FARM INNOVATES WITH ONLINE VIDEOSBy Ron Mitchell

Taylor Made Sales Agency has always been on the leading edge of new concepts and technol-

ogy to enhance the sales experience. So its latest innovation—providing videos that

replicate the inspection process—is not surprising.Taylor Made's "Walk This Way" videos were first

unveiled at last year's Fasig-Tipton July sale and enhanced in subsequent auctions. Available at tmsaecatalog.com, footage includes a handler at the sale grounds holding a horse for the traditional conformation pose, and then walking the horse.

The videos, which embody the same experience potential buyers get when they inspect the horse in person, is available for all Taylor Made horses at the Fasig-Tipton winter mixed sale.

Taylor Made's Mark Taylor said the service, for which sellers are not charged an additional fee, is an extension of the videos and photos of some 500 hors-es Taylor Made takes monthly and sends to clients.

"It's a value-added service for doing business with Taylor Made. We just think by doing this we are selling more horses for our customers." BH

BANNER DAY FOR MEDAGLIA D'OROBy Myra Lewyn

Songbird's smashing 3-year-old debut in the Las Virgenes (gr. II) Feb. 6 at Santa Anita Park start-

ed a notable day for sire Medaglia d'Oro.Less than an hour after her runaway win, Dar-

ley's Central Kentucky sire got the exacta in the Donn (gr. I) at Gulfstream Park: winner Mshawish and runner-up Valid.

Songbird, 2015's champion juvenile filly—now unbeaten in five starts—is a leading contender for the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I). Medaglia d'Oro's Rachel Alexandra won the 2009 Kentucky Oaks en route to Horse of the Year honors.

Mshawish, a grade I winner on turf, showcased his versatility with his grade I dirt victory and stamped himself a candidate for the Dubai World Cup (UAE-I), a race in which his sire finished sec-ond in 2004. Valid earned his first grade I placing.

Medaglia d'Oro was second among North America's general sires in 2015, getting 28 stakes winners worldwide—23 in black-type races—and the earners of more than $13 million.

Saturday's performers moved him into second on the 2016 list, with $1,083,483.

Medaglia d'Oro stands at a fee of $150,000 in the upcoming breeding season, up from $125,000 in 2015. BH

KOBE'S BACK FINDS JUST ENOUGHBy Jeremy Balan

Even with blinkers for the first time in his career, Kobe's Back did what he does

seemingly every time in the Palos Verdes Stakes (gr. II) Feb. 7 at Santa Anita Park.

As is customary for the Flatter horse, owned by C R K Stable and trained by Peter Eurton, he broke slowly and was as many as 10 1/2 lengths back early in the six-furlong race.

But the 5-year-old found just enough late under jockey Gary Stevens to edge fellow graded winner Salutos Amigos in the final strides.

The victory broke a five-race winless streak for Kobe's Back, dating back to his score in the Commonwealth Stakes (gr. III) at Keeneland in April.

Eurton said after the race that the gray had been invited to participate in the upcoming Dubai Golden

Shaheen (UAE-I) March 26 at Meydan."We're going to discuss it and enjoy this, because

it doesn't happen very often, and go from there," Eurton said. BH

STORMDRIVER SURPRISES IN LOUISIANA FEATUREBy Alastair Bull

Stormdriver produced a minor upset on one of the biggest nights for Louisi-

ana-breds Feb. 6 when he came from off the pace to win the Premier Night Champion-ship at Delta Downs.

Starting at 6-1, Stormdriver (Discreet Cat) took advantage after 3-5 favorite The Pickett Factor (Gold Tribute) got into an early speed duel, rallying from fourth to outfinish last year's winner One King's Man (K One King) and The Pickett Factor.

The victory took the 6-year-old's earnings to $451,677.

Earlier, Heitai (Fusaichi Pegasus) won the Premier Night Sprint for the third consecu-tive year.

The night was also a good one for sons of Yan-kee Gentleman (Storm Cat). Icy Gentleman won the seven-furlong Night Prince for 3-year-olds, and Witch Hunt won the Ragin Cajun over five furlongs. Yankee Gentleman stands for $3,500 at

GROWING THE FARM BRANDBy Eric Mitchell

Taylor Made Stallions is getting a taste of what a star athlete's magnetism can do for

a sports franchise.The family-owned stallion and commercial

sales operation near Nicholasville, Ky. bought a 30% interest in such a star: dual classic winner California Chrome, back in July. When the 5-year-old son of Lucky Pulpit had a sever-al-month layover at the farm before resuming his racing career, the phone rang constantly.

"We've had some popular horses on our farm—Unbridled's Song or Saint Liam—but one thing I've never experienced before that we are seeing with this horse is the popularity among fans," said Taylor Made president Duncan Taylor.

The fan fervor has pushed Taylor Made into an entirely new side business it had not contem-plated before–selling branded merchandise.

To accommodate the many fan requests to see California Chrome during his Taylor Made layover last fall, the farm set up three consec-utive Fan Days in late September. The farm as-sumed that fans would want a keepsake from the event and sold California Chrome-branded T-shirts and coffee cups. Fans bought more than $14,000 in merchandise during those Fan Days and launched an entirely new side busi-ness for Taylor Made.

"The merchandise was way more successful than anyone had predicted," said Laura Don-nell, Taylor Made's public relations director.

Now the farm has an online store with a great-er variety of goods—caps, hooded sweatshirts, key chains, women's wear, kids' apparel, and insulated drink holders. Calendars are the store's bestseller.

California Chrome's draw has allowed Taylor Made to start spreading its own brand among racing fans. In the past the farm created brand-ed caps and jackets only for employees and as gifts for clients.

"You couldn't buy our stallion hats and jack-ets before," Donnell said. "Now people come tour the farm and learn about who we are; then they want to be a part of it. Certainly with-out California Chrome in the store, we wouldn't be doing this, so it is neat to start seeing the transition to our apparel."

Horses with widespread appeal such as Cali-fornia Chrome, American Pharoah, Zenyatta, or Rachel Alexandra don't come along often, but there is a lesson here for Central Kentucky farms participating in the new Horse Country farm tour network: Don't forget the branded merchandise.

"It is more likely (for fans) to develop a passion for the team and then identify with a player," said Kirk Wakefield, professor of retail marketing at Baylor University. "Based on that, they then buy merchandise to demonstrate their identity with the team and player, which says something to others about who they are." BH
