Movie: BAD REPUTATIONJoan Jett is so much more than “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll.” It’s true, she became mega-famous from the number-one hit, but Jett put in her hard work long before the fame, ripping it up onstage as the backbone of the hard-rock legends The Runaways, influencing many musicians with her no-bullshit style. Bad Reputation gives you a wild ride as Jett and her close friends tell you how it really was in the burgeoning ’70s punk scene, and their interviews are laced with amazing archival footage. The theme is clear: even though people tried to define Jett and keep her stuck to one hit, she never compromised. She will kick your ass, and you’ll love her all the more for it. 2018. 1h35m.

Movie: BEL CANTOBased on Ann Patchett’s best-selling novel, the film is dramatic love story that follows a famous soprano (Julianne Moore, singing voice: Renée Fleming) who travels to a military dictatorship in South America to give a concert at a party for a wealthy Japanese industrialist (Ken Watanabe). Just as the gathering of diplomats and politicians convenes, the mansion is taken over by a guerrilla rebel group demanding the release of their imprisoned comrades. Threats are made, lives are lost, and a month-long standoff ensues. While they are confined to the house, the hostages and their captors, who speak different languages, are forced to find ways to communicate. 2018. 1h42m.

Movie: BIG SONIAIn the last store in a defunct shopping mall, 91-year-old Sonia Warshawski – great-grandmother, businesswoman, and Holocaust survivor – runs the tailor shop she’s owned for more than thirty years. But when she’s served an eviction notice, the specter of retirement prompts Sonia to revisit her harrowing past as a witness to genocide. A story of generational trauma and healing, Big Sonia also offers a laugh-out-loud-funny portrait of the power of love to triumph over bigotry, and the power of truth-telling to heal us all. 2017. 1h33m.

Movie: BISBEE ’17A nonfiction feature film set in Bisbee, Arizona, an eccentric old mining town just miles away from both Tombstone and the Mexican border. Radically com-bining documentary, Western, and musical elements, the film follows several members of the close-knit community as they attempt to reckon with – and reenact – their town’s darkest hour. In 1917, nearly two-thousand immigrant miners, on strike for better wages and safer conditions, were violently rounded up by their armed neighbors, herded onto cattle cars, shipped to the middle of the New Mexican desert, and left there to die. This long-buried, and largely forgotten, event came to be known as the Bisbee Deportation. 2018. 2h4m.

Movie: FIVE SEASONS: THE GARDENS OF PIET OUDOLF [encore]Revolutionary landscape designer Piet Oudolf is known for designing public works like New York City’s High Line and the Lurie Garden in Chicago’s Millen-nium Park that redefine our conception of gardens as works of art. This gor-geous, meditative documentary immerses viewers in his work, taking us inside Oudolf’s creative process. In English and Dutch with subtitles. 2018. 1h15m.

Movie: HALE COUNTY THIS MORNING, THIS EVENINGAn inspired and intimate portrait of a place and its people. The documentary looks at the lives of Daniel Collins and Quincy Bryant, two young African American men from rural Hale County, Alabama, over the course of five years. Collins attends college in search of opportunity while Bryant becomes a father to an energetic son. The audience is invited to experience the mundane and monumental, birth and death, the quotidian and the sublime. These moments combine to communicate the region’s deep culture and provide glimpses of the complex ways the African American community’s collective image is integrated into America’s visual imagination. 2018. 1h16m.

Special Movies: A BREAD FACTORY: PARTS ONE & TWOPremieres 10/26 at Village East Cinema (NYC) and Monica Film Center (LA)Inspired by and filmed at TSL, from director Patrick Wang (In the Family, The Grief of Others). Told in two films. In part one, after 40 years of running their community arts center, The Bread Factory, Dorothea (Tyne Daley) and Greta (Elizabeth Henry) are suddenly fighting for survival when a celebrity couple – performance artists from China – come to Checkford and build an enormous complex down the street catapulting big changes in their small town. In part two, Dorothea and Greta rehearse the Greek play, Hecuba. But the real theat-rics are outside the theater where the town has been invaded by bizarre tour-ists and mysterious tech start-up workers. There is a new normal in Checkford, if it is even really Checkford any longer. 2018. Part One 2h2m / Part Two 2h.

Live Performance 10/6: COWBOYSCOWGIRLSSaturday, October 6 at 9pm: Pioneers Go East Collective presents a perfor-mance and video installation examining two generations of gay men. The live performance includes a documentary interview with Agosto Machado, activist and drag queen who participated in the Gay Liberation Movement and Stone-wall, along with Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson. The work examines civil rights advancements for the LGBTQ+ in New York City, and sexual freedom from a younger gay man’s perspective. On stage performer and storyteller Daniel Diaz echoes and reflects, through movement and spoken word, Machado’s stories. Pioneers Go East Collective is a NYC-based community of multi-generational artists and activists in residence at La MaMa. Tickets $15 members / $10 students / $18 general. 45m.

Live in Concert 10/20: CHIP TAYLORSaturday, October 20 at 8pm: Songwriters Hall of Fame 2016 inductee Chip Taylor performs songs from his long career. Taylor has been writing and performing for nearly 60 years and shows no sign of slowing down. “If you only know him as the the guy who wrote ‘Wild Thing’ and ‘Angel of the Morn-ing” – you don’t know him! Chip Taylor is making some of the most distinctive acoustic music around today” (The New York Times). Taylor’s music is featured in the soundtrack of A Bread Factory, Patrick Wang’s two-part film inspired by, filmed at, and now playing at TSL! Tickets to Chip Taylor’s concert: $18 members / $15 students / $20 general.

Movie: A WHALE OF A TALEIn 2010, Taiji, a sleepy fishing town in Japan, suddenly found itself in the worldwide media spotlight. The Cove, a documentary denouncing the town’s longstanding whale and dolphin hunting traditions, won an Academy Award. Almost overnight, Taiji became a battleground for activists from around the world. Can a proud 400-year-old whaling tradition survive a tsunami of modern animal-rights activism and colliding forces of globalism vs. localism? A Whale of a Tale reveals the complex story behind the ongoing debate. Told through a wide range of characters including local fishermen, international activists, and an American journalist, this powerful documentary unearths a deep divide in Eastern and Western thought about nature and cultural sensitivity in the face of global activism. In English and Japanese with subtitles. 2018. 1h36m.

Movie: ANTONIO LOPEZ 1970: SEX FASHION & DISCOA documentary time capsule focusing on Paris and New York between 1969 and 1973 as viewed through the eyes of Antonio Lopez (1943-1987), the dominant fashion illustrator of the time. A native of Puerto Rico and raised in the Bronx, Antonio was a seductive arbiter of style and glamour who, beginning in the 1960s, brought elements of the urban street and ethnicity to bear on a postwar fashion world desperate for change and diversity. Counted among Antonio’s discoveries were unusual beauties such as Cathee Dahmen, Grace Jones, Pat Cleveland, Tina Chow, Jessica Lange, Jerry Hall, and Warhol Superstars Donna Jordan, Jane Forth, and Patti D’Arbanville. 2018. 1h35m.

Movie Series: INGMAR BERGMAN CENTENNIAL– THE MAGIC FLUTE: Bergman puts his indelible stamp on Mozart’s exqui-site opera in this sublime rendering of one of the composer’s best-loved works. In Swedish with subtitles. 1975. 2h15m.– CRIES AND WHISPERS: This existential drama revolves around two sisters, Karin (Ingrid Thulin) and Maria (Liv Ullmann), keeping vigil for a third, Agnes (Harriet Andersson), who is dying of cancer and who finds solace only in the arms of a beatific servant (Kari Sylwan). Winner of an Oscar for the color photography of Sven Nykvist. In Swedish with subtitles. 1972. 1h31m.

Movie: KING OF HEARTS [1966]During World War I, Scottish soldier Private Plumpick is sent on a mission to a French village to disarm a bomb set by the German army. He encounters a strange town occupied by the residents of the local psychiatric hospital who escaped after the villagers deserted. Assuming roles like Bishop, Duke, barber, and circus ringmaster, they warmly accept the visitor as their King of Hearts. With his bomb-defusing mission looming, Plumpick starts to prefer the accep-tance of the insane locals over the insanity of the war raging outside. Since its debut, King of Hearts has become a worldwide cult favorite and stands out as one of Philippe de Broca’s most memorable films. Fifty years after its original release, this satirical look at the absurdities of war is presented in a gorgeous new restoration. In English, French, and German with subtitles. 1966. 1h42m.

Movie: KUSAMA: INFINITYThe top-selling female artist in the world, Yayoi Kusama overcame impossible odds to bring her radical artistic vision to the world stage. Kusama was an underdog with everything stacked against her: the trauma of growing up in Japan during World War II, life in a dysfunctional family that discouraged her creativity, sexism and racism in the art establishment, mental illness in a cul-ture where that was particularly shameful, and even continuing to pursue her art full-time on the cusp of her 90s. In spite of it all, she has created a legacy that spans the disciplines of painting, sculpture, installation art, performance art, poetry, and literary fiction. 2018. 1h20m.

Movie: LIYANAUnder the guidance of acclaimed South African storyteller, Gcina Mhlophe, five orphaned children from Swaziland craft a collective fairytale drawn from their darkest memories and brightest dreams. Their fictional character, Liyana, is brought to life in innovative animated artwork as she embarks on a perilous quest to rescue her young twin brothers. As the children’s real and imagined worlds begin to converge, they must choose what kind of story they will tell. This genre-defying film weaves an original animated hero’s journey with poetic documentary scenes to create an inspiring tale of perseverance. The winner of more than 25 jury and audience awards and screened at more than 80 film festivals around the world. In English and siSwati with subtitles. 2018. 1h17m.

Movie: LIZZIEA psychological thriller that reveals many layers of the strange and fragile Lizzie Borden, who stood accused of the infamous 1892 axe murder of her family in Fall River, Massachusetts. An unmarried woman of 32 and a social outcast, Lizzie (Chloë Sevigny) lives a claustrophobic life under her father’s cold and domineering control. When Bridget Sullivan (Kristen Stewart), a young maid, comes to work for the family, Lizzie finds a sympathetic, kindred spirit, and a secret intimacy soon blossoms into a wicked plan. 2018. 1h46m.

Movie: LOVE, GILDAIn her own words, comedien Gilda Radner reflects on her life and career, including her time as an original cast member of Saturday Night Live and her marriage, later on, to Gene Wilder. Weaving together her recently discovered audiotapes, interviews with friends (Chevy Chase, Lorne Michaels, Laraine

Newman, Paul Shaffer, and Martin Short), rare home movies, and diaries read by modern-day comedians inspired by Gilda (Bill Hader, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, and Cecily Strong), Love, Gilda opens up a unique window into the honest and whimsical world of a beloved performer whose greatest role was sharing her story. 2018. 1h26m.

Movie: MOYNIHANDaniel Patrick Moynihan (1927-2003) did not just live in the twentieth century, he strode across it: a colossus of ideas and a man of deeds. He was an influential intellectual and sociologist, policy specialist, ambassador and long-serving senator. In an age of rigid ideologies, he was a man who embraced the contradictions and complexity of public policy without ever despairing of the role of government in the lives of its citizens. Fifteen years after his death, as the nation sinks further into hyper-partisanship and politics has become dominated by the frenzy of social media, the first feature length documentary about his life captures Moynihan as never before. 2018. 1h44m.

Baritone Zeljko Lucic is the vigilante sheriff Jack Rance, and Marco Armiliato conducts. Tickets $25 members / $15 students / $27.50 general. 3h25m / 2 intermissions.

National Theatre Live: FRANKENSTEIN [encore]Captured live in 2011 from the National Theatre stage in London, this thrilling, sold-out production became an international sensation, experienced by almost half a million people in cinemas around the world. Directed by Academy Award®-winner Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire), Franken-stein features Benedict Cumberbatch (Hamlet, BBC’s Sherlock) as the Crea-ture and Jonny Lee Miller (Elementary, Trainspotting) as Victor Frankenstein. Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’s bewildered creation is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Met with cruelty wherever he goes, the increasingly vengeful Creature determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal. Tickets $18 members / $15 students / $20 general. 2h15m.
