POTE’S NOTES Dear Nobles and Ladies: I would like to thank Chief Rabban Dan Smoth-ers & Lady Holly, and their committee, for all they did for the Potentate's Ball. The ball was really nice and Lady Marilyn and I enjoyed it very much. A big thank you to Ill. Dave and Jennie Brown and the Hot Sand Bugs for the hospitality they worked hard on at the Ball. I also would like to thank those who went on the Potentate's trip to the Dominican Repub-lic. We had a great group at a beautiful part of the world. Most of you will have already heard that we made a very painful decision to cancel the 2020 Moila Shrine Circus. We made that decision based on our concern for our members, their

families and our community. I would like to thank everyone who volunteered and helped with the set up and then very quick tear down of the circus this year. We had a great group of nobles and ladies who showed up to support our Temple at a very difficult time—thank you all again. As you know the circus is our number one fund raiser at Moila, and even though we did not actually have circus perfor-mances, we still had expenses associated with the non-event. I would like to thank all the nobles, ladies and advertisers who generously allowed us to keep their payments as donations to help offset some of the circus expenses. It has been great to see the support we have been receiving from the community dur-ing the upheaval caused by the changes in our daily lives caused by the virus. Our next important event will be the Shriners Hospital for Children Golf Tourna-ment, which will be held on April 25th. As you all know this is the major fund raiser for our Transportation Fund for the year. So please get a team together and play and/or sponsor a tee sign or donate to this important event for Moila. Coming up soon will be our Spring Ceremonial, which will be held on the evening of Friday, May 1st. Please get your candidates signed up and let’s make this a great ceremonial for our new members. Parade season is right around the corner, however, our first parade of the year originally scheduled for May 2

nd, the St. Joseph Apple Blossom Festival Parade,

has been postponed until later in the year. Let’s get all our units together and show our area what Shriners are about as soon as we are able to begin parade season. Also, the Imperial Session is in Kansas City this year. Let’s have nobles and la-dies attend. We are working with GreatLife to make our Mosque a great place to come and enjoy our facilities. Please support them. Thank all of you for what you do and remember we are Shriners to help our kids in our Hospitals. Ill. Sir Dan Baker “Fighting for our Kids”

From Your High Priest and Prophet Greetings Nobles,

We had a pretty good start to the new year, Dianne Johnson from the St. Louis Shriners Hospital for Children was at our February

meeting and presented a very interesting and informative program about our hospitals. If you missed it you really did miss a very in-

formative presentation.

As you are probably aware by now, we had to cancel our Shrine circus this year due to the outbreak and spread of the Coronavirus

(Covid-19). It was a VERY difficult decision to make. We all look forward to our circus each year and this will mark the first time in 67

years that we have not had one. We are all very concerned for the health and welfare of our members, their family and the public at

large. I feel that in light of the circumstances we did the right and responsible thing. I appreciate all the efforts of all those who had

helped prepare for this year’s shows and for those who had planned on working at the circus in any capacity. I am looking forward to

next year’s circus and anticipate an excellent show, and I am sure that I can count on you all to help promote the event.

Spring is just around the corner and along with the nicer weather comes parade season. Let’s all get our parade vehicles and horses and clown outfits ready and make this year a parade season to remember!! Also, along with Spring comes our Spring Ceremonial, if you know any Master Mason in good standing who you believe would be interested in joining us as a member of the World’s Greatest Philanthropy now is the time to get their petition in to be presented and voted on. I also encourage each and every one of you to support and attend your Lodge meetings. Remember that the Lodge is the very foundation of our fraternity and we need to encourage all of our membership to attend as many of our Lodge meetings as possible. This is where we get our members from and if we support them, then they in return are going to be more sup-portive of us. Remember we are all Masonic Shriners!! I would also like to remind everyone about our “Mix ‘n Mingle on the 3rd Wednesday of each month starting at 5:00 p.m. Come out and join us in the downstairs bar/dining room for fun, food, and fellowship (no business conducted) in a casual atmosphere. This is open to EVERYONE so bring a friend and prospective member and introduce them to Moila! I want to take a moment to strongly encourage all of our units and clubs, especially those in the local (St Joe) area to hold their month-ly meetings at our Temple. We have a nice and spacious room set aside for meetings, as well as the dining room/bar downstairs available. We have a beautiful facility and we need to take advantage of it. Brethren, I am asking for each and every one of you, your spouses and your children to lift up Illustrious Mark Morgan and his family and pray that the Lord God lay his healing hands upon Mark and make him well. And last, but definitely not least of all, a HUGE thank you to the Moila Mounted Patrol for their very generous donation to the Hospital Transportation Fund. You guys are definitely keeping the bar raised high!!! Until next time, yours in the faith, Douglas D Plowman

Statement of Shriners International relating to Imperial Session 2020

Shriners International is looking forward to hosting an

amazing Imperial Session in Kansas City this

summer! The Imperial Potentate, Director General of the 2020 Imperial Session and the staff of

Shriners International are closely monitoring quickly changing developments related to the out-

break of coronavirus (COVID-19) as it may impact the upcoming Imperial Session. Of course, the safety of our Nobles and their families is our highest concern. We are carefully reviewing the guidance provided by the World Health Organization and will be working in close collaboration with local health authorities to min-imize the risks associated with this virus. Each individ-

ual should evaluate their own heath situation in con-nection with the latest information provided by public

health professionals in determining whether they should travel. We have every expectation that the 2020 Imperial Session will be an outstanding and extremely

positive experience. We anticipate providing additional updates and information related to Imperial

Session 2020 as developments warrant

FROM YOUR CHIEF RABBAN

“Elevated to a higher Dignity and Honor” By the time you read this the 67th Annual Shrine Circus should have happened but was cancelled because of the guidelines and socially expected reasons for cancelling large events at this time. It was one of the hardest decisions your Divan has made. Hopefully, this will pass quickly and we can have fun with our members at other events this year. The Divan and the Membership Committee rolled out an incentive award system that will continue to build over time, with a point system to incentivize members to participate in events, and most of all to help with the member-ship of Moila Shriners. If there are any questions please feel free to ask a Divan member. May 1st is fast approaching for the Spring Ceremonial and Apple Blossom Parade weekend. Please continue to sup-port your Blue Lodge and ask all of the members and new candidates to consider joining the Moila Shriners and sup-porting the Shriners Hospitals for Children. If you were not able to attend the February Temple Meeting, we were hon-ored to have a representative from our St. Louis hospital present a video of Alec. The video was not very long and would be a great masonic education piece at a Blue Lodge. The Divan members have this video and will be more than happy to share it with anyone that is interested. I would like to make a note that Holly and I were honored to represent Illustrious Sir Dan Baker and Lady Marilyn at the Z-aGa-Zig Potentate’s Ball in Des Moines, Iowa on February 29th. They have a lot of good things going on at their Shrine and they continue to help us with their Clown unit at our Circus. It was nice to have many of their Nobles come up to me and say how proud they were to also be a member of Moila. Thank you for your time and commitment to the Moila Shriners and I look forward to seeing you around the temple events in the coming months. Fraternally yours in the faith, Dan Smothers Chief Rabban

WORDS FROM WOODY!!!!! Hello Moila! Welcome to Spring. It’s shaping up to be a busy and beautiful time of year. As I am writing this, we are all sad that the Moila Shrine Circus had to be cancelled. Lots of kids will be disappointed for sure. This weekend, The Mounted Patrol will have an INSHP meeting in Gardener, KS. We can’t wait to see our friends. Let’s all hope and pray we get to proceed with our July activities in Kansas City, MO!!! Next month, we will have our C.S.S.A. meeting in Springfield, MO. Next Saturday, March 21st, the Mounted Patrol will hold our first bedding sale of 2020! Al-ways a good time at Dave Clark’s place. Dave Clark and yours truly, AKA Woody, currently have Bullseye down for maintenance. He should be good as new for our first parade in Weston next month!!! Last month, Ill. Gene Davenport and Noble Dave Clark, presented two checks to the Shriners Hospital in St. Louis. One check was for $3000 from our bedding sales, and the other was for $200, from an appearance at a dear friend of Woody’s, grandson’s birthday party. The kids loved it. Also, the Mounted Patrol presented the Potentate a check for $1000 for the Moila Endowment Fund, and another $1000 check for the Transportation Fund. See them pictured below with Hospital Vice-Chairman and Moila noble Kim Evans. Friendly reminder: Don’t squat with yer spurs on. Woody

FROM THE ORIENTAL GUIDE

My wife Frances and I had a very nice time at the Oriental Guide Leadership Conference in Tampa, Florida March 4th thru the 8th. We wish to thank all the Nobles of Moila for the opportunity, and the confidence you have placed in us. We visited Shriners International headquarters in Tampa and enjoyed it very much. If any Noble gets a chance, every-one should visit. You will not be disappointed. I should not have to tell you that our membership is a huge challenge for us now and it is every Noble’s problem. We have such a fine organization and we do so much for the Children, that we have to find a way to survive. A few topics we covered at the conference were Shrine Law, Fundraising, Budget, Finance and a very interesting report on how we need to protect the Brand. We discussed event ideas and different ways that we can include the family. Frances and I continue to plan for 2024, but any ideas that we have to make our Temple better now, should be given consideration. I see that Shriners Hospitals have now been helping kids defy odds since 1922. That’s almost 100 years now. We have to find ways to keep our Shriners Hospitals for Children alive. This is important because if we won’t who will? It was brought up that we need to “Get Just One”. With this in mind, I hope you will join me in doing just that. I hope to meet as many Nobles as possible this year and get your ideas. Yours in the faith, James Jeffers Oriental Guide

IN MEMORIUM

MASONIC CORNER This is a very good insight into being a Mason. It has been used in some lodges after they have raised a new Master Mason. I hope you will enjoy reading it and reflect upon this with your Masonic ca-reer. My brother, you are now, technically speaking, a Mason, but wheth-er or not you are going to be a Mason in reality rests entirely with yourself. The members of this lodge deemed you honest in your expressed desire to be a Mason, and I urge you to show the fraterni-ty that they were not mistaken in their judgment of you, and that they have not erred in admitting you into our ancient and honorable or-der. It would be well, my brother, at this time to ask yourself the question, “What is it to be a Mason?” Do you think that membership in a Masonic lodge makes you a Mason? If you have the proper conception of Masonry you will admit that it does not, only in name, for membership in a Masonic lodge can no more make you a Mason than membership in a musical club can make you a musician. How-ever, it is quite apparent that if you are so inclined and have natural musical talent, in such membership you will find helpful stimulus and pleasant fellowship with congenial and kindred spirits, and so it is in Masonry and the Masonic lodge. It is the involuntary thoughts of your heart and the voluntary acts of your life which determine you character as a man and a Mason. There are four classes of men in this world: First, those who are Masons neither in name or nature; second, those who are Masons in name only; third, those who are Masons only by nature, and lastly, those who are Masons both in name and nature, and this class are God’s noblemen; but if I could not be numbered with them, I had rather be a Mason by nature, that is, at heart—than a Mason only in name. In taking the degrees the practice of many commendable virtues was enjoined upon you, only a few of which, perhaps, you can recall at this moment, and too many for me to reiterate just now. Allow me to exemplify by talking of another rarely explained symbol—that of a point within a circle. I will inform you the point represents an individual brother—that is you; the circle, the boundary line of your duty toward God and man, beyond which you should never suffer your passions, interests or prejudices to betray you on any occasion. The circumference of this circle—the boundary line of your duty—is clearly defined in the Ten-ants of Masonry and elucidated by the Cardinal Virtues of Masonry, and while you keep yourself thus circumscribed, my brother, it is impossible that you should materially err. I congratulate you, my brother and may the Great Architect of the Universe guide, guard and protect you through life and endow you with a competency of Divine wisdom that by the secrets of this art you may be the better enabled to display the beauties of godliness to the honor of His holy name. From the Assistant Rabban

Ladies and Nobles of Moila

As you all know, we had to cancel the circus. No mater how you look at it there are always two sides to a pancake no matter how thin. We now call on you the Nobles and Ladies to respond with help. We can over come this. Together we can do anything!!!!

GET CREATIVE When faced with a problem, get creative. When confronted with a difficult challenge, get creative. Focus not on the difficulty of the situation. Instead, become enthusiastic about the creative possibilities. Don't get bogged down in what's already been done. Take advantage of your opportunity to create a new approach. Don't be stopped by those who say it can't be done. With a positive creative approach, it can indeed be done. Step back, give yourself some perspective, and open your mind to all the possibilities, even the seemingly outrageous ones. When you're confident that you'll come up with a creative solution, you will. History is filled with examples of people who have used creativity to turn negative situations into positive value. Get creative, and we can do the same. -- Ralph Marston

Lady Karen and I have had several meetings about our Fez-Tival of Trees this fall. We have met with the Downtown Association. We hope to have the Fez-Tival of Trees downtown with the St. Joseph businesses. Our hope is to make this event one for the public to enjoy, bring more people downtown, and most of all give our Moila Temple an opportunity to create awareness of our philanthropy. We need your help to make this a great event. We need people to help serve on our committees. We hope and plan on making this a weeklong event. It will be in conjunction with the Christmas events downtown. We hope every unit and club is willing to help man this event and contribute a tree, wreath or basket. Lady Karen and I will keep you informed about this new concept. Since my last note in the Messenger, Illustrious Sir Dan has asked us to visit as many Masonic lodges as possible during the coming year. I have had the pleasure to visit the Lodge in South St. Joseph and help with 2 third degrees. I have also attended the lodge in Wathena. All of these have been great experiences. I was also inspired by the award event at Hiawatha Lodge. At one time, there were members of the lodge that received 50- and 75-year pins. The total years of experience exceeded a thousand years. I am part of the planning committee for Membership and the Hospital Golf Tournament. We are ALL part of membership. We appreciate your help to keep Moila Shrine growing, along with the Masonic Lodges. Lady Karen and I will be in Tampa for the AR School on March 10-13. We hope to pick up many concepts to help with membership and our fund-raising activities. Everything we do is for our hospitals and kids. Fraternally, Bill Couldry AR.

Editorial Without Words 50 Year Celebration

Our Shriners are well familiar with the news photograph of

Shriner Al Hortman carrying young Shriners Hospitals for

Children patient Bobbi Jo Wright, and how that photo went on

to inspire the Editorial Without Words statue seen at fraternity

buildings and Shriners Hospitals for Children. The image was

taken 50 years ago this June and we're celebrating this mile-

stone at Imperial Session and inviting you to be part of it by

sending in your photos of the statue and sharing a few words

about what the Editorial Without Words means to you. All sub-

Misfit Trivia

I was born in Torrington, Connecticut in 1800. In 1805 we moved to Hudson, Ohio, where my father opened a tannery. One of my father’s apprentice's son would ironically play a part in my future. Do you know who the son was? At the age of 16, I attended a private school in Massachusetts. I was studying to become a Congregationalist minister, but due to lack of funds had to quit.

The murder of Rev Elijah P. Lovejoy, who was an abolitionist, by a pro-slavery mob made me publicly declare “Here before God, in the presence of these witnesses, from this time, I consecrate my life to the destruction of slavery!”

In 1846 I moved to Springfield, Massachusetts, where I learned a great deal about the underground railroad.

In 1850 the Fugitive Slave Act was passed. The law required all states to aid in the capture of runaway slaves and it provided stiff penalties for anyone who would help a runaway slave. Angered greatly by this law I founded the League of Gileadites, an organi-zation that would protect and help runaway slaves even if it were necessary to use violence. Once the league was founded there were no runaway slaves taken back in Springfield. Remembering Spartacus and the slaves rising up to fight for their freedom, I thought that the slaves could do the same thing here, if they had the means to arm themselves. I figured the nation being a nation that always took up the cause of an underdog would stand behind their cause.

In 1855 I headed for Kansas. My sons informed me that the pro-slavery forces were trying to bring Kansas into the Union as a pro-slavery state. So with a group of abolitionist settlers I moved to Kansas in order to try and stop Kansas from becoming a pro-slavery state. Once I got there I realized it couldn't be accomplished peacefully, it would take terrorism, fraud and deadly attacks to try and bring Kansas into the union as a free state.

In 1856 , I realized this could only be accomplished by violence. In Pottawatomie my group and I attacked pro-slavery settlers. None of the settlers ever owned slaves, but two of them were bounty hunters that had gone after escaped slaves in the past. Five of the pro-slavery settlers were killed. Later this attack was called the Pottawatomie Massacre. In Kansas and surrounding states my abolitionist forces and I attacked pro-slaver forces. Two of my sons were captured, and in order to obtain their release I traded a colonel from the Missouri militia that we had captured.

On July 3rd my men and I attacked a small town in Virginia to acquire weapons. My intentions were to give these weapons to the local slaves so they could fight for their freedom. Do you know the name of the small town that I attacked? My men and I were captured in this attack. I was found guilty of treason against Virginia and was sentenced to be hung.

On December 2,1859, I walked up the gallows and was asked if I had any last words. Do you know what I said?

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Thank you to all the nobles and ladies who helped to move all the

circus supplies into the Civic Arena, and then had to turn around and

move them out a very short time later. It was great to see the support of our

nobles and ladies at a time when we really needed their help, knowing

that many of them had to put their own personal agendas on hold

during a time when we were all facing new and unique challenges.

MISFITS TRIVIA ANSWERS The apprentice’s name was Hesse R. Grant, the father of General Grant, later known as President Ulysses S. Grant.

My name is John Brown. The town in Virginia that I attacked was the armory at Harper’s Ferry. My actions sparked a liberation movement among enslaved Americans. My last words at the gallows were ”I John Brown , am now quite cer-tain that the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away but with blood. I had, as I now think, vainly flattered myself that without very much bloodshed it might be done.” I am considered by some as the father of the American civil rights movement. Said best by David S. Reynolds, Brown is hailed as the man who “killed slavery, sparked the Civil War, and seeded civil rights movements.” The popular Union marching song “John Brown's Body” further cemented Brown’s legacy as an martyr and American hero. John Brown was made a Master Mason on May 11

th 1824 at Hudson

Lodge No.68 in Hudson Ohio. Brother Brown was called from labor on December 2,1859 and is said to have been bur-ied with Masonic Honors.
