Hike

Yesterday the camp went on its much anticipated hike. Despite a false start with Arhips bid for the pipeline, we were soon following Serge upriver into the land that horticulture forgot. With unpredictable depths and treacherous mud all around we persevered with only a minumum of casualties. All those socks will be missed.

All those that went on the hike were quite surprised to see a conveniently placed metal ladder at the toughest part. Perhaps the Bunnings Warehouse fairy was about, or perhaps it was the remains of a previous hiking expedition that didnt make it.

I guess we’ll never know.

DID YOU KNOW?

Sudoku has more than 81 squares (9 x 9). You have for example bigger squares of which there are 9 of, not to mention the one big square that presents the outline.

The method of counting all the squares is very simple. You first times 9 by 9 to get the number of smallest squares, you then add (8 x 8) to it to get the number of squares that are 2 by 2 small squares etc... until you add (1 x 1) which is the biggest square going 9 small squares across.

Dear Scouts, If you have ever seen the play Peter Pan you will remember how the pirate chief was always making his dying speech because he was afraid that possibly when the time came for him to die he might not have time to get it off his chest. It is much the same with me, and so, although I am not at this moment dying, I shall be doing so one of these days and I want to send you a parting word of good-bye.

Remember, it is the last you will ever hear from me, so think it over.I have had a most happy life and I want each one of you to have as happy a life too.I believe that God put us in this jolly world to be happy and enjoy life. Happiness doesn’t come from being rich, nor merely from being successful in your career, nor by self-indulgence. One step towards happiness is to make yourself healthy and strong while you are a boy, so that you can be useful and so can enjoy life when you are a man.

Nature study will show you how full of beautiful and wonderful things God has made the world for you to enjoy. Be contented with what you have got and make the best of it.

Look on the bright side of things instead of the gloomy one.

But the real way to get happiness is by giving out happiness to other people. Letter from Camp

If you think our camp has certain flaws, may we direct your attention to a letter written by a boy at another camp? We believe this will put everything in perspective:

Dear Mum & Dad, Our Scoutmaster told us to write to our parents in case you saw the flood on TV and are worried. We are okay. Only one of our tents and 2 sleeping bags got washed away. Luckily, none of us got drowned because we were all up on the mountain looking for Billy when it happened.

Oh yes, please call Billy’s mother and tell her he is okay. He can’t write because of the cast. I got to ride in one of the search and rescue jeeps. It was neat. We never would have found Billy in the dark if it hadn’t been for the lightning.

Scoutmaster Keith got mad at Billy for going on a hike alone without telling anyone. Billy said he did tell him, but it was during the fire so he probably didn’t hear him. Did you know that if you put gas on a fire, the gas will blow up?

The wet wood didn’t burn, but one of the tents did and also some of our clothes. Matthew is going to look weird until his hair grows back.

We will be home on Saturday if Scoutmaster Keith gets the bus fixed. It wasn’t his fault about the wreck. The brakes worked okay when we left. Scoutmaster Keith said that with a bus that old you have to expect something to break down; that’s probably why he can’t get insurance.

We think it’s a neat bus. He doesn’t care if we get it dirty and if it’s hot, sometimes he lets us ride on the fenders. It gets pretty hot with 45 people in a bus made for 24. He let us take turns riding in the trailer until the highway patrol man stopped and talked to us.

Scoutmaster Keith is a neat guy. Don’t worry, he is a good driver. In fact, he is teaching Jessie how to drive on the mountain roads where there isn’t any cops. All we ever see up there are logging trucks.

This morning all of the guys were diving off the rocks and swimming out to the rapids. Scoutmaster Keith wouldn’t let me because I can’t swim, and Billy was afraid he would sink because of his cast, it’s concrete because we didn’t have any plaster, so he let us take the canoe out. It was great. You can still see some of the trees under the water from the flood.

Scoutmaster Keith isn’t crabby like some scoutmasters. He didn’t even get mad about the life jackets. He has to spend a lot of time working on the bus so we are trying not to cause him any trouble.

Guess what? We have all passed our first aid merit badges. When Andrew dived into the lake and cut his arm, we got to see how a tourniquet works.

Steven and I threw up, but Scoutmaster Keith said it probably was just food poisoning from the leftover chicken. He said they got sick that way with food they ate in prison. I’m so glad he got out and became our scoutmaster. He said he

A guide, wanting to earn some money, decided to hire herself out as a handyman-type and started canvassing a wealthy neighborhood. She went to the front door of the first house and asked the owner if he had any jobs for her to do.

“Well, you can paint my porch. How much will you charge?”

The guide said, “How about 50 dollars?” The man agreed and told her that the paint and ladders that she might need were in the garage. The man’s wife, inside the house, heard the conversation and said to her husband, “Does she realize that the porch goes all the way around the house?”

The man replied, “She should. She was standing on the porch.”

A short time later, the guide came to the door to collect her money.

“You’re finished already?” he asked. “Yes,” the guide answered, “and I had paint left over, so I gave it two coats. “Impressed, the man reached in his pocket for the $50. “And by the way,” the guide added, “that’s not a Porch, it’s a Ferrari.”
