Fellow Rotarians, Thank you for your attention today during the 4 - way speech contest. We have four contestants, all from either Richardson High School, or JJ Pearce High School. They are the best of our preliminary round held last Thursday evening at Richardson City Hall. These finalists are trying to earn a chance to compete at the Rotary district level in a couple of weeks. Because of their effort and the effort of their teachers, Ms. Nona Killgore of JJ Pearce and Ms. Monica Simonds of Richardson High School, the Club will present a check for $100 to each school for their use in their debate programs. We will also award the students a stipend for their use in continuing their education in the following amounts: 1st Place $300 2nd Place $200 3rd Place $100 4th Place $ 75 I would like to Thank Tim Quilici for timing the 5-7 minutes speeches today, along with our judges: New member Todd Tramente, Matt Marchbanks, Shelley Hickey and Steve Bensen. Robbie Hazelbaker has had the privilege of coordinating this event for the second year in a row. Please sit back and enjoy hearing from Richardson's finest. A MESSAGE FROM CLUB PRESIDENT BARRY KRAUSE

Today we are having our Club’s annual 4-Way Test Speech Contest and are honored to welcome students and teachers from JJ Pearce and Richardson High Schools. Last Thursday evening Robbie Hazelbaker and judges Shelley Hickey, Steve Benson, Matt Marchbanks and Todd Tramonte listened to speeches by the High School students. The top four speakers were invited to speak at our meeting today. The top speaker today will be invited to attend and compete at our Rotary District 5810 4-Way Speech Contest later this month. In the past our Club has been well represented at District by our winning speaker and this year will be no exception based on the performances last Thursday. It is truly an honor to have these young people join us today and speak on the things we Rotarians think, say and do. Thanks to Robbie and the judges for their good work in putting together this program. It should be noted that our Club will again donate $100 each to Richardson High School and JJ Pearce High School for the benefit of the speech programs.

“THE FUTURE OF ROTARY IS IN YOUR HANDS”

CLUB MEMBERSHIP – BONNIE PERRY

We are so pleased to announce two new members for our Club. They will be inducted this month. Please welcome Miguel Marrero and Todd Tramonte. Miguel, sponsored by Courtenay Tanner, is on the faculty at Richland College, and Todd, sponsored by Robbie Hazelbaker, is a broker with Assist 2 Sell Realty. Please welcome our newest members! Let's each one think about someone that we would like to invite as a prospective member and bring them to a meeting soon as a guest of the Club. Let's grow our membership and at the same time give our friends and colleagues an opportunity to join a wonderful Rotary Club.

HISTORY OF THE 4 - WAY TEST & SPEECH CONTEST – BARRY YOUNG

From the earliest days of the organization, Rotarians were concerned with promoting high ethical standards in their professional lives. One of the world's most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics is The 4-Way Test, which was created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor (who later served as RI president) when he was asked to take charge of a company that was facing bankruptcy. This 24-word test for employees to follow in their business and professional lives became the guide for sales, production, advertising, and all relations with dealers and customers, and the survival of the company is credited to this simple philosophy. Adopted by Rotary in 1943, The 4-Way Test has been translated into more than a hundred languages and published in thousands of ways. It asks the following four questions:

"Of The Things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the Truth? 2. Is it Fair to All Concerned? 3. Will it Build Goodwill and Better Friendships? 4. Will it be Beneficial to All Concerned?” For five decades Rotarians have been using The 4-Way Test as a practical yardstick in their business, community, and personal affairs. The 4-Way Test, you will note, does not provide answers. It asks questions which the user must answer. Thousands of Rotarians have used it and shared it with others. Millions of copies have been distributed to students and business associates. The Test has been carved into granite monuments, displayed on billboards, written into labor contracts, printed on wrapping paper and umbrellas, and has been the theme of countless essay and speech contests.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL NEWS

A free health camp in New Delhi helped set the stage for India’s 10 January National Immunization Day (NID). Organized on 7 January by the Rotary Club of Delhi South Metropolitan, Delhi, with support from the India PolioPlus Committee, the camp provided underprivileged residents with checkups, consultations, and information on a wide range of health issues. Health camps are often held before NIDs in India to encourage people to participate in polio immunization activities. Rajashree Birla, an honorary member of the Rotary clubs of Bombay and Mulund, Maharashtra, joined Lakshmi Mittal, who leads ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steelmaker, and his wife, Usha, in inaugurating the New Delhi camp. Birla and the Mittals are major contributors to Rotary’s US$200 Million Challenge. “It is the conscience of corporate families like them who inspire people to give so that the vulnerable and underserved can fare better in their lives,” said Past RI President Rajendra K. Saboo. “The global fight against polio is being fought mainly in four countries, which include India,” said RI President-nominee Kalyan Banerjee. “It is a responsibility that we all share and at this stage must be addressed with urgency and utmost sincerity, so that children in India, mainly in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, are saved from falling prey to polio.”
