Free Bus Rides For Seniors Over Ho l idays

Seniors can ride fixed bus routes at no charge during the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority’s “Free Fare

Fridays” over the coming holiday season.

DAY TRIP—Wednesday, November 30th, 2016

DAYTRIP-WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 9TH, 2016 DESTINATION: HYANNIS- CAPE COD MARITIME MUSEUM

LUNCH -PORTSIDE TAVERN Cape Cod Maritime Museum -On a unique and compelling site on Hyannis Harbor, the Cape Cod Maritime Museum serves as a focal point for the Cape and Island’s maritime tradition. Boat building, cultural exhibits, maritime festivals, marine artifacts, shipwrecks, children’s programs and more flow in and out of the museum building on a year-round basis.

The museum has the largest scrimshaw collection on Cape Cod. The Cape Cod Maritime Museum in Hyannis, naturally overlooking Hyannis Harbor, boasts a vast gallery of history on such a vibrant element of Cape Cod’s structure. As you tour the museum, one finds themselves becoming absorbed in the mariner culture and what it’s like to live this lifestyle.

After our visit to the museum we will be having lunch at the Portside Tavern in Hyannis. Born and raised in New England, award-winning chef Michael Crowell-Hall is passionate about the region’s food. Mike has been in restaurant kitchens since he was twelve and says he was “blessed to work for top chefs in his teens and early twenties.” With years of experience in fine dining, he’s happy to be running a kitchen that focuses on the best of New England comfort food. There’s also a bit of Mediterranean influence in the meals Mike creates. He takes pride in the Portside Tavern’s “super-scratch” kitchen. He’s forged relationships with local fisheries and farms to turn out meals that showcase simple, fresh ingredients. Menus available at www.theportsidetavern.com. Items include soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers, pasta, pizza, etc..

Cost: Museum Admission–$5. Lunch at the cost of the diner. RESERVATIONS REQUIRED. Transportation is FREE! Space is limited. Call the COA at 508-945-5190 to register. Bus Departs the

COA at 9:45 am.

COA Library Corner

The COA staff wants to thank the donor of “Dark Tide” written by Stephen Puleo.

“Dark Tide” presents the non-fiction story of the fabled “Boston molasses flood of

January 15, 1919”. Many of our members growing up in the greater Boston area

considered this molasses flood a myth. We questioned how 2.5 million gallons of

molasses could be stored in a highly populated big city. Indeed, many of us

questioned if this flood really occurred, was it just a joke. Well the flood did occur; it was

not a joke; it was a tragic event that killed 21 people and injured 150 people. Author

Puleo presents this history in this very readable book.

Do you need a smoke alarm, carbon monoxide detector or batteries?

Did you know bed shaker alarms are available for the hearing

impaired? Do you need assistance changing the batteries or installing

new alarms?

We would be happy to assist you with this matter, call 508-945-5190.

Your safety is of the utmost importance to us!!

HEALTH TIPS – DRIVING AT NIGHT - Mayo Clinic Health Letter 8/16

As days grow shorter and nights grow longer, it pays to be attentive when getting behind the wheel, especially after dark. Age-related changes to your vision and eye diseases such as cataracts can make it more difficult to see clearly at night. You may have trouble reading road signs, adapting to glare from headlights, or correctly judging distances and speed of other vehicles.

There are general measures you can take to help you drive safely at night, as well as specific precautions when you get behind the wheel. In general:

Stay current with eye exams.

Wear glasses that are anti-reflective and don’t obstruct your peripheral vision.

Check with your doctor about side effects of any medications you may be taking that might affect your driving abilities.

Keep your windshield and headlights clean. Ask your mechanic to make sure your headlights are aimed correctly.

Don’t drive if you feel impaired or sleepy.

Take a driving course. Even experienced drivers can benefit from a refresher now and then.

Take Precautions such as:

Slow down so that you have time to react and stop if needed.

Minimize distractions, such as fiddling with the radio, eating, or drinking.

Stay alert to the road and other drivers.

Pull over if you need to check directions, make a call, send a text, or just need a break or a nap, especially on long trips.

Daylight Savings Time ends November 6th. Mark your calendars and be prepared.

Have a safe Autumn and Winter. Dee Yeater RN

NAUSET NEIGHBORS OUTREACH MEETING Chatham COA, November 16th at 10:30 am L ight Refreshments wi l l be served

Nauset Neighbors is a nonprofit all-volunteer organization that helps seniors remain in their homes and community as they age. With a single call, members can receive assistance with rides, friendly visit, handyman services, technology help and other support. Our volunteers offer a service that helps with the necessities of life, as well as providing trips to the library or senior center. We are asking for volunteers from the Chatham area. We can only help seniors if we have enough

volunteers from the community to support us. Members pay a small flat rate fee of $75/year for a single member or $95/year for a household, which can be waived if it presents an obstacle to joining. If you are interested in helping your neighbors, could use help yourself, or want to learn more, please come to our outreach meeting at the Chatham COA on November 16th at 10:30 am. Come and hear all the ways you might help others or all the ways we might help you. Transportation Available. RSVP to 508-945-5190

From The Directors Desk…Did You Know?

There are many food resources available to the Chatham community and the COA can help!

Chatham Council on Aging-Pantry to People: The Pantry to People program involves CCOA coordination of volunteers and transportation to pick up custom packed grocery bags at the FPOCC and deliver them to resident’s homes.

Lower Cape Outreach Council-Food Pantry: The Chatham Food Pantry (CFP) at St. Christopher’s church is one of eight food pantries of the LCOC. CFP is available to eligible Chatham residents every 2 weeks. LCOC does the program registration; CCOA provides transportation by appointment.

Lower Cape Outreach Council-Surplus Food Program: Supplemental groceries to eligible recipients.. The CCOA coordinates volunteers to bring the food to Chatham for local distribution.

Lower Cape Outreach Council-Thanksgiving: LCOC works with other service organizations to provide Thanksgiving fixings and 20 day packs of food to households from Harwich to Provincetown. CCOA coordinates transportation and volunteers to pick up and distribute the food in Chatham.

Family Pantry of Cape Cod-Food Pantry: Food distribution is their primary program to provide food to anyone in need with no geographic restrictions. Clients have a confidential interview on their first visit and then are entitled to shop for food every 3 weeks.

Family Pantry of Cape Cod-Healthy Food To Go Mobile Pantry: Food distributions are held at CCOA every third Wednesday of the month, 12:00-2pm. This program is intended to serve the Chatham COA patron who would like access to nutritious food; yet, struggles to make it to the Family Pantry of Cape Cod, located at 133 Queen Anne Road in Harwich.

Family Pantry of Cape Cod-Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Plan (SNAP): This was formerly known as Food Stamps. FPOCC has volunteers trained to apply for SNAP assistance for clients through an online program. This is an ancillary service and helps clients to have the ability to purchase other foods that may not be available at FPOCC.
