Intended Learning OutcomesStudents who complete the module successfully should be able to demonstrate:

1. A broad knowledge of key movements and historical developments in the medium of film and the institution of cinema;2. An understanding of different approaches to the history of film, including aesthetic, technological, institutional andeconomic histories; and 3. An ability to relate films to their historical contexts of production and reception.

Teaching and Learning MethodsThe teaching strategy will be based on the standard History of Art and Film model of one lecture and screening and oneseminar per week. The screening is included in the student workload model as 'supervised time in studio/workshop': it isregarded as a compulsory session for students to attend as the films will be shown in the University Film Theatre using thelarge screen and correct aspect ratio.

The module will explore important movements in the history of film (e.g. German Expressionism, Soviet montage cinema,French new wave) and key developments in the history of the film industry (e.g. the advent of talking pictures). It willtherefore provide a baseline of key subject knowledge appropriate for the first year of an undergraduate programme. (Thiscontent was previously covered by a Media and Communications module MS1000 Introduction to Cinema which has beenwithdrawn.

Intended Learning OutcomesBy the end of this second year module students should be able to:a) Work as a member of a team, producing a 2-5 minute piece of video drama.b) Film and edit a short video drama using modern digital video equipment independently and as part of a team.c) Adapt or write de novo a script for the video.d) Critically analyse in written form the techniques employed in making the video and its intended effect.

Teaching and Learning MethodsStudents will be divided into groups of 4 to 6. Each team will work towards the independent creation of a 2-5 minute piece ofvideo drama, filmed and edited using modern digital video equipment. The main taught part of the module will consist of 6 x 3hour lecture/workshops followed by a three-week gap for filming and editing and a final screening session in week 10 of thesemester. The final Video Drama piece will be awarded a group mark based on its successful exploitation of techniquestaught in the module. Individual assessment will be by means of a 2000-word Production Assignment (describing thetechniques employed in making the video and its intended effect).

Teaching and Learning MethodsThis is a core module for both History of Art and Film Studies students. The emphasis on this module is on supervised, self-directed learning. Students are required to research and write a 10,000 word dissertation, on a subject of their own choice,and to this end are instructed in the selection, researching, writing and presentation of their research topic and appropriateresearch methods, including archival and bibliographical research. They are also given individual tutorials with the member ofstaff appointed as their supervisor. Students are also required to give an oral presentation on their chosen subject of approx5 minutes duration plus 5 minutes for questions/answers. Although this is not assessed, written feedback from theirsupervisor is provided.

Intended Learning OutcomesBy the end of this final year module students should be able to:a) Evaluate the complex relationships between French films of the period 1930-55 and the society and culture within whichthey were produced.b) Assess the critical literature on the subject.c) Identify and locate films and film makers within various contexts, industrial, institutional, technological, social, cultural,economic and political.d) Demonstrate this competence in a written essay and examination.

Teaching and Learning Methods1 lecture and 1 seminar a week, plus a 2 hour screening.
