Students know how to identify the characteristic properties of waves: interference, beats, diffraction, refraction, reflection, Doppler effect, and polarization. (Note that yours cannot be the same as another student’s to get the extra credit!)

• sound is a wave + waves concepts• it is a longitudinal or pressure wave

(“longitudinal” means “parallel” to direction of wave)

• with compressions & rarefactions (like a bunched slinky)

• it is produced by a vibrating object • what specifically produces sound in

voice & certain instruments (Examples: vocal cords, lips, reed, etc)

• it is a mechanical wave (needs a medium - no sound in a “vacuum” / outer space)

• sound travels fastest in solids, then liquids, then gasses

– (but slower in more dense gasses!)

• sound is slower than light (always!)• “pitch” means frequency, other

frequency words (tone, note, etc) • “loudness” means amplitude/energy• … measured in decibels, which is not a

linear scale• “echo” means reflection• how length of tuning fork dictates pitch

(determines length of standing wave that fits, & thus frequency),

– slide trombone, pipe organs, etc• sound also diffracts & refracts (rules?)

• timbre/consonance/dissonance – define• ear is human detector of sound; 3 parts

(x2 subparts), what each part does, damage to little hair cells that causes hearing loss

• Doppler shift: – when higher pitch– when lower pitch– pitch doing really– can use to determine speed of

moving source (there’s a formula)– (radar, stars moving away = redshift)

• Resonance & natural frequency– examples (tuning forks & pith ball ,

wine glass & opera singer, marchers across bridge, Revolution at Great America, swings, Tacoma Narrows Bridge, bee and pollen in flower)

• Beats: – caused by 2 frequencies close

together– but effect in loudness/amplitude– hear loud-soft “wobbling”– subtract to get beat frequency– Wa or Waaaaahhhh closer tuned?
