    Chinese nationalist feelings aroseagainst the foreign Qing from Manchuria.The state had become increasinglyunable to perform its many functions like

    tax collection, flood control, socialwelfare, and public security. The fact thatthe rulers were foreign made them feelless connected to the affected people.This added to stress that caused theTaiping uprising in 1850-1861 Both China and Japans lackedopen global trade as to keep out foreigninfluence. China rejected British requestfor open trade and Japan had originallyturned away European countries and theUS who demanded open ports for trade.

    The failure to keep the foreign Americaforces out led to the takedown of theruling Tokugawa Shogunate

    In Japan the Meiji restoration wasall about instilling nationalist feelings ofunity. The emperor tried to bring backold Japanese tradition to unite the peoplein bringing back the old Shinto religion asthe national religion of Japan getting ridof a foreign Buddhism. This brought

    necessary unity for the industrialrevolution.

    Change: The Anglo Japanese treaty wasabolished which in turn consideredJapanese political and economic equalsto western imperialist countries. Change: Japan changed from informalempire of the US to a politically andmilitary dominant country able to defeatRussia, China and in the process gainedcontrol of Taiwan and Korea.

    Continuity: A new constitution wasinstituted, it drew heavily of Germanexperience, introduced an electparliament, political parties anddemocratic ideas.
