lobby desk model.

The concept behind this lobby desk and wall installation was to use and treat material such that the end result would look like it had been carved right from the wall material itself. It’s placement was to be in the lobby of a yacht design fi rm. The design is grounded in the tradition of well-crafted materials and the nastalgia which surrounds boat-making.

residential model.

This residential design studio required a thoughtful design response to Christopher Alexander’s “A Pattern Language” which attempts to assign a design language, or pattern, given a certain set of circumstances and desired outcome. The design responses are then articulated within a system which gives them a coherence.

out of the box.

The assignment was to have 5 groups build a wood frame. Starting with the same framework, each group would then plan the interior of the box to achieve an aesthetic that evoked a pre-chosen piece of music. No artifi cial lighting was used.

library model.

This studio required the design of a library in a small eclectic community. I chose to use opacity as an overall design fi lter, evoking a sense of transparency or privacy depending on the function of the location being used. The concept layered nicely lending constant movement with people’s silhouettes, changing landscape as bookshelves emptied and fi lled, and lights were turned on and off .

found object sculpture.

The assignment was to design and construct a structure of myself which articulated joints, scale and personality out of found objects. During the construction of this sculpture, I mixed cement, drilled through glass, cut metal, designed sophistacated fasteners to achieve an elegant and cohesive look. All parts were found recycled objects. She was one of 3 out of a couple of hundered scultptures chosen to stay on display.

generative process 1: material.

This exploratory studio focused on the manipulation of material concentrating on material properties, joinery/detail, light, spatial order and time/meaning. After weeks of experimentation, I was fully engaged in treating rigid material in such a way that it would seem to become fluid. By cutting specific patterns through rigid sheet material, liquid shapes became possible.

1. CUT RIGID SHEET MATERIAL.

2. INFORM SHAPE WITH JOINT.

3. LET MATERIAL FREE-FORM.

4. OBSERVE STRUCTURAL RESULT.

generative process 2: light.

After exploring the structural implications of cutting sheet material and controlling its resulting form, I began to experiment with light. The following were all questions that were considered as a result of this exploration:

What am I interested in seeing built? What sort of process is engaging to me?What is important to me about design process? What is design that is done by me?How do I criticize my own work? How well do I fail? How well do I use intuition during process? What are my different methods of generating to try when one path

seems to be stuck?

senior thesis model.

THE WELL is the reinvention of the gas station. This model took more than 100 hours to complete. I designed and crafted the entire model. In order to create the fi xtures, I sourced acrylic and MDF. I used a Rapid Prototyping lab to lasercut each individual piece and then assembled them afterward. In order to complete this model to this level of detail and craft, it required complex planning, scheduling and experimentation.
