AbOUT THE PROGRAM
This education program is designed to immerse secondary art students in the theory and practice of readymade art. In the morning MUMA Director Charlotte Day will lead a guided tour of the exhibition Reinventing the Wheel: The Readymade Century and introduce work by major twentieth century artists. In the afternoon, students will explore the influence of the readymade on contemporary art, working with acclaimed Melbourne artist Masato Takasaka. Students will learn how Masato uses found objects in his installations and create a “mini-city” of their own during a hands-on workshop in MUMA’s education space.
Recommended for year 10 & 11 students
AbOUT THE EXHIbITION
REINVENTING THE WHEEl: THE READYMADE CENTURY
One hundred years ago, Marcel Duchamp sent shockwaves through the art world with one devastatingly simple work: an inverted bicycle wheel. Giving birth to a new artistic language – the readymade – Duchamp’s conversion of an everyday object into high art completely inverted how people considered artistic practice. Suddenly art was capable of being everywhere and in everything.
Reinventing the Wheel: The Readymade Century pays tribute to a century of readymade art. Bringing together over 50 works from major international figures including Duchamp, Man Ray, Oppenheim, Rauchenberg, and Warhol – along with more recent work by Australian contemporary artists including Lou Hubbard, Rosslynd Piggott, Ricky Swallow, John Nixon, Charlie Sofo and Masato Takasaka to explore the many trajectories of the readymade.

AbOUT THE ARTIST
MASATO TAKASAKA
Performing as lead guitarist in über-hip rock bands as well as practicing as a visual artist, Masato Takasaka thinks about his studio practice in musical terms, describing his aesthetic as an iPod Shuffle: playing the greatest hits of 20th century avant-garde art, with references to constructivism, dada, pop and minimalism alongside the back catalogue of his own greatest hits.
Architecture and design history collide in Takasaka’s mini-cities. Described as “techno-contemporary”, the exuberant chaos of his sculptural practice involves a process of working and re-working everyday materials in inventive ways to make something new. Bent, crumpled and endlessly interacting surfaces of Takasaka’s work explore limitless formal possibilities and combinations.
