Dear Sir and Brother I am very pleased to announce for the Regular Lodge meeting, on September 9th 2019 , our Lodge has been granted the privilege to host and receive a presentation of United Grand Lodge of England Prestonian Lecture for 2019.

The prestigious Prestonian Lecture is the only lecture given under the authority of the United Grand Lodge of England. William Preston (1742-1818), the foremost Masonic educator of his time, left a legacy to provide for an Annual Lectureship. Many great and learned Freemasons have been given this high honour, with lectures recorded in the Grand Lodge of England Masonic Year Book.

The 2019 Prestonian Lecture titled “English Freemasonry During the Great War” is given by W Bro Michael Karn, PAGSwdB

W.Bro. Mike is well known in Middlesex and was their Provincial Grand Orator, a member of QC Lodge 2076 and Temple of Athene Lodge 9541, and currently the Royal Arch Third Provincial Grand Principal of Middlesex, was recently appointed by the United Grand Lodge of England as Prestonian Lecturer for 2019.

When Britain declared war on Germany on 4 August 1914, Freemasonry in England faced unprecedented circumstances. UGLE for the first time had to contend with the impact of a global war.

English Masonic Lodges continued to meet during the war years and the lecture and accompanying booklet account the way Freemasonry and many Lodges reacted to the conflict. Much of the information having been researched from individual Lodge Histories and Minute Books.

The lecture includes: Masonic relations with Germany before the war; Freemasons 'called to the colours'; Masonic reaction to the declaration of war; How Lodges reacted to the war years; A Victoria Cross; Brethren of enemy countries; German Lodges in England; Prisoner of war camps; The war at sea; German air attacks.
