Moms in the Know began in 2004 as a tool to help Moms navigate the city of Charleston with children in tow. Over the years we have grown and developed to stay in touch with you and help you on your journey of parenthood by having four issues a year and an excellent website. Moms are also able to stay up to date by checking our facebook fan page and a twitter account.

In an effort to continue to improve and grow we have some more changes on the horizon. Our cover now reflects the fact that Moms in the Know is for all moms, in all stages of parenthood. My goal as an editor is to help moms by keeping them informed of all that Charleston has to offer families and by sharing great parenting advice ; just as your role as a mother constantly changes, so does this world in which we are raising our children. Moms so often are the navigators, guiding their families through all the different aspects of life. My goal as a mother is to be a well informed navigator by having lots of information on how to keep my family healthy, safe and ready to have fun at any moment. It all comes down to four areas that are important to all families: knowledge, health, home and recreation. With that in mind, each future issue will focus on one of these areas. The October issue will focus on knowledge with information on schools and preschools for your children. We’ll also inform you about opportunities and events that you can participate in that will help you become a better navigator. While the issue will focus on knowledge, you’ll still find all of our other useful features like the calendar, tips and information on great family friendly businesses.

Future issues will focus in turn on health, home and recreation. Please add your voice by sending us an email at [email protected], writing on our facebook page or giving us a call at 843-573-4846. We want to know what you find helpful, what you are struggling with, your great ideas, and your silly escapes.

Top Ten Great Things

#3 Establish Family TraditionsWe are continuing our list of some of the best things you can do as a

parent to help your children lead happy, fulfilling, useful lives. The first two things on our list were reading aloud and eating as a family . This

time we are focusing on creating family traditions .

Children thrive on routine, and family traditions associated with particular days or times of the year are the most enjoyable kind of routine. We all do the drill of getting out the door in the morning, or brushing teeth before bed-- those are the necessary parts of getting through a day. It is so much fun to have joyful routines as well-- rituals for celebrating a holiday or a birthday, an activity that everyone participates in every weekend, or a vacation tradition.

not only are these activities fun, they help make life predictable, comforting and safe. Experts say these kinds of rituals help create a “family identity”; they give a child the sense that he or she is an important part of a strong group. a recent study asked high schoolers to label themselves as happy, depressed, lonely, angry, and so on. Students who identified themselves as “happy” were most likely to say that they enjoyed spending time with their families. Most of the time I try not to look as far ahead as high school-- my children are nine and three-- but I do want to do as much as I can now to work towards making those more problematic years as happy as possible. SO! let’s bring on the rituals and family identity and get them in place. . . how do we do it? I’ve been polling moms I know for their family traditions, what works and what doesn’t.

Link traditions to things that recur regularly so you’ll be prompted to continue them.

When I asked moms to share traditions their families treasure, I heard about things done on a weekly basis--make your own pizza night and game night--and things that are linked to holidays, like an Easter egg hunt/brunch and a trip to a pumpkin patch at Halloween. One family makes an effort to put the “new” in happy new year by doing something new; they try a new food, visit a new place, play a new game.” One mom described her long established Christmas traditions: “My children get pajamas and a book every Christmas Eve. They get an ornament in their stocking so they can have their own tree when they leave home. Two years ago I tried to do robes instead of pajamas and there was uproar. They also have to match each other --even at these ages 14, 12, 11, and 9! right before bed we read Twas the night before Christmas.

Create traditions that fit your family, not what you think you ought to do.

you might have it in your head what you should be doing to be the perfect mommy-- I had one friend who found herself stuffing dozens of plastic Easter eggs with candy and then hiding them in her backyard at 2 aM by flashlight because she had been too busy to do it any sooner. Surely there are ways to create that family bond and still get some sleep, right? Try to think of the big picture-- how can you have your cake and eat it too? a better rested mom says, “We have our Sunday morning ritual of: rio gets to watch cartoons on PBS from whenever he gets up (usually between 7-7:30 and 9) while we get to sleep in. and then we all have a big brunchy breakfast together of either waffles, pancakes or crepes or something else. lovely!” another friend remembers how rigid their family traditions felt; her mother insisted on church attendance and formal meals that no one seemed to enjoy. She’s careful to avoid this in the time she spends with her husband and son.

If you don’t have family close by (or don’t get along with your family) create your own extended family.

If your family is close by, a lot of traditions just create themselves; you go to grandma’s house for Thanksgiving, or you all get together for family birthdays. It’s harder when you live an expensive plane trip’s distance away, or if there is friction between family members. a way to cope is to have your traditions include others in similar situations. a mom in Oregon who is far from her Iowa family has forged a connection with another family: “We do a weekly dinner exchange with friends who live a block away. They cook one week; we cook the next. We’ve been doing

it for five years this fall. There are, of course, sick weeks and busy weeks and out-of-town weeks, but in general, we do it! It’s so fun to pass the seasons together - outdoor summer meals, indoor nippy fall evenings with some kind of baked yumminess, etc. We just walk over or they come here. We started out saying the meal could just be dropped off or picked up occasionally, but that almost never happens now.”

The same friend also does a yearly trip: “We have an annual camping trip for the Perseids meteor shower in mid august each year. There’s a big group of friends who go along, and the wild huckleberries are always ripe then, so we always have huckleberry pancakes the next day. “

Ask your children for their input about what kind of traditions they would like.

One year my sister and her family were talking about the things they do for Christmas every year, and decided to do something new: they each wrote down an idea for a new tradition they’d like to try. She thought it was great to get her children’s ideas, and they stashed the list in their copy of a Christmas Carol so they could revisit the ideas (and add to them) the following year.

another friend quizzed her family about which traditions were the most enjoyable to them: “One of my children said [her favorite was] the notes they get in their lunches; another said hiding the Easter baskets, and another said beach cereal which is that they only get sugary sweet cereal at the beach so we always stop at the Piggly Wiggly on our way in before we cross onto the island. My 14 year old wants me to add that she loves that we decorate the tree on Christmas Eve. We then leave it up until Epiphany, January 6. She says it helps bring Christmas into focus and makes it special.”

In establishing your own traditions, try to come up with a good balance of weekly treats and seasonal routines, ones that forge a connection with other families and ones that focus on just your little family unit. routines can be a good way to pass on the values that are important to you, so consider volunteer work or spiritually centered activities. and keep in mind that nothing has to be set in stone. One friend told me, “I love traditions, but I hate to be a slave to them and keep doing them if they aren’t working, you know what I mean? Sometimes it’s important to revisit and revise things, too. If it feels like a chore instead of a joy, then it’s time to reconsider.”

Summer Safety Tips

Summer Safety Tips

S u n S a F E T y

Babies under 6 months:

• The two main recommendations from the aaP to prevent sunburn are to avoid sun exposure, and dress infants in lightweight long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and brimmed hats that shade the neck to prevent sunburn. However when adequate clothing and shade are not available, parents can apply a minimal amount of suncreen with at least 15 SPF (sun protection factor) to small areas, such as the infant’s face and the back of the hands. If an infant gets sunburn, apply cold compresses to the affected area.

For Young Children:

• Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outside, and use sunscreen even on cloudy days. The SPF should be at least 15 and protect against uva and uvB rays.

For Older Children:

• The first, and best, line of defense against the sun is covering up. Wear a hat with a three-inch brim or a bill facing forward, sunglasses (look for sun-glasses that block 99-100% of ultraviolet rays), and cotton clothing with a tight weave.

• Stay in the shade whenever possible, and limit sun exposure during the peak intensity hours - between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

• Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or greater. Be sure to apply enough sun-screen - about one ounce per sitting for a young adult.

• Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or after swimming or sweating.

• Use extra caution near water, snow, and sand as they reflect UV rays and may result in sunburn more quickly.

H E a T S T r E S S I n E X E r C I S I n G C H I l D r E n

• The intensity of activities that last 15 minutes or more should be reduced whenever high heat and humidity reach critical levels.

• At the beginning of a strenuous exercise program or after traveling to a warmer climate, the intensity and duration of exercise should be limited initially and then gradually increased during a period of 10 to 14 days to accomplish acclima-tization to the heat.

• Before prolonged physical activity, the child should be well-hydrated. During

Keep your family safe this summer by following these tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

the activity, periodic drinking should be enforced, for example, each 20 minutes, 5 oz of cold tap water or a flavored sports drink for a child weigh-ing 90 lbs, and 9 oz for an adolescent weighing 130 lbs, even if the child does not feel thirsty.

• Clothing should be light-colored and lightweight and limited to one layer of absorbent material to facilitate evapo-ration of sweat. Sweat-saturated shirts should be replaced by dry clothing.

• Practices and games played in the heat should be shortened and more frequent water/hydration breaks should be insti-tuted.

P O O l S a F E T y

• Install a fence at least four-feet high around all four sides of the pool. The fence should not have openings or pro-trusions that a young child could use to get over, under, or through.

• Make sure pool gates open out from the pool, and self-close and self-latch at a height children can’t reach.

• Never leave children alone in or near the pool, even for a moment.

• Keep rescue equipment (a shepherd’s hook - a long pole with a hook on the end - and life preserver) and a portable telephone near the pool. Choose a shep-herd’s hook and other rescue equipment made of fiberglass or other materials that do not conduct electricity.

• Avoid inflatable swimming aids such as “floaties.” They are not a substitute for approved life vests and can give children a false sense of security.

• Children may not be developmentally ready for swim lessons until after their fourth birthday. Swim programs for children under 4 should not be seen as a way to decrease the risk of drowning.

• Whenever infants or toddlers are in or around water, an adult should be within arm’s length, providing “touch supervi-sion.”

B u G S a F E T y

• Don’t use scented soaps, perfumes or hair sprays on your child.

• Avoid dressing your child in clothing with bright colors or flowery prints.

• To remove a visible stinger from skin, gently scrape it off horizontally with a credit card or your fingernail.

• Combination sunscreen/insect repellent products should be avoided because sun-screen needs to be reapplied every two hours, but the insect repellent should not be reapplied.

• Insect repellents containing DEET are most effective against ticks, which can transmit lyme Disease, and mosquitoes, which can transmit West nile virus and other viruses.

• The current CDC and AAP recommenda-tion for children over 2 months of age is to use 30 percent DEET. DEET should not be used on children under 2 months of age.

• The concentration of DEET in products may range from less than 10 percent to over 30 percent. Ten percent DEET only protects for about 30 minutes – inad-equate for most outings.

• The concentration of DEET varies signifi-cantly from product to product, so read the label of any product you purchase. Children should wash off repellents when back indoors.

For more information on DEET: http://www.aapnews.org/cgi/content/full/

• The playground should have safety-tested mats or loose-fill materials (shredded rubber, sand, wood chips, or bark) maintained to a depth of at least 9 inches. The protective surface should be installed at least 6 feet (more for swings and slides) in all directions from the equipment.

Summer Safety Tips

• Equipment should be carefully main-tained. Open “s” hooks or protruding bolt ends can be hazardous.

• Swing seats should be made of soft ma-terials such as rubber, plastic or canvas.

• Make sure children cannot reach any moving parts that might pinch or trap any body part.

• Never attach—or allow children to attach—ropes, jump ropes, leashes, or similar items to play equipment; chil-dren can strangle on these.

• Make sure metal slides are cool to pre-vent children’s legs from getting burned.

• Parents should never purchase a home trampoline or allow children to use home trampolines.

• Parents should supervise children on play equipment to make sure they are safe.

• Do not push your child to ride a 2-wheeled bike until he or she is ready, at about age 5 or 6. Consider the child’s coordination and desire to learn to ride. Stick with coaster (foot) brakes until your child is older and more experienced for hand brakes.

• Take your child with you when you shop for the bike, so that he or she can try it out. The value of a properly fitting bike far outweighs the value of surprising your child with a new one. For more information on finding the proper fit, go to http://www.aap.org/family/bicycle.htm#choosing

• Buy a bike that is the right size, not one your child has to “grow into.” Oversized bikes are especially dangerous.

• Your child needs to wear a helmet on every bike ride, no matter how short or how close to home. Many accidents hap-pen in driveways, on sidewalks, and on

bike paths, not just on streets. Children learn best by observing you. Whenever you ride, put on your helmet.

• When purchasing a helmet, look for a label or sticker that says the helmet meets the CPSC safety standard.

• A helmet protects your child from seri-ous injury, and should always be worn. and remember, wearing a helmet at all times helps children develop the helmet habit.

• A helmet should be worn so that it is level on the head, not tipped forwards or backwards. The strap should be securely fastened, and you should not be able to move the helmet in any direc-tion. If needed, the helmet’s sizing pads can help improve the fit.

• Children should never ride skateboards or scooters in or near traffic.

• All skateboarders and scooter-riders should wear a helmet and other protec-tive gear; wrist guards are particularly important.

• Communities should continue to develop skateboard parks, which are more likely to be monitored for safety than ramps and jumps constructed by children at home.

• While in-line skating or wearing Heelys, be sure to wear appropriate protective equipment and only skate on designated paths or rinks and not on the street.
