This folder should be given to a parent Monday after school, and returned empty to school Tuesday morning. If there is no school Monday, the folder will be sent home the following school day. The merit card is included in the Monday folder. Please make sure to look at your learner’s grade for the week and sign before returning it to your homeroom.

Terrific Timed Test-Math
Religion Ch. 1
Religion/SS: Sandland ELA: Silva STEM: Driscoll
Religion
Chapter 1’s key concepts are that
God loves and cares for all
creation, gave human beings a
special dignity, and has a plan for
the world. The children will also
learn how everything God wants
us to know about Him is revealed
in Sacred Scripture and the
Sacred Tradition of the Church.
Each week there is a test, learners
will be shown on the document
camera the chapter’s important
sentences to highlight and study.
Children can study starting on
Tuesday for this Friday’s Ch. 1 test.
Last week, learners had the
chance to choose a saint book to
read and use to present an oral
presentation to peers and parents
in October. Learners can choose a
book from another source, but the
book must be approved by me by
this Friday, Sept. 8. Presentation
guidelines were handed out last
week. Sign-Up Genius will be sent
out Monday, Labor Day.
Social Studies
We continue our California journey
by studying its location! Learners
will practice explaining California’s
location in relation to the North
and South Poles, Equator and
Prime meridian, neighboring
states, Pacific Ocean, and other
countries. Learners will practice
map reading skills- compass
directions, and latitude and
longitude for absolute location.
Reading
The learners are ready for reader’s
workshop and are excited to start
reading! They have been
practicing their active listening
skills and accountable talk during
several class read alouds,
beginning with What if Everybody
Did That? by Ellen Javernich. This
humorous book was used as a
guide for class discussions on
positive behavior. We extended
this lesson to brainstorm ideas for
a student created behavior matrix
for what it looks like to be
Respectful, Responsible, Safe, and
Kind in every school environment.
In preparation for the launching of
reader’s workshop, I will be
administering several
pre-assessments throughout the
week. These pre-assessments will
be used to guide instruction and
help learners choose their Just
Right Reading Books. The STAR
reading assessment will be given
during ELA on Thursday,
September 8. Learners will be
given a mint to help stimulate the
brain and sustain concentration.
Please let me know if this is an
issue for your learner.
Writing
Learners will be completing a
quick write on how they spent their
summer vacation this week. They
will be choosing a small moment
and writing long and strong about
it. We will also begin our grammar,
vocabulary practice, and word
study.
Math
Last week, learners began
weekly timed assessments.
Every Monday, learners test
and graph the result. On
Fridays, learners take the same
test and graph the new result.
The goal is to have at least 1
fact of growth during the week.
We also began putting our
SimSol Helpbook together.
This week we will continue to
work in chapter 1. We will be
working with standard form,
expanded form, and word form.
Learners will practice this skill
up to the hundred thousands
place. Also, we will be
reinforcing place and value
with the learners. Learners will
be practicing this skill up to the
the hundred thousands place.
Fact Fluency: Learners need to
practice their facts for 10
minutes daily. Check with your
learner to see which operation
they are practicing. Click here:
This is a great site for printing
timed tests for your learner. It
will help your learner increase
retention of facts as well as
decrease nerves when being
timed by practicing at home.
Science
We are continuing our unit on
the engineering design
process. We will be focusing on
careers and steps of the design
process.
