come prepared to dissect animal parts, including eyeballs, heart, stomach, lungs, and learn their func-tions. Not for the squeamish! Course: YOU280$320 + $65 fee = $385; Non-Md. residents add $160 CRN#: 11362 7/11–7/15 CRN#: 11378 7/25–7/29 CRN#: 11379 8/1–8/5
Biology: Life in the Ocean Marine Biology is the study of marine life. Examine marine organisms from each of the major oceanic zones. Both live and preserved specimens will be available for ob-servation, experimentation, or dissection (preserved only). Develop a greater appre-ciation and understanding of marine systems, specifically the role these representa-tive organisms play in the ecosystem. Particular attention will be paid to the anatomy, reproduction, and ecology of representative organisms. Many of the labs will be messy. Instructor: Dr. Ijeoma Otigbuo Not for the squeamish! Course: SCH963 4 Sessions$300 + $65 fee = $365; Non-Md. residents add $160CRN#: 11381 7/5–7/8
Course: SCH862 5 Sessions$320 + $65 fee = $385; Non-Md. residents add $160CRN#: 11368 7/18–7/22CRN#: 11380 8/8–8/12

The magic in every camper comes to life as never before when they are empowered to be as creative as they were all born to be. Our digital arts and S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathmatics)programs are powered by the camper’s innate imagination, and designed to bring their ideas to life in a fun, simple, learning environment. From concept to creation and from pre-production to premiere! Each class chal-lenges your child to reach their full potential. All Black Rocket programs mirror real life experiences and the collaborative nature of the creative process. To ensure your child’s experience is of the highest level, students work in pairs or teams for most of the design process.
Camps are designed under the creative direction of Richard Ginn, Teacher of the Year at US News and World Report’s #7 ranked High School in the United States, experienced school administrator, and Bill Zengel, who has two decades of award winning work as a writer and producer in advertis-ing, television and more.
LEGO® GamesCombine your two favorite activities: LEGOs and Video Games! In this program create your own LEGO universe, characters, and adventures in an interactive 2-D Video Game. Everyone is welcome in this one-of-a-kind class. At the end of the class, leave with a LEGO 2-D game that can be shared with friends and family on a password protected Web site.Course: YOU325 $175 + $75 fee = $250; Non-Md. residents add $140Rockville CampusAges 8–10 CRN#: 11516 8/1–8/5 M,T,W,R,F 9 a.m.–12 p.m.Ages 11–14CRN#: 11517 8/1–8/5 M,T,W,R,F 1–4 p.m.

Lightz! Camera! Action! So you want to make a movie? In this fun, exciting camp, learn the dynamics of storytelling, shooting, editing, graphics, sound, and more! From pre-production to your own premiere, learn by doing with an expert and ulti-mately make your very first short movie. The last day of camp will be the WORLD PREMIERE of your “I Made It Myself” production! Invite a select group of family and friends to your premiere on the big screen. All equipment supplied and student created films will be available on a
password protected Web site to share with friends and family.Course: YOU324 $175 + $75 fee = $250; Non-Md. residents add $140Rockville CampusAges 8–10 CRN#: 11514 7/25–7/29 M,T,W,R,F 9 a.m.–12 p.m.Ages 11–14CRN#: 11515 7/25–7/29 M,T,W,R,F 1–4 p.m.
Television & Screen ActingFrom the first time you said “let’s pretend!” you were learning to act. Yet the art of acting is a true craft, one that the masters learn, practice, and hone. The greatest actors take the audience on a journey with them. Embark on this journey with Black Rocket and in this camp, you’ll learn: audition-ing, scene blocking, understanding context, learning lines, script reading, working with a director and the camera—refining each and every take. Spe-cial emphasis will focus on commercial shots, television and movie scenes, and the use of improv as a learning technique. Student headshots, resumes, and commercials will be hosted on the Black Rocket student Web site to share with friends and family!Course: YOU326$175 + $75 fee = $250; Non-Md. residents add $140 Rockville CampusAges 8–10 CRN#: 11518 7/18–7/22 M,T,W,R,F 9 a.m.–12 p.m.Ages 11–14CRN#: 11519 7/18–7/22 M,T,W,R,F 1–4 p.m.

YLTAFinancial Literacy ProgramWithout financial literacy and the knowledge of how money works, young people will not be prepared to face the world that awaits them. There is no better time than NOW to increase teen awareness regarding money matters, our economy, the financial markets, the risks of reckless spend-ing, and careless borrowing. Research has shown as little as 10 hours of personal financial education will positively affect student spending and savings habits. With hands on activities, basics of investing, as well as advanced financial planning strategies, student quickly learn to set attainable goals and follow a realistic step-by-step plan toward financial success. These courses have been skillfully designed to provide young people with an unparalleled and solid financial foundation—a priceless gift that they will utilize their entire lives. Camp Director: Afarin Homer
Financial Fitne$$ for TeensGrades 6–8 [GT]Many parents don’t feel prepared to teach their children about basic personal finance. Mad ScienceMad Science
Mad Science is the largest and most comprehensive provider of science enrichment and educational services within the metro area. They perform their programming throughout the MCPS system and work closely with the Montgomery County science curriculum. These hands-on science programs are themed around a particular area of science and include such topics as rocketry, magnets, polymers, and even the science of toys. During the week-long camps students will engage in exciting hands-on activities, watch spectacular demonstrations, participate in inquiry-based discussions, and take home things that they have made themselves like model rockets, periscopes, Mad Science putty, and more. Mad Science programs offer students a chance to see just how cool science can be!
Grades K–6 This action-packed week will focus solely on rockets and the physics of rocket flight. After learning the model rocket safety code, you will build a number of different rockets and participate in the launching, mission control, propulsion, and recovery of the rockets you build.
