BOUND FOR BIG SKYSkiing, hiking, biking, fly-fishing and golfing—expertly guided recreation activities

abound for Residence owners at Montage Big Sky, opening in 2021.BY BRIANA VERDUGO

T here’s something about coming home after a day of adven-turing that feels all the more satisfying. Your skin warmed by the sun, visions of natural grandeur imprinted in your mind and your family chatting about all the fun that was had. At the soon-to-open Montage Big Sky in south-western Montana, owners of the 39 Residences currently in development will have access to some of the most stunning scenery in the world, as well as an expert recreation team on hand to guide them through-out every activity.

In 2018, Olympic gold medalist and World Cup champion Bode Miller and his wife, Morgan, both residents of Orange County, California, decided it was time to get back to nature. The superstar couple (Morgan was a professional volleyball player) realized that life was too pre-cious to not bond with their family in the mountains, so they moved part time to the Spanish Peaks neighborhood of Big Sky, Montana, where Miller is part-nering with the Spanish Peaks Mountain Club and Moonlight Basin to promote Big Sky and help grow competitive youth skiing programs in the future.

The move to Big Sky, Miller says, was inspired by his desire to share with his family—which includes the couple’s two sons (with twins on the way) and Miller’s two children from pre-vious relationships—some of the aspects of his childhood in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. “Who do I want my kids to be? How do I want them to interact with the world, and how do I make sure they grow up to be solid humans?” he wrote on Instagram about the part-time move. “To gain grit, resiliency, humility, integrity, character, kindness, honesty. Nature can teach you so many of these things which is why

@morganebeck and I decided to expand on the lives we live in Southern California and provide the balance of Big Sky, MT. We are thrilled to be making the move to Big Sky part time and making more of life @spanish peaksmountainclub.”

Montage Magazine caught up with Miller, considered one of the greatest World Cup racers of all time, to ask him about fatherhood, nature and his new part-time home in Montana.

MONTAGE MAGAZINE: We like having you in Orange County. Why the part-time move to Montana?BODE MILLER: We bought a house in Spanish Peaks above the clubhouse, where we have ski-in, ski-out access and enough space for the entire family. We will be splitting our time between there and Southern California. I grew up in the mountains of northern New Hampshire in a simple “it takes a village” community on 450 acres of land. Other parents raised me as much as mine did. Big Sky is like one of those small villages, it’s part of the culture.

MM: What is your role with the Spanish Peaks Mountain Club and Moonlight Basin?BM: I’m a partner and the forward-facing brand

ambassador, developing child care programs for employees, ski school and race camps for Spanish Peaks and Montage, when it opens. I’ll be working to broaden awareness.

MM: You’re a regular at Montage in Laguna Beach and Deer Valley. Are you look-ing forward to working with Montage in Big Sky? BM: We’ve been in Orange County for seven years. My wife is from Coto de Caza and her parents live close to us. Everything we do is in Orange County: We sent her mom to Montage Laguna Beach for her birthday. We go to breakfast there. Our kids love it there. We’ve been Montage customers for as long as it’s been there. It’s my favorite place in this area, so it was a natural fit to become more involved. I’ve been to Montage Deer Valley a bunch and, when I met with [Montage International Founder and CEO] Alan Fuerstman and [Montage International President and COO] Jason Herthel, we saw eye to eye in terms of the family elements and service and ameni-ties of Montage. It’s in its own category, in my opinion, with its programming for kids and quality of service. You can come there with a family of five or six and everyone has a great time. u

The ski valet team gets to know owners so they can expect the highest level of anticipatory service. This means a team will understand the mountain conditions up to the minute and select the right equipment for skiers as well as know the needs of family members, especially children. “Owners will show up to warm,

dry ski boots, state-of-the-art ski tuning and waxing, with all their equipment easily acces-sible steps away from the lift,” Damman says.

For those interested in cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, biking or archery, Montage Big Sky has access to a private trail system that captures the essence of the Rocky Mountain region. Bikers will also have access to world-class demo bikes provided by Montage’s elite partners. Montage provides easy access to all these activities, as well as fully trained guides who are patient teachers and will make guests and residents feel com-fortable, whether they are try-ing something for the first time

or just need a refresher course. Recreation teams also offer special activity enhancements for those interested in unique, VIP experiences.

When the snow melts, owners can venture to Spanish Peaks Mountain Club’s 18-hole Tom Weiskopf-designed golf course, located just a stone’s throw from the resort. If a rod and a reel better suit an owner, there are three world-renowned fly-fishing rivers passing through the Big Sky region. While at the resort, it is just a short car ride to Yellowstone National Park, which is ideal for explora-tion. There are no limits to the epic experiences and elevated services that owners have ready and waiting for them at Montage Big Sky. M
