1. Thank you from Misti Postte for our sponsorship of Rachel’s Challenge held at the Granville Middle School. The Challenge is:
• Look for the Best in others. • Dream Big. • Choose Positive Influences. • Speak with Kindness. • Start your own Chain Reaction.
There is a club formed at the GMS to promote this Challenge.
2. Thank you, from Bobby Vahalik and the GRD for our work of painting and sprucing up the interior of the McPeek Lodge as a part of the United Way Week of Caring. The following members participated: Butch Curtis, Charlene Lossing, Jerry Miller, Lesa Miller, Diane Preston, and Dave Thomas. I believe there was at least one more, but I didn’t catch the name.
3. A letter from Bev DaHaven, Joe Ciricosta’s daughter, in regard to our plan to plant Sugar Maple Trees at the Granville Elementary School. She would like to honor her parents by sponsoring a tree in their name. Her mother, Bernice, taught second grade and reading for many years at the elementary school. She related Charlie Morris was Joe’s sponsor when he joined Kiwanis. Bob Mason, a Kiwanian and guidance counselor at the school was a very good friend of Joe and Bernice.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
• Jen Lewis mentioned this is the seventh year we have sponsored the 5K races. A couple of changes this year: It will be a 5K/10K race and a new course will be laid out which will keep the runners off Loudon Street and keep them on school property and Burg St. We will set up at the Intermediate School on Friday Oct. 2nd at 7:00 PM. We will assemble at 6:45 AM on Saturday and registration will begin at 7:00 or when the first runners show up. Publicity – we will have a sign at the barn, a spot on the radio, information at our web site, and put out some signs. We need 20 – 30 volunteers to complete this project. A sign up sheet was circulated at the meeting. I am guessing about eight (8) signed up for Saturday and six (6) for Friday.
• Thom Mckee will be “chilin out” with his famous secret recipe chili on Saturday. So after the 5k/10k race you can stop by the Inn or College Town House lawns and vote for the best chili in Kiwanis and the community of Granville.
• Tim LePontois mention we will be setting up the tent, chairs and tables this weekend. There will probably be about three (3) more weeks to the end of the Tent rental season.
• Kevin Hampton mentioned the roadside pick up will be Oct. 12th (Mon.). We will meet at the barn at 4:00 PM. A meeting will follow at the barn around 6:15 with a smorgasbord of pizza (free of course).
• Jerry Miller mentioned the Westerville Kiwanis Club Golf Outing will be Oct. 12th (Mon.) at the Raccoon International Golf Course in Granville. Registration dead line is Oct. 7th (Wed.) The cost is $55 per person or $220 per foursome.
• Jen Lewis mentioned four (4) of our members will attend the Cleveland Kiwanis Club celebration of their 100th anniversary on Oct. 17, 2015 at the Western Reserve Historical Society, 10825 East Blvd Cleveland, OH. For additional information visit their web site www.kiwaniscleveland.org or contact Pat Collier at (216) 581-‐7479 or [email protected]

PROGRAM Deborah “Deb” Tegtmeyer Executive Director of the Licking County Coalition for Housing. Deb mentioned how much the Granville area is involved with the Licking County Coalition of Housing, including Roger Lossing and Bill Acklin. Roger is treasurer and Bill participates in the VITA program. She also complimented us on our club activities. Licking County Coalition for Housing was formed in 1992 and obtained its 501c3 classification in 1993. The purpose of LCCH is to provide a community forum, to assess housing resources, to identify problems, and to create solutions through collaboration. The LCCH was formed locally to serve this area. It is not an organization created by the State or Federal governments. Thus any funds raised locally stay in the Licking County area. They started with four (4) homes and now they have forty-‐ four (44) homes in which they can assist homeless families. The homes are located in different areas of Newark. They own fourteen (14) of these homes and lease four (4) others. I am guessing the other twenty-‐six (26) homes have some sort of agreement with the LCCH and the owners of the homes. If there was an explanation I didn’t hear it. They also work with the St. Vincent’s Haven Shelter for homeless men and the Salvation Army for homeless families; these are on a short time basis. In transitional homes the families receive counseling on ways to get a job, finances, solve addictions, money management, etc. The families can stay in the homes for two years. After this time it is expected they will be living on their own without LCCH assistance. The problems now are that it is difficult to find rental homes. A lot of this was created in the housing market crash when people decided they wanted to rent a home instead of owning a home, either they could not afford it or just didn’t want to. It is a problem to get families into a home because there are not enough resources, which are spread too thin. They provide free income tax preparation for families in need. This is the VITA program (volunteers in tax assistance). Last year with 25 volunteers, families were able to get a million dollars in refunds through direct refunds or Earned Income Tax Credits. The families also receive training in better management of their funds and finances. These volunteers can put in four (4) hours per week in assisting in preparation of tax forms. All volunteers receive training, to assure they are qualified to assist in preparation of the tax forms. They have received a grant from the VA to assist helping homeless veterans. There are 15,000 – 17,000 veterans in our community; the VA has just approved the renewal of this grant. They work with the Veterans Service Commission located in Newark at 935 Buckeye Ave. The person they work with is Michael Holmes. Take note Don, Deb suggested Michael would make a good speaker for one of our club meetings. The Veteran’s Service Commission phone number is (740) 670-‐5430. With the grants they are able to provide assistance to ninety (90) households. The Veterans Service Commission receives
referrals from Licking, Knox, and Coshocton Counties. They are involved with singles and family veterans. They are also working with Nancy Neely, the retiring; superintendent of the Licking County Board of Developmental Disabilities to provide assistance to mentally and physically impaired people. They have twelve homes two (2) in Heath and ten (10) in Newark. Each home will provide living facilities for four (4) people. This gives people an opportunity to live independently. They have two fundraisers planned. The first is a 5k Run at the Rotary Park Pavilion in Newark on November 7, 2015. The second is a golf outing next year June 18, 2016 at the Licking Springs Public Golf Course (formally the Trout Club) on Horns Hill Rd. in Newark. This is happening on Saturday Oct. 3rd
