FOCUS ON FEEDBACK This term our teachers are focusing on feedback to improve student learning. Many studies have pointed to feedback as having more

impact on student results than any other teaching strategies. Feedback lets students know how they are doing while there is still time

to adjust and perfect their efforts. As I visited some classes last week many teachers were busy giving feedback to students to

improve their learning, as shown below.

RURAL CUP Last week Rural Cup captains gave their accounts of the games played in Canowindra and it was very clear that we are close enough

in points to win the 2017 Rural Cup if we are successful against Oberon High School later in the term. Mr Paterson explained that a

50 point difference is quite achievable in the final leg of the cup as many games against Canowindra were close. The students at

Molong Central competed with great spirit against Canowindra and displayed outstanding sportsmanship and conduct on the day.

For more details please see Mr Paterson’s report below:

The first leg of Rural Cup for M.C.S. took place on Friday, 12th May, Week 3. Unlike our previous visit to Canowindra 2 years ago when we travelled through a snowfall enroute, we had a beautiful sunny day to compete in a total of 40 sports and events throughout the day. Apart from chasing a first away-leg victory for the day, there were several new medallion and events included in 2017 competition. The inaugural Junior and Senior Quizmaster competition was a huge success, with the participants providing positive feedback about the event. Quizmaster involved several categories such as trivia and critical thinking components. The implementation of the Sportsperson of the day (based around involvement and sportsmanship) was also highly successful with 12 awards presented to Year 7 students, a junior boy and girl and a senior boy and girl from each school. The tournament was extremely close throughout the day with both schools participating keenly in all events. The level of competition was very even across 90% of sports and activities, often resulting in a draw or a 1 goal/try differential at the completion of games. This pattern continued as the lead ebbed and flowed for the first 4 sessions. Canowindra had a particularly strong Session-5 and M.C.S. required a 4-sports to 1 victory in the final session, in order to claim the overall victory. Unfortunately, Canowindra were too strong on day, defeating Molong 294 – 249. This is a total of 4.5 sports difference and the result could have been quite different if a few of the 1-point victories went the other way. This aside, it was a highly successful day, with students from both schools competing hard but fairly, with sportsmanship always at the forefront of each sport and activity. The camaraderie was again the standout feature between our two schools, which was once again extremely pleasing to see. Whilst it is always pleasing to come out victorious in any competition played throughout the year, the staff and students of M.C.S. place great emphasis and pride in the manner in which we conduct ourselves. I am very pleased to once again, commend our students on their conduct and manners displayed on this trip. Thank you to Canowindra for hosting such an enjoyable day! Canowindra were defeated by Oberon in their first leg of competition which now leaves all three teams in the running for the Rural Cup. Molong will need to defeat Oberon by a total of 55 points (5.5 sports) or more to claim the title for 2017. So, M.C.S.!! Let’s train hard over the coming 4 weeks and see if we can’t return the Rural Cup back to Molong Central School for 2017!!!! Mr. M. Paterson ,Sports Coordinator

CONSERVATORIUM VISIT On Tuesday, 2nd May, the students of Molong Central were fortunate enough to have students visit from The Sydney Conservatorium of Music. The musicians were on tour with Mr David Miller, Senior Lecturer and Chair of Piano Accompaniment, who is widely recognised as one of Australia’s leading pianists, chamber musicians and vocal accompanists. The musicians this year were Evan Kirby (tenor), Alexandra Thomson (clarinet), Dennis van Rooyen (guitar), Katherine Keeler (flute), Kaiyen Chen (piano), and Lauren Olofsson (cello). There were two concerts, one for both primary (K-6) and secondary (7-10), and they were thoroughly entertaining, not to mention educational! There was also a concert the previous evening where the musicians played a selection of chamber works. They were extremely talented and it was a fantastic concert. Many thanks to the Vis-Lowe and Ryan families who billeted students. This annual tour would not be possible without your help. Ms Deanne Millner and Mrs Elizabeth Byrne - Music

NEW TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM This year has seen a considerable investment in ICT across the school, with the purchase of 88 new laptops.

One of the areas benefiting from this increase is the Secondary School, where 60 new laptops have been made available for the use of students in three areas.

The school has provided a laptop trolley in the top of A block which caters for Maths and HSIE, the bottom of A Block which caters for English, Careers and HSIE and in the Tech room which covers STEM, TAS, Agriculture and Science.

Over just the last 2 weeks 19 classes have booked out the laptop trolleys using the online booking system and used them for at least one lesson with several classes using them for a number of lessons in the week.

These computers help supplement the BYOD program which operates within the school and allows staff to integrate ICT into their everyday teaching.

I heard a comment from a staff member recently that highlighted the value of this technology within the classroom, as he noted that the students were more engaged with the task and actually produced better results when they were using the technology.

Staff are now starting to use Google Classroom with their students which gives students access to the work from home via the internet and also allows for students to ask questions about assignments after hours when they are actually working on the task at home. Google suite enables students to access an online calendar, which can be used to track assessment tasks.

If you would like further information regarding the BYOD program or use of laptops at school please don’t hesitate to contact me. Miss Sally Pokoney, Science department

MOLONG ST JOHN AMBULANCE CADETS Recently a large parade of cadets in uniform were joined by guests, family and friends for the presentation of the 2016 Divisional Awards. Shane Aldridge was presented with the Junior Member of the Year recognising his excellent attendance, training level and volunteer community hours. The Most Improved Member of the Year was awarded to Talia Wherritt. This included the inaugural presentation of the Robert Taylor Memorial Trophy. Robert was a Cadet Leader with a charismatic personality and excellent leadership skills providing a positive role model to other cadets. Robert travelled from Dubbo to attend meetings and training often returning to do weekend duties in the local area. After completing his HSC Robert studied Nursing and moved to Newcastle for work at John Hunter Hospital. He loved his new career and planned to move back to Dubbo to study a Masters in Nursing. Late last year, at twenty five years of age, Robert suddenly passed away from an undiagnosed chronic illness. His memory and positive role model will continue to inspire other cadets to achieve their best. On parade Mr Glenn Bundy, a Registered Nurse from Dubbo, presented the Casualty Simulation badges, which will be displayed on Cadet and Junior uniforms. Casualty Simulation is the art of creating real life injuries and acting the part of the wounded person. Cadets have learnt how to make a moulage of bruises, burns, wounds, fractures and shock during training meetings and create an appropriate scenario using these skills. Promising creative talent was displayed in the small team activities. Students who are interested in St John Ambulance Cadets can join by attending a meeting on Thursday evenings, 6-8pm in the school hall. Mrs Julie Dean

PHYSICS EXCURSION TO THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY

Friday, the 5th of May 2017, at 8am in the morning, the Year 11 Physics Class embarked on a cool trip to The University of Sydney’s

Camperdown/Darlington campus to expand their classroom learning and infuse it with practical activities in Preliminary Physics Unit.

Well this drive was particularly longer than usual because of few accidents on the road and some ongoing roadworks. We reached

the destination with excitement and curiosity to learn and evolve.

From the parking in the Darlington campus to the Physics building in Camperdown campus was a good one kilometre walk. As a

matter of fact, this walk was very refreshing given that we had a long drive. After a brief wait, we were greeted by Tom, who is the

co-ordinator of this program. Jacob and Matt along with myself were ushered to a big Physics lab with plenty of equipment. We were

flabbergasted by the size of the lab. We don’t know how the next two and half hours went by. They invested these two and half hours,

going through several Physics concepts and experiments that enhanced their theoretical understanding in real time. Matt and Jacob

both successfully analysed the graphical representation of motion. They also saw how the modulation of amplitude/frequency of

visible light, microwaves and /or radio waves can transmit information. They really saw the value of taking this trip.

Both the boys then identified areas of current research and used the available evidences to discuss some of the underlying physical

principles used in application of physics related to waves, such as: Global Positioning System, CD technology, the internet (digital

process) and DVD technology; all cool stuff. They also solved problems to apply the inverse square law of intensity of light to relate

the brightness of a star to its luminosity and distance from the observer.

Overall, it was indeed a very productive day. We all gained hands-on experience valuable to our understanding of how Physics relate

to real world. Once we finished, we had a quick stop at KFC to snack before we started our long journey back home. Well we were

delayed by heavy Friday evening traffic; however we arrived back in Molong at 9.30 pm.

I would like to congratulate both Jacob and Matt on their super attitude, enthusiasm and excellent commitment. They were great

company and kept us all entertained throughout the journey with their witty and charming conversation. We are now looking forward

for our visit to Kickstart Physics excursion for HSC Physics in 2018.

PRIMARY NEWS Boys Softball On Monday 15th May, the boys Softball team travelled to Orange to play in the annual Western Region Gala Day. We had 3 games to play in quick succession. A game of Softball goes for 75 minutes and we only had a 15 minute break in between each game! Our first game was against Millthorpe Public School. This was by far our toughest game of the day. Millthorpe had an outstanding pitcher and the boys found it very difficult to get a touch on the ball. Persistence and determination though found us finding the home plate and our excellent fielding and defensive skills helped us finish the game 14-2 in front! Our second game was against Calare Public School. This was a relatively inexperienced Calare side and it was so wonderful to see the spirit in which our boys played this game; encouraging the Calare players and congratulating them on their effort and hard work. Molong won this game convincingly. Our final game was against Wellington Public School. Some sloppy play crept into this game as tiredness started taking effect. This was a very good experience for the boys, as they had to dig deep and overcome some disappointing plays. With great comradery and support for each other, they did so at the bottom end of the game and finished in front 20-4. The boys will now play Cooerwall Public School (Lithgow) in the Finals. This game will be in the next few weeks and we will keep you posted on their progress. The team was: Max Yelland, Carter Kirby, George Betts, Charlie Bohringer, Will Thomas, Tim Rapley, Flim Cummings, Hamish Meehan, Bailey Peshka, Sam Foy, Lochie Bohringer, Robert Heath.

Rugby League On Monday 8th May the boys Rugby League team played Calare Public School in the second round of the PSSA Knockout competition. We came up against a very strong and skilful Calare side and they made us work hard throughout the game. There was some excellent defensive play and some great attacking runs but Calare were the better side on the day coming away with a 30-12 win. It was great to have a Primary Rugby League team entered into the Knockout competition. These boys were particularly enthusiastic and were a pleasure to manage. Many thanks to Lenny Punch for coaching the boys and giving up his lunch times and days off!

Peer Support Concludes! This week the Stage 3 students finalised the Peer Support program with our final debriefing. During this debriefing, the Peer Support leaders were asked to share a skill they have developed and improved over the course of the Peer Support program. The Peer Support leaders gave a range of responses including improvement in their ability to give explicit instructions, confidence in themselves as a leader, assertiveness and patience. When asked what the best thing about Peer Support is the leaders responded that is was great to see relationships within each group grow. They enjoyed seeing their group members have fun and have a laugh together. They though it was great to make friendships with other students they would not normally interact with and they felt that the Peer Support sessions allowed students to develop their teamwork skills and self-confidence. What fantastic outcomes for our students!

Girls Hockey On Friday 12th of May the Molong Central girl’s hockey team travelled into Orange to play their first knock out game against OSSA (Orange Small Schools Association). OSSA scored first but we were not disheartened. It remained 1-0 at half time. Not long into the second half Taylah Hobbs scored a goal to equal the score. Everyone thought that it was going to be a draw. With 5 minutes to go Little Laura Lapins scored a cracking goal so that we were up 2-1. From then on we only had to defend and we did. We WON! We would like to thank our wonderful coach Mrs Thornhill, all the parents for transporting the girls into Orange and especially OSSA for putting up an excellent fight. We all had lots of fun and are looking forward to our next game.

Kindergarten and Stage 1 Excursion On Friday the 5th of May, Kindergarten and Stage 1 went to Bathurst for an excursion. The weather was gorgeous and on arrival to the Bathurst Sheep and Cattle Drome, the students ate their recess, played on the swings and kicked some balls at the soccer nets. We all proceeded to the back of the hall to the cow stalls where Steve taught us about the many different breeds of cows they had there. After that, we went back into the hall and looked at all the interesting farm artefacts they had around the walls. Some interesting things were a saddle, a fox, some skulls and a rabbit hide! The show was great! We watched a range of animals walk up to their place on the stage including donkeys and goats. Some students got to milk a Fresian cow and said it felt warm, soft and squishy! Then some students hand fed sheep, bottle-fed a baby lamb and patted soft rabbits. We all thought the whip cracking was fantastic and loud! After that, we split into two groups and half of us visited the animal nursery while the other half went on a hayride. The students were surprised when there was not actually any hay, but a tractor pulling a carriage. They loved standing in it while it bumped around the trail. We left the Sheep and Cattle Drome and headed to the Dinosaur Park to have lunch and play on the amazing equipment. Some of their favourite things were the slide, climbing tower and maze! Everyone was tired on the trip back and happy to be home again. We had a great time at the Bathurst Sheep and Cattle Drome and learnt so much!

Hi Everyone, Thank you to all those families who have returned their child’s permission notes for ‘National Family Reading Month’. If you would like a new record sheet they are available from the Library. Sheets may be returned to me during Weeks 6 & 7 for your child to receive a Merit Award for their participation. I have been greatly impressed this term with the conscientious students who are continuing to borrow in order to complete their PRC for 2017. Congratulations to Ben Burgess in 3/4 Thornbill for his efforts in completing the Challenge for this year. Last week saw the commencement of our Coding Club for Years 7 & 8. It was pleasing to see some enthusiastic participation during lunch as well as peer teaching. In the coming weeks the group will be looking at using block coding and the ‘scratch’ coding program. Makerspace activities will commence in the Library in the near future and be offered to the Stage 3 cohort one lunchtime a week. Hopefully there will be lots of creativity flowing! Have a wonderful week sharing books with your family.
