(Aragon, Louis 1897-1982). La Naissance de la Paixpar Rene Descarte. ballet danse au chateau royalde Stockholm le jour de la naissance de SaMajeste (1649).But published: Paris: BibliothequeFrancaise pour les amis de l'auteur, J. Dumoulin, (1946).#280 of 300 copies signed by Aragon on the colophon.

When Rene Descartes was 54, he went to Stockholm atthe invitation of Queen Christina. It is said that becauseDescartes refused to dance at a court ball, QueenChristina charged him with writing the verses for a courtballet, La Naissance de la Paix. The ballet was composedfor performance on 8 December 1649, the 23rd birthdayof the Queen. It celebrates the Peace of Westphalia at theend of the Thirty Years’ war, which was more or lesswon by Sweden.

According to a recent study by Richard Watson, "theevidence of Descartes' authorship is virtuallynonexistent... Almost certainly the ballet was written byHelie Poirier, a professional writer of French verse."References: Watson, Richard A,. Descartes’s Ballet(2007)

Johann Salvator (1852–1911?). Archduke and Prince

of Austria, Prince of Hungary, Bohemia and

Tuscany. Die Assassinen. Die Assassinen: Ballet

in drei acten, in scene gesetszt von Carl Telle, Musik

von D. J. Forster.

Wien: Wallishausser, 1883. 12mo. Original green

wrappers (chipped). Libretto for ballet in three acts

set in Jerusalem in 1197, probably taken from the

legend of the Sultan Saladin* in his military

campaign against the Assassins and their leader,

Hassan Scheich el Djebel (“the old man of the

mountain”).

Act II of the ballet has an early and fascinating use

of electric lighting. At the premiere, Milli Stubel

appeared on stage illuminated from head to foot by

Edison’s new light bulbs.

The author is Johann Salvator (1852–1911?), a

member of the Tuscan branch of the House of

Habsburg-Lorraine. He was Archduke and Prince of

Austria, Prince of Hungary, Bohemia and

Tuscany. After renouncing those titles, he was

known as Johann (John) Orth. He disappeared

while sailing with his wife Milli in July 1890 and is

believed to have died when his ship

encountered a storm near Cape Horn. He was

declared dead in absentia in 1911.
