Essential Question

How are relationships between components on a scatter-plot graph determined?

What is a “line of best fit” or a “trend line”?

SC-H-MF-U-2Students will understand that the usefulness of a model can be tested by comparing its predictions to actual observations in the real world. But a close match does not necessarily mean that the model is the only “true” model or the only one that would work.

Regression

Relationships are mathematical descriptions of the comparability of data.

On graphs there are four basic types.

The shape or appearance of the data gives hints as to the algebraic formula needed to model the data.

Circle Lab relationship

The circle lab data indicates that circumference and diameter are a direct proportion…therefore a linear function model

C

D

Using a straight edge, draw a line through the points

Use the line to make the regression equation

Linear function isy = mx + b

Start by finding the slope, mm = y2 – y1 / x2 – x1

x2x1

What was your slope?

Replace the y and x with the units on each axis
