“I want to be alone!” I yelled. There was a hurt look on my six-year-old brother’s face as he left the room. I returned to my studies. He never understood that I needed privacy. No matter where I went, he was always there, and this time I lost my temper.

A few weeks later, our lives were transformed. My parents received an invitation to join a marine biology study in the Carribbean, thousands of miles from our New York City apartment. We talked it over and decided the change would be good for us all. My brother would leave with them to the Cayman Islands.
