July Montana District News

WOW! Only three short weeks until we go “Back to the Pen”. I am so looking forward to seeing all of your smiling faces. We will need to make some safety modifications, but otherwise everything is still a go, and the registrations have been rolling in. Don’t forget your red, white and blue attire and favorite cowboy hat for Saturday. We will have lots of activities going on and some beautiful rides. Since our weather has been less than desirable at times, come prepared for riding in inclement weather, for instance, rain gear. Dale has adjusted the RV SIG Music Ranch dates and times on the facebook page, so remember to check it out at GWRRA Montana District. There are several courses on line that you can take via zoom call. So if you need to update your Co-rider course this would be an easy way to do it. Remember Co-riders need to stay updated to maintain their level of riding also. In spite of our challenges this spring, we had an awesome rendezvous in Three Forks. David Frodsham won the 50/50, and almost everyone won a door prize of some kind. We took a ride from Three Forks to Norris Hot Springs, and drove along the Madison River and the Gallatin Gateway into Belgrade for ice cream at the DQ (of course). We made it back to Three Forks before it rained. The hotel was gracious enough to let us have the rest of the party in the lobby, and also gave us coupons for cinnamon rolls or other breakfast item at Wheat Montana. The little café that we usually eat at was awesome, they set us up on the patio, we got a little wet towards the end of dinner, so went inside for ice cream. The girls who waited on us were great, and we helped them clear the tables in the rain. All in all everyone had a wonderful time and we shared a lot of laughter. That’s all I have for now. If anyone has any questions about rally or anything else, I am here to answer them for you. Have a safe and fun 4th of July! “See you down the road”

This is the breakfast that the travel lodge will be serving, a packaged pastry, Fruit a granola bar and a bottle of water. We’re going to be eating very well at the “Pen Center”. Contact Betty ASAP if you want meals at the “Pen Center” 406-690-4222 or [email protected].

To update your information online:

If you have never logged on to this sight, you will first need to obtain log-in information. This can be done by clicking on the Welcome (Log-in) page where instructed.

After you complete this process you will receive an email with your username and password.

After you have received your username and password return to the Log-in page and on the left side of the screen click on “Manage My Records”. Click Continue. Enter your username and password. Click Continue.

At the Choose prompt, select the drop-down menu and choose “Modify My Record” and click on the “Go” button. After you have made your changes click the Submit Changes button. This will update your information.

When you have completed all the changes you need to make, be sure to log off.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact Customer Service at the phone number or email address listed above.

Updating Your Chapter Affiliation with Home Office

Your Chapter affiliation is automatically assigned using your zip code. You may find that the Chapter that feels most like “family” to you is not necessarily the Chapter to which you were automatically assigned. Many individuals don’t bother to change their affiliation (also called an “override”), but there are some excellent reasons to change your affiliation to your Chapter of choice. For example, if your chosen Chapter is participating in the Chapter of the Year program, it can benefit them to have you on their Area Report List if you are an active Chapter participant. If you wish to serve your chapter in an Officer position, you will also want to change your Chapter affiliation. To change your Chapter affiliation, contact Customer Service at 1-800-843-9460.

CW TIPS & TRICKS: Leaning Your Motorcycle into a Turn

http://www.cycleworld.com/2015/12/18/cycle-world-tips-and-tricks-leaning-your-motorcycle-into-a-

turn/

Tip #180 from the pages of The Total Motorcycling Manual.

Motorcycles stop faster and accelerate harder when they’re straight up and down, because that’s

when the tires put the most footprint to the road surface. Suspension components also work best

in the pure vertical plane—leaning the bike over puts side loads on them, encouraging binding

and frame flex.

But we need to lean bikes over in order to turn. What can we do about it?

Hanging off on the inside of the turn reduces the amount we need to lean a bike for a given

speed and turn radius. In each illustration, you can see three red circles: one represents the

center of gravity (CG) for the bike, one for the rider, and the third the combination of the two.

There’s little you can do about your bike’s CG, but by hanging off you can move your CG (and

thus the combined CG) lower and farther into the turn, and that means the bike won’t have to

lean over as much. In return, you’ll have a greater tire footprint and better suspension

compliance.

If you hang off far enough to actually touch your knee to the ground, you can also use your leg

as stabilizing support to help hold the bike up in the turn. Naturally, this is an advanced

Page 10: Montana District Newsletter Goldwing Road Riders ...Because the American Motorcycle Association (the organization that governs much of motorcycle competition in the United States)

10 | P a g e

technique only for racers, but even everyday riders can benefit from hanging off in turns,

especially in the rain or on poor pavement.

Any Montana GWRRA member can call or e-mail me (Chuck Bonnett), the Montana District Educator directly with any questions/concerns with your safety education needs and levels information.

Sunday August 2nd to Thursday August 14th Carbella BLM Camping, No Services.

RV-SIG (Recreational Vehicle-Special Interest Group) Sponsored by GWRRA Montana District

LOCATION: Carbella Recreation Site, 34 miles South of Livingston, MT DATES: August 2 -14. DEPARTURE DATE: August 2, 2020 MEETING LOCATION: Scheels parking lot (Shiloh Crossing) Billings, MT or Music Ranch. DEPARTURE TIME: Start your engines at 9:00 AM

PLEASE NOTE: The departure time is for those who want to go up early. This site is big enough to handle many rigs. If you only want to come up for a day, please do so.

Carbella Recreation Site is a BLM Bureau of Land Management camp site. Go South on US Highway 89, approximately 34 miles south of Livingston, turn right on Tom Miner Road. After 100 yards, turn right into the site. Actually, I don't think it is 100 yards after you turn off the highway. It is the first right after you turn. This fishing access site is located along the scenic upper Yellowstone River approximately 20 miles north of Yellowstone National Park. This campground has a Boat Ramp, Restrooms, Parking Area, Picnic Tables, Grills.

Camping on public lands away from developed recreation facilities is referred to as “dispersed camping.” Most of the remainder of public lands are open to dispersed camping, as long as it does not conflict with other authorized uses or in areas posted "closed to camping," or in some way adversely affects wildlife species or natural resources. Dispersed camping is allowed on public land for a period not to exceed 14 days within a 28 consecutive day period. The 28-day period begins when a camper initially occupies a specific location on public lands. The 14-day limit may be reached either through a number of separate visits or through 14 days of continuous overnight occupation during the 28-day period. After the 14th day of occupation, the camper must move outside of a 25-mile radius of the previous location until the 29th day since the initial occupation. The purpose of this special rule is to prevent damage to sensitive resources caused by continual use of any particular areas. In addition, campers must not leave any personal property unattended for more than 10 days (12 months in Alaska).

SUGGESTED ITEMS TO BRING: • We are going to have a pot luck dinner on Sunday night. So, please bring something to share with the group. Suggest salads, desserts, veggies, cakes and/or pies. Maybe bring steaks, chicken, hamburgers, etc. for your own main entre. We will be able to BBQ there. Chuck Bonnett is bringing his new grille. So, bring something for him to cook up for you.

• Bring chairs for your comfort to sit around the camp fire. If you have room in your vehicle, please bring a small amount of wood for the camp fire. • The Tom Miner Basin area is an area that does have bears. I do not think they come down this far down the mountain. But, if you have bear spray, I would suggest you bring some with you for your own protection. And keep it handy.

• Bring your binoculars or spotting scope as last year we watched some Grizzly Bears out grubbing in the evening up on the Tom Miner Basin Road.

• We cannot predict the weather, but I would suggest that you have your propane tank topped off before coming. Also, your gas tank full as your generator runs off the same tank as your engine if you have a motor home.

If you have a National Park pass to get into Yellowstone Park, please don't forget to bring it as it is only 20 miles to the park.

• The fishing is great on this part of the Yellowstone, so bring your fishing poles and flies or night crawlers. Sorry, Darrell, the water is not deep enough for your boat. • It would be nice if the musically inclined members could bring their instruments. It would also be nice to hear some cowboy campfire songs. Or, maybe some of you have some cowboy poetry that you would like to share with us; that would also be great. • Don't forget mosquito spray, sun block, etc. Not sure if the flies and bees will be bad that time of year, but maybe those screen covers that go over your food to keep them off would be a good idea.

SPECIAL NOTE TO ALL MONTANA CHAPTERS: This is a Montana District function. So, we are inviting anyone that wants to come from all three chapters and have a fun week with us. Everyone welcome! I would like input from all of you about where you might want to go so that all three chapters can be involved. There are a lot of dispersed camping spots within the state of Montana.
