Rotarians were there. Margarita Martin, Marsha Prentice, Mary Jeffries, Pete Hammer, George and Polly Rendon, and Terry Rifkin put on their rubber gloves and “got down and dirty” with mops, disinfectant, and sponges to make the rooms look and smell presentable to the tired and weary Marines to welcome them home. The pillows were lumpy and the sheets were short, but the hospital corners were in place and after the “Welcome Home” posters, entertainment packages and goodie sacks were put on the bed along with notes and toiletries, I am sure it was a sight for sore eyes and there was no doubt that our Marines would know that they returned to a grateful nation. Other Rotarians gave a cash donation, and some contributed in-kind items and goodies to add to the huge stash to be distributed. Donating time and elbow grease and working boots on the ground with one another in service was inspiring and the least we could do to welcome our brave men home. How wonderful to have them back on American soil and to know you were part of this special event for them. Each of our cleaning brigade truly made a difference. Semper Fi! President’s Messageby Al SoleySpring is in the air, time for renewal, rebirth, blossoming, and growth. Many cultures of the world still follow the traditions of few thousand years ago and “clean house” before spring, shake the old rugs, sweep the house, plant new flowers and trees, visit friends and family, and celebrate the arrival of spring with new attitude, new plan of action and a new mind set. When Spring arrives and the sun starts to shine we also try to shine brighter with a positive attitude, expecting to create better days by turning every obstacle into new opportunities. For over twenty years we called the Ritz Carlton Hotel home for our meetings. Compared to many other clubs our size, we met there for a very long time. We have been very fortunate to stay in one venue for so many years, but now is the time for change. Now we have a new home at the beautiful Laguna Cliffs Marriott, selected by you — our members. Let’s celebrate our arrival to the Marriott by beginning this Spring to revitalize the club. This is also the month of the Rotary Magazine, The Rotarian. What caught

members around the world. Now is the time to revisit those relations and make them stronger than ever, and grow them further in both quality and quantity. Greg Owens, our District Governor, says it best: “The Objects of Rotary encourage and foster the ideal of service as a worthy enterprise for the development of acquaintance, high ethical standards in all businesses, professions and communities to advance world understanding and peace.” Our world starts at home. Our new home will be the place for growth, friendship and love. It is from here that we take our message of peace and health to the world, through any of the six areas of Rotary focus: water and sanitation; disease prevention and control; child and maternal health; education and literacy; economic and community development; and certainly peace and conflict resolution.

Jeannie hankins began her career as a CPA with Alexander Grant & Company (now Grant Thornton). In 1989, Jeannie, her husband and a business partner purchased a small aerospace company in Brea, manufacturing fabricated metal parts for Boeing, General Dynamics and other companies. In 1994, both her husband and business partner passed away. In 1996, Jeannie joined the Brea Rotary Club, and quickly became active in the Brea community, serving on the Boards of the Chamber and the Boys and Girls Club. In 2000-2001, Jeannie served as President of the Brea Rotary Club, and had the opportunity to attend her first International Conference – in Buenos Aires!! Over the next several years, Jeannie attended International Conventions in San Antonio, Barcelona, and Copenhagen, as well as “making up” in other travels to England, France, Switzerland, Italy, Sweden, Holland, Austria and Australia. In 2000, another business partner joined Jeannie they began their developing proprietary products. In 2001, after moving her manufacturing facilities, she transferred to the Villa Park Rotary. Jeannie continued to serve on the Board in various positions, including Chair of the Foundation Committee when VPRC became a 100% Paul Harris Club. In 2011, Jeannie realized a life-long dream of living at the beach, and moved into her beachfront condo in San Clemente – requiring her to transfer to yet another Rotary Club. After attending most of the Clubs surrounding her new home, Jeannie realized that the strongest, most active Club in the area is MBSR!!!! In the few shorts months of membership, Jeannie has participated in the Golf Tournament and the Diamond Dig, and is looking forward to participating in the Lobsterfest. Jeannie’s interests are: traveling, bridge, walking on the beach, live theater performances, and participating in projects of the MBSR.
