MONDAY MORNING

Miller Gallery ushers in new show featuring works of Mississippi College professorMississippi College Art Professor Carrie Reeves will take the MCC Miller Art Gallery spotlights when Reeve’s works are highlighted as the next show at the gallery.

An opening reception is set for Tuesday, Nov. 14, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The campus community is encouraged to attend. The show is to be on display though Jan. 29, 2017.

In her artist’s statement, Reeves said creativity with the hands is uniquely human. “Through my art I aspire to speak to the viewer concerning the major and minor themes of human experience: joy and sorrow, meekness and anger, peace and fear, light and dark, memory and loss, hope and defeat, life and death. I believe that where there is bad, there will ultimately be good. As a Christian artist, I seek to create with this underlying message of hope and beauty,” she said.

She added her figurative artwork uses the emotive quality of the human figure to speak to the viewer. “I enjoy capturing emotion in the faces of my figurative subjects as well as in the placement of hands and through body language. My non-figurative artwork focuses on the beauty of creation. Geometric and organic design is found throughout nature from the smallest particles to the largest complexes, and inspires the landscape and still life subjects of my non-figurative work.”

The gallery is open Monday through Thursday, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. For more information, contact John Marshall, MCC art

Sculptures and paintings by Carrie Reeves, a professor of art at Mississippi College, will be on display at the Miller Art Gallery beginning Tuesday, Nov. 14.

Arts & Letters’ production of ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ opens ThursdayBased on the Victor Hugo novel and songs from the Disney animated feature, MCC’s Arts & Letters Series will present The Hunchback of Notre Dame Thursday through Sunday, Nov. 16-19, in the Ivy Hall McCain Theater.

Curtain is a 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 16, through Saturday, Nov. 18, and on Sunday, Nov. 20, the matinee begins at 2 o’clock.

With its sweeping score and powerful story, this musical comes to life and begins when the bells of Notre Dame sound through the famed cathedral in 15th century Paris. Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer who longs to be “Out There,” observes all of Paris reveling in the Feast of Fools. Held captive by his devious caretaker, the archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo, Quasimodo escapes for the day and joins the boisterous crowd, only to be treated cruelly by all but the beautiful gypsy, Esmeralda. Quasimodo isn’t the only one captivated by her free spirit, though – the handsome Captain Phoebus and Frollo are equally enthralled. As the three vie for her attention, Frollo embarks on a mission to destroy the gypsies and it’s up to Quasimodo to save them all.

Tickets are $10, adults, $5, children, and may be purchased by calling The MCC Foundation office at 601-484-8696.

Cast members of The Hunchback of Notre Dame pose before Thursday’s opening.
