MONDAY NEWS
Monday News page 2 of 2 P R O G R A M Jean Cation introduced our speaker Yeva Gasparyan, a foreign exchange student from Vayk, Armenia. She is a junior at Westerville N. High School and living with Cation’s son and daughter in-‐law in Westerville. Yeva started her power point with the first slide “Welcome to Sunny Armenia” shown above. She is from a small town in the mountains with a population of 4,000 people. The elevation of the town is around 4300’ above sea level. In looking at the map of Armenia it represents a side view of a girl. Their country is rich in Christian history. Their country’s population totals 3 million people with and additional 10 million people living throughout the world. Their country is of comparable land area to the state of Maine in the United States. The countries of Turkey, Iran, Azerbaijan, and Georgia surround them. At one time they were a part of Russia. Their flag is a tri-‐color, red, blue & orange horizontal striped flag. Red recalls the blood shed for liberty; Blue stands for the hope of Armenia to live under peaceful skies, Orange stands for the creative talent and hard-‐working nature of the people of Armenia. Ararat is the highest mountain in the Armenian Highlands and usually is covered with snow. Ararat is the mountain range where Noah’s Ark landed. Yerevan is the capital of Armenia. It is the largest city in Armenia and one of the oldest in the world at 2,798 years. After 9:00 pm there is singing and dancing in the town’s public square. Some famous Armenians are: Cher, SOAD, Kirk Kerkorian owner of Metro Goldwyn Mayer, and Kim Kardashyan. Our money is the Dram consisting of coins and paper bills. The paper bills contain pictures of famous people. The US $1 is worth 476.49 Dram. Christopher Ter-‐Serobyan an Armenian inventor developed the green color ink used to print the US bills that cannot be copied or counterfeited. There are 39 letters in our alphabet compared to 26 in your alphabet. Our last names end with the letters “yan”. Armenians are known for their large noses. Armenia religion is Christian. The church is the Armenian Apostolic Church. In 301 AD Armenia became the first Christian country. Yeva gave a short lesson in speaking Armenian. Such as Hello is ‘Barev”, Goodbye is “Hajoghutyun”, Yes is “Ayo”, No is “Voch, Thank you is “Shnorhakalutyun”, You are Welcome is “Khndrem”, I Love You is “Sirum Em Kez”, and How are you? Is Vonts es?” Yeva showed some pictures of her and her friends on the “Wings Of Tatev”. The longest cable car ropeway in the world. The system is 5.7 km (3.5 mi) long. I was impressed with the straight road below or should I say a few sections of straight roads. They remember the Armenian Genocide date of April 24, 1915 when Turkey killed 1.5 million people in Armenia. A memorial was built to honor those killed. Glendale California is known as Little Armenia with a high concentration of Armenians. One of the slides shows a street sign reading “Little Armenia” directing people to that area.
Lake Sevan is the largest lake in Armenia and one of the largest high altitude fresh water lakes in Europe. A wine festival is held in the Areni village each year. You can taste some of the best wines produced in Armenia made from grapes and pomegranate. These wines are highly valued by European consumers. The slides show a lot of stomping of the grapes. Yeva showed a slide of two Armenian Dishes Ghapama and Tolma/Dolama. To me the Ghapama looks like a pumpkin stuffed with rice and fruit mixture and baked before eating. The Tolma/Dolama looks like our stuffed cabbage rolls and stuffed peppers. ? ? ? ? ? ? ’ s
1. What is your second language? When we were part of Russia it was Russian now it is English.
2. What surprised you about America? The lines and shopping with family.
3. What do you think of our elections? Funny and interesting. I appreciated your voting and its funny how some talk about going to Canada, if their candidate did not win. In Armenia we have many, many political parties.
4. What career do you want to pursue? My mother would like me to be a dentist, because that’s what she wanted to be. She is a math teacher; most of our family are teachers. I am not sure what I want to do.
