A huge dustbin kept by the Corporation of Chen-nai on the corner of the
Electricity Board Road near the DABC Apartments has gone missing over the past fortnight causing problems for local resi-dents who are unable to find a spot to dump their household waste.
The garbage bin itself was placed only some months ago after numerous representations to the Corporation of Chennai. Previously there was no collec-tion point for garbage in this
vicinity. We were happy with the facility. However, now with con-tractors digging up the road near the place where the garbage bins were originally kept, it has gone missing,” complains, Shruti Iyer, a resident of DABC Apartment.
“We don’t know who took our dust-bin and where it has been kept now. As a result of this, now we see people randomly throwing garbage on the street corner rais-ing quite a stink,” she adds.
According to residents, the absence of dustbin has led to an unusual problem other than the routine breeding of mosquitoes and stink emanating from the
strewed garbage. “Stray dogs have started raving the garbage dumped on the street in search of food. In the process, these dogs not only end up leaving a mess
around the dump site but also some-times drag the poly-thene bags containing household waste with their mouth and leave it randomly outside the gates of some homes,” laments Go-vindan Kutty, a local resident. “This is in-deed a problem. The conservancy worker
who comes home in the morning to collect the household waste picks up an argument if we ask him to clear the polythene bag dumped by the dogs outside the gates. He thinks we have left the garbage there and questions why can’t we keep it inside the house and hand it over to him when he brings the tricycle,” he adds.
“It will be in the interest of this entire neighbourhood if the Corporation of Chennai traces the dustbin and places it at a location convenient to all of us to empty our household waste properly,” says Gopi, another local resident.
Little Hearts Fun Home and Day Care, Panneer Nagar celebrated their annual day at Hotel Radha Regent in a unique way. Dance, singing, graduation speech and much more
by the tiny tots made it a memorable evening for all gathered at the hall.

It is time for land own-ers in Mogappair to get set and proceed to re-
move invasive species See-mai Karuvelam (prosopsis juliflora) which is consid-ered as the greatest hazard to the environment. The
species was introduced in Tamil Nadu during the 1960s as a means to gener-ate firewood but soon it has turned out to be a main source of groundwater de-pletion and destruction of soil fertility.
Now, a big banner in-sisting on uprooting the karuvelam trees in the pri-vate lands has been put up near the Mogappair East Bus Depot by the Greater Chennai Corporation. The land owners in the areas, coming under Zone 7, Ambattur, have been asked to remove the trees by em-ploying private workers. If they fail, then the Corpora-tion will remove it and
collect money from the owners.
The Corporation has taken the initiative to re-move the Karuvelam trees following the orders of Madurai Bench of the Ma-dras High Court, which has declared a war on the species in Tamil Nadu. It
is known that environmen-tal activists and farmers have been insisting on re-moving the Karuvelam trees for several years as they pose threat to the flow of water bodies. It is said that the trees suck water in the area and are the pre-dominant reason to make the land dry.
Several studies also sup-port the view that the Ka-ruvelam trees are harming the eco system and contrib-ute much to the drought. Following the Court’s or-der the drive to remove the Karuvelam trees has been initiated and the Collectors and the Village officers in each district are in full
swing to uproot the trees in many areas.
“We have decided to implement it in our neigh-bourhood as well. There are a few grounds where we have spotted these trees, which have huge thorns,” explained a Cor-poration official requesting
anonymity.“It is a good move. But
I don’t think I can employ anybody to remove the trees. Let the Corporation do it and send me the bill. It is difficult to get man power to do this work in urban area. We can chop them but uprooting in-volves machine power and not that easy. Earth movers have to be employed. It will cost us too much be-cause they have to do the work only in a ground or two. Instead Corporation can issue tender and allot this work to a private play-er and in turn can collect money from us. It is known that the wood of Ka-
Time to weed out an invasive species
ruvelam trees can be used for making charcoal, which is financially beneficial” says one of the land owners in Eri Scheme, Mogappair West.

After making Aadhaar manda-tory for filing income tax returns and applying for a permanent ac-count number (PAN), the govern-ment has moved to make Aadhaar-based e-KYC (know your customer) mandatory for mobile phone con-nections.
In a notification late Thursday, the department of telecommunica-tions (DoT) directed all mobile phone service providers to reverify existing customers, prepaid and postpaid, using their unique Aad-haar identity number and biometric details. They were told to complete the exercise by early next year.
Aadhaar-based e-KYC would also be mandatory for customers procuring new SIM cards. It is an-other step towards making the use of Aadhaar all-pervasive in a coun-try where it is already being used to better target beneficiaries of some government subsidies and welfare programmes. On Tuesday, the gov-
ernment said Aadhaar would be mandatory for filing income tax returns as well as for obtaining and retaining the permanent account number (PAN) that taxpayers need to quote in their returns. From 1 July, every taxpayer will have to quote Aadhaar while applying for a PAN and when filing tax returns. Existing PAN holders will have to disclose their Aadhaar numbers to the government by a date that will be specified later. In case they fail to intimate their Aadhaar number, taxpayers will have the PAN allotted to them deemed invalid.
The move to link mobile phone connections to Aadhaar, adminis-tered by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), comes after the Supreme Court said in February that all phone numbers in India should have verified users. The court said this during a hearing on a case brought by Lokniti Founda-tion, a non-profit organization.

Visually challenged individuals unable to know the bus numbers find it difficult to board buses at the bus terminus and stops. Neth-rodaya, an institute for the visu-ally challenged represented this issue to the State Government on behalf of their community to es-tablish an audio alert system at bus stops and bus terminus. The Gov-ernment of Tamil Nadu sought the help of experts from Indian Institute of Technology Madras to design this audio alert
system. IIT Madras came up with the design of the system wherein all the state transport buses will be fitted with an elec-tronic system which will alert the visually challenged commuters with a beep sound when they are waiting for the buses in the stops and when the buses are approach-
ing the stops. The bus number will be conveyed through audio mes-sage to the commuter who holds a handheld remote device. Neth-rodaya shared valuable sugges-tions in design of the system like easy availability of spare parts for the handheld device and other aspects like the device being wa-terproof to avoid failure when the commuter gets drenched in rain etc. The Tamil Nadu State Gov-ernment disbursed the funds within a quick span of time and the associated electronic instru-ments have been fitted in the state transport buses in Chennai in the most frequently used routes.
The first handheld device was presented to the founder of Neth-rodaya Mr. C. Govindakrishnan by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Edappadi K. Palanichamy.

From saving up pocket money when they are young to the day they re-ceive a student loan, it is important that they have a grasp of finance. Here are ways you teach your child how to earn, how to spend and how to save it.
1. TEACH THEm AbouT THE moNEy: Your child may be under the impression that money comes out of a cash machine in the wall or a plastic card. It is never too early to teach your children about finances, especially as money can seem almost invisible to them at times. Tell them that the bank is looking after the money you earn. Play shops not just with plastic toy coins, but with real cash.
2. mAkE sAviNg FuN: As your child grows it can be good for them to realise that the bills come and have to be paid. You don’t want to overwhelm or wor-ry them but it is good for them to realise that things like electricity gas, food and other items have to be budgeted for each month. Giving pocket money from around age three can help children better under-stand the value of money, especially if you encour-age them to save towards something they dearly want. A good way of en-couraging saving at any age is to reward them, ei-ther by matching what they put aside or agreeing to put something towards it.
3. CouNT THE CosT: Talk-ing about how you earn your money and how you then spend it is an excellent
Rather than just saying “We can’t afford it”, ex-plain why. Talk to your children about all the dif-ferent things that have to be paid for, including tax and national insurance, along with mortgage/rent, coun-cil tax, utility bills, insur-ance, phone and broad-band and the weekly shop. Add costs for hobbies or club memberships, and give them a clear picture of the difference between a wage and disposable in-come once all the necessi-ties are paid for, which will come as quite a surprise.

life skill at all ages, and helping with shopping is a great start. By the age of 10, they should be able to go into a shop and buy a snack or drink, and know exactly how to count out the money and the change they should receive.
4. TEACH THEm To buDgET: Start by always giving them pocket money on the same day. Once they are old enough, encourage them to write down what they spend so they know ex-actly where their money goes. There will definitely be some tricky moments
when they spend the lot immediately and then start pestering for more, so agree from the start on what you will pay for and what they will pay for, depending on age. Don’t buckle under pressure, especially to start with, although as they get a bit older be prepared to provide the occasional loan that must be paid back on an agreed date.
5. TEENAgE TRAumAs: Get-ting a first job is a financial rite of passage and often a horrible one, not least be-cause teenagers often em-brace it with such innocent enthusiasm. It is heart-breaking to watch their good cheer melt away as they are faced with less than minimum wages, long hours and grumpy custom-ers and employers. How-ever, this isn’t the moment to encourage them to give up so you can subsidise them. It’s the hardest way to learn the value of money
– but it works far better than any parental chat.

A tree on Ori Sa-lai in Mogappair East that was par-
tially uprooted during Cy-clone Vardah in January this year has been axed by the Greater Chennai Corporation.
Mogappair Mail had re-ported earlier that the tree was precariously slant-ed with parts of its roots cut, both due to Cyclone Vardah as well as the on-going road digging work as part of constructing the Storm Water Drain. Due to the slanting tree, the work on laying the storm water drain was disrupted around it.
"Workers had to dig the road leaving the area near the tree. Now we don't know what happened, they
removed the tree and they had to remove the iron rods too, which were laid beneath. Other than this place they have already laid concrete on the storm water drain," says Venka-traman, a resident or Ori Street.
"Even before they start-ed the work, they should have uprooted the tree. While digging the road
they had to slightly deviate so as to accommodate the trees. Now it is like redo-ing the work. Again they had to dig in straight line and iron rods had to be fixed. They left this por-tion alone uncovered with cement concrete. We are carrying out construction work. It is really difficult for the workers to bring the material inside crossing the
pit. A temporary slab is put up even then it is not com-fortable,” says Saravanan, a construction worker, employed at a building site next to the tree.
However, not everyone is happy with the move of the Corporation of Chen-nai to cut down the tree. Some even allege that the tree was axed due to pres-sure from the building owner alone. "As it is we are facing the one of the worst droughts. This is the time when we should be nurturing trees instead of cutting them down. They must have at least relocated the tree to another place as it being done in some cities. The tree that was axed ac-tually provided good shade and breeze for us," says a neighbouring resident, requesting anonymity.
5 women held for stealing drillsFive women were arrested for allegedly stealing drilling
machines worth Rs 2 lakh from a private firm in Ambattur Industrial Estate. The theft happened two days ago, police said. Police narrowed down on the accused with the help of CCTV footage. The women gained entry into the firm by bending the window grills with crowbars and cutting the rods with a hacksaw, police said. The theft came to light the following morning when employees reached there. The Ambattur Industrial Estate police registered a case based on the complaint of the firm's manager. Police inspector of the crime wing, Kamala, collected CCTV footage from the company. The visuals revealed the women stealing drills, police said.
Police nabbed five women near the Ambattur Indus-trial Estate bus terminus. During interrogations, they admitted to stealing the machines.
