This year’s Montage series coincides with the openingcelebrations of Loyola University New Orleans’centennial. To mark this important occasion, we havechosen as our College’s theme the crucial role of the

arts in the Jesuit educational tradition. From our first events in September throughthe end of the academic year, we will bring the greater New Orleans communitydozens of outstanding performances, exhibitions, lectures, and masterclasses.Whether you are a lover of music, theatre, dance, or the visual arts, you will findsomething special in this year’s Montage calendar.

The Jesuits have been using the arts as a vehicle for educational enlightenment sincethe sixteenth century. Loyola’s College of Music and Fine Arts continues this tradition,which we will showcase during this year’s Montage season not only in our artisticproductions, but also in our educational events. Along with offering our usual array ofexciting musical performances, theatrical and dance productions, and artisticexhibits, we have slated a robust schedule of special lectures and other activities thathighlight our distinguished music therapy and education programs.

Through a special grant from the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation, we willexpand our spring Jazz Festival, which will include participation by local schools andartists. Our Invitational Band Festival will feature Loyola’s nationally known wind-ensemble, and conclude with a final grand concert where talented high schoolmusicians from around Louisiana and beyond join forces with our gifted students. We will increase our outreach to young actors and actresses in our unique“Celebrating the Stage” program for the youth of this area, and also the special workof our faculty and visiting artists in their efforts to educate young musicians, actors,dancers, and artists.

The Jesuit EducationalTradition and the ArtsLast year’s Montage theme, thecommemoration of the arrival of theJesuits to New France in 1610,allowed us to bring a number ofremarkable and well received eventsto campus. This year’s theme featuresa year-long celebration of the Jesuiteducational tradition and the arts.Very Reverend Adolfo Nicolás, S.J.,Superior General of the Society ofJesus, has spoken eloquently on thechallenge of encouraging our youngpeople to develop their creativity andlove of beauty. He noted that a Jesuiteducation today must promote depthof thought and imagination,particularly because we live in aworld marked by an overuse andoverreliance on technology:

“The globalization of superficialitychallenges Jesuit higher educationto promote in creative new ways thedepth of thought and imaginationthat are distinguishing marks of theIgnatian tradition.”

A Hungarian Celebration of Liszt and Bartok Logan Skelton ’83, professor of piano at the University of Michigan, will perform a solo recital of the composers Liszt and Bartok. Among several shorter works, the program will include twomonuments of the repertoire: Liszt's massive Sonata in B minor, as well as Bartok's own solopiano transcription of his Concerto for Orchestra.

GORDON HAWKINS presents a vocal masterclass

Gordon Hawkins is critically acclaimed throughout the world for his in-depth interpretations andluxuriant baritone voice. He has been heard on the Live BBC Radio broadcast as Alberich inGötterdämmerung with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall, as well as Live from theMetropolitan Opera broadcasts earlier in his career as Marcello in La bohème with Placido Domingoand Mirella Freni, and Silvano in Un ballo in maschera with Luciano Pavarotti and Aprile Millo.

Hawkins was a winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and the LucianoPavarotti International Vocal Competition, and has since worked under the baton of such notableconductors as James Levine, Sir Charles Mackerras, Julius Rudel, Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos, LucasFoss, Nello Santi, Marcello Viotti, and Yves Abel.

DECEMBER 2011CHRISTMAS AT LOYOLALoyola University celebrates the holiday season with Christmas at Loyola: A Musical Celebration at Holy Name of Jesus Church. Each year, Christmas atLoyola showcases several of the College of Music and Fine Arts’ ensembles,including the Loyola Chamber Orchestra, the Loyola Chorale and Women’sChorale, and the Loyola Brass Ensemble. The celebratory fare also features aChristmas carol audience sing-along. Christmas at Loyola has been an annualtradition of Loyola and its community for more than 19 years and continuesto be one of the most popular community events of the season.

JANUARY 2012

Jacques Offenbach’s The Grand Duchess of Gerolsteinpremiered in Paris in 1867, with a virtual “who’s who” ofEuropean royalty in attendance. Although it was a controversialburlesque of the German military, the operetta was instantlypopular and became the composer’s greatest world-wide hit, alandmark in French theatrical history. Grand Duchess was one ofseveral Offenbach works to be performed at the French OperaHouse in New Orleans during the 1867–68 season and wasprogrammed frequently throughout the 19th century. Loyola’snew production will be the first local revival since that time. Jointhe Duchess, General Boum, the lovers Fritz and Wanda, and alively chorus of peasants and soldiers for an evening of stirringand tuneful music, including the rousing Saber Song. Bill Fabris(The Pirates of Penzance, 2010) returns as stage director/choreographer, and Carol Rausch is music director/conductor.This performance is partially funded through the generoussupport of the J. Edgar and Louise S. Monroe Foundation.

THE ROMANTIC CELLO:Allen Nisbet, cello, and Yui Asano, piano

Allen Nisbet and Yui Asano present an eveningof enchanting, seldom heard cello and pianomusic by familiar composers such asMendelssohn, Dvorak, and Dohnanyi. Nisbet isrecognized as one of the finest cello artist-teachers in the country. He has been a fixture inthe music community of Loyola University andNew Orleans for many years. Asano is one of themost in-demand pianists in the New Orleansarea, collaborating frequently with musicians ofthe Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, as well asfaculty members of Loyola University’s Collegeof Music and Fine Arts.

David Sutanto and Shao-Shan Chen, duo piano recital David Sutanto and his wife, Shao-Shan Chen, attended the BostonConservatory and the College-Conservatory of Music of the University ofCincinnati, and are professors at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas.Sutanto has worked with Yo-Yo Ma, Sarah Chang, Julius Baker, ErickFriedman, and Dorothy DeLay. Chen has performed as piano soloist andchamber musician at the Carnegie Recital Hall and the Columbia ArtistsManagement Inc. (CAMI) Hall. Their duo piano program will include worksfor solo piano and piano four-hands by: Chopin, Liszt, Schubert, and Brahms.

LOYOLA JAZZ BAND WITH ED NEUMEISTER The Jazz Studies Program presents the Loyola JazzFestival, featuring a concert by guest artist EdNeumeister. The festival also offers classes andmasterclasses for large or small ensembles, elementarythrough junior college level. The classes are open to the public.

As a trombonist, Neumeister performed for 19 years with the Mel Lewis Big Band, and for 15 years in the Duke Ellington Orchestra under the direction of Mercer Ellington.

As a composer, he has received commissions from allover the world including The Metropole Orkest(Netherlands), Hamburg Radio Big Band (Germany),Maribor Opera Orchestra (Slovenia), Vanguard JazzOrchestra (New York), Milky Saxophone Quintet (Paris),and Sophisticated Ellington Project (Tokyo). Neumeisterhas recorded seven albums as a leader including modernbig band, trombone quartet, chamber trio, jazz quartetand quintet, as well as a concerto for cello and big band.

The Indian Arts Circle of New Orleans presents

THE FLOWERING TREE

Natya Dance Theatre brings alive this timeless folktale aboutrespect for nature. Set to an original score, The Flowering Treeweaves the story of a young girl, Kumudha, and her sisters, who areostracized by their community for being poor. Kumudha is given amantra from the heavens that alleviates her sufferings and allowsher to turn into a beautiful flowering tree. Reciting the mantra withrespect and sanctity, Kumudha can become herself again, but theworld around her takes advantage of her powerful gift.

Janet Swanzy, Ph.D., was the founder and director of the Preparatory Musicprogram at Loyola. Swanzy retired from Loyola in 1998, and later stepped down asthe director of the Prep program in 2000. She continued to teach private lessonsin the Preparatory program until 2005, when she passed away at age 71. Proceedswill benefit the Janet Sitges Swanzy Endowed Memorial Scholarship at LoyolaUniversity New Orleans.

The Loyola Department of Visual Arts presents the Bachelor of Fine Arts senior exhibition.Join us for the opening reception on May 7 at 5 p.m. as graduating art students will beshowcasing their capstone work in an individual exhibition in the Collins C. Diboll Gallery.

The Collins C. Diboll Art Gallery and Visual Arts Center is located on the fourth floor of theJ. Edgar and Louise S. Monroe Library on Loyola's main campus. The free exhibition is openduring the following hours: Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., and Sundays fromnoon – 6 p.m.

Scholarships to theJazz Band Camp will be awarded to outstanding performers at the LoyolaUniversity Jazz Ensemble Festival, held March 9 – 10, 2012. A Brief Overview of the Loyola University New OrleansCollege of Music and Fine ArtsDr. Ernest E. Schuyten, a violinist and former conductor of the New Orleans SymphonyOrchestra, founded the New Orleans Conservatory of Music and Dramatic Art in 1919. TheNew Orleans Conservatory, whose faculty members came from the New Orleans Symphonyand other artistic institutions in the city, merged with Loyola University, and in September of1932, became the College of Music. After Hurricane Katrina, two departments previouslyhoused in the Loyola’s College of Arts and Sciences—theatre and visual arts—were added tothe College of Music, creating the current College of Music and Fine Arts. It is the onlycollege of the performing and visual arts of the 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in theUnited States. It has become a dynamic force in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast region. Thecollege employs more than 60 full-time faculty members and a large number of part-timefaculty members, and includes 450 student music majors and nearly 200 majors in visualarts and theatre. Our graduates work in major orchestras, opera houses, ballet companies,recording and publishing companies, theaters, and art galleries throughout the world.
