Modernize Your Data Center to Transform Your Business Intel® and IBM® Global Services fuel IT transformation with mission-critical migrations

The Data Center is EvolvingToday’s organizations are challenged to meet increasing business demands, gain competitive advantage, and keep budgets flat, while IT departments must deliver more reliability, availability, and scalability from mission-critical database infrastructure than ever before. But managing and securing growing volumes of data on aging and expensive infrastructures has become a major obstacle to business growth. Maximize Memory, Minimize Cost, and Simplify Deployment with IBM System x Servers

IBM System x advancements in physical server scalability, reliability, and performance can help solve business challenges, enabling companies to innovate and thrive. With eX5, IBM’s 5th Generation of the industry leading enterprise x86 servers, IBM engineers have radically expanded the capabilities of x86 servers. Leveraging the deep history of IBM innovation, eX5 servers offer the most advanced X-architecture yet, to help companies improve application performance while managing growth, complexity, and risk. IBM System x was graded #1 highest ever 4-socket score for system performance1, and has received three #1 world record scores for virtualization2, a # 1 application performance result on 2, 4, and 8-socket servers with two-tier SAP*3, and IBM System x servers were rated #1 in Sever Customer satisfaction for 8 consecutive quarters4.

With IBM System x servers, business can:

• Support Critical Business Workloads: Utilize the unmatched enterprise RAS capa-bilities of IBM’s x86 servers, including the most complete Predictive Failure Analysis features of any x86 product, Memory ProteXion for reduced memory losses, and FlexNode Failover to get back online faster.

•MaximizeMemory:eX5 systems offer memory expansion, yielding optimum per-formance for many workloads. The unique

“The extended memory

capabilities offered by

IBM enables the x3850

levels of productivity...

this becomes an

excellent platform for

clients’ most data-

demanding applications.”

– Boyd Davis VP and General Manager of

Intel®Data Center Group Marketing

System x capability to expand memory in-dependently of the processor has unlocked an unprecedented amount of configura-tion flexibility. If applications or server virtualization require huge quantities of memory—more than the chassis can hold—eX5 allows expansion of the chassis with an external MAX5 memory chassis, for the most memory in the industry in each of these classes of servers. With these con-figurations, System x servers can deliver 5 times the memory of comparable 2-socket x86 servers, and 1.5 times the memory of comparable 4-socket x86 servers5.

• Minimize Cost: With the addition of the 2-socket System x3690 X5, System x has lowered the acquisition cost of enterprise servers, while preserving the ability to ex-pand and extend memory as needed. With more memory, companies can run more VMs per processor, which helps lower per-processor software licensing costs. System x servers also increase perfor-mance per watt of electricity consumed6, helping organizations budget, plan, and con-trol power usage.

• Simplify Deployment: With single points of management and remote administra-tion, eX5 systems are built for simpler qualification, faster deployment, and easier administration. With more affordable IT, companies can reduce IT costs and re-allo-cate resources to fuel innovation.

Optimize Performance and Value with Intel® Xeon® Processor E7 Family

Top-of-the-line Intel® Xeon® processor E7 family delivers ideal performance for the most data-intensive workloads. With improved scalability and increased memory and I/O capacity—but at lower total cost of ownership (TCO) than traditional, propri-etary solutions—Intel® Xeon® E7 processors allow IT managers to cost-effectively adapt to changes in short-term business demands and address requirements for longer-term business growth.

Intel® Xeon® processor E7 family is designed for an organization’s most critical business needs. The powerful and reliable Intel® Xeon® processor E7 includes:

• Advanced reliability and security features, including Machine Check Architecture (MCA) recovery

• High memory capacity with Non-Uniform Memory Access (NUMA) for high perfor-mance, low latency, and highly parallelized memory access

• Increased scalability with multi-core & hy-perthreading, offering up to 10 physical cores, running up to 20 threads

• Pervasive encryption capabilities includ-ing Intel® AES-NI, that enables faster, more affordable data protection and greater security

• Increased bandwidth with Intel® QuickPath InterConnect enables internal scalability and high performance database clusters like IBM DB2® pureScale®

• High physical consolidation ability with Intel® Virtualization Technology that delivers high availability, failover, and con-solidation of databases onto a single server

Together, IBM and Intel® focus on IT transformation through mission-critical migrations,

As organizations optimize their infrastructure, deploy more soft-ware, and move to the cloud, they need a simplified environment and scalable infrastructure with more processing power. As IBM System x has evolved, Intel® has shifted from smaller workloads and departmental applications to more enterprise workload levels—and is now used to support critical business workloads.
