Installing thePaper
Introduction
Installation
The Model WP-233 dot matrix printer has one ofthese electrical interfaces:
RS-232Current Loop
This manual is split into the following mainsections:
• Introduction• Installation• Operation• Maintenance• Printer Test and Setup• Communication
Please follow the precautions listed below whensetting up your printer. They are designed to helpyou keep your printer working at its best.
• Plug your power supply into an appropriategrounded outlet.
• Place your printer on a flat hard surface, likea tabletop.
• Keep your printer out of direct sunlight.
1. Remove the printer cover by pressing on thegroove patterns to pop the front edge up. Liftoff the cover.
2. Press the rocker switch to the left. The lightwill go off.

3. Unroll several inches of the paper.
4. Cut a straight edge on the paper roll if it isjagged. This will facilitate the entry of thepaper into the printer.
5. Slide the paper through the slot connecting thepaper compartment and the printer compart-ment. You can slide it in about one-quarterinch before it stops.
6. While holding the paper in place, press therocker switch to the Paper Feed position. Theprinter will activate, and a rubber roller will pullthe paper into the printer compartment. Holdthe switch in the Paper Feed position until thepaper emerges from the top of the printermechanism.
7. When an inch of paper has emerged from thetop of the printer, release the Paper Feedbutton.
8. Now pull the paper through the printer, untilseveral inches are exposed.

To Remove thePaper Roll
12. Put the paper spindle into the paper roll asshown below, and place the roll with thespindle onto the snaps near the back of theprinter. Turn the paper roll so as to take up anyslack in the paper feeding to the printer. Makesure the roll of paper turns freely. If it does notturn freely, the paper will jam and will possiblydamage the printer mechanism.
1. Advance the paper about one inch beyond thepaper cutter by using the Paper Feed switch.
2. Lift the paper roll away from the printerhousing and cut the paper feeding to theprinter with scissors. Try to make the cut assquare as possible to help the next time youreload the paper.
3. Pull the remaining paper through the printermechanism. Be sure to pull the paper fromthe top (paper cutter side).
WARNING! Pulling the paper out of the back ofthe printer will damage the print mechanism.

Connecting andPowering upand Your Printer
Operation
Maintenance
1. Attach the appropriate cable between theprinter and your indicator. The connector onthe printer side is “keyed” so that you cannotplug the cable in the wrong way. This meansthat the pins should be positioned so that aslight pressure will seat the cable properly. Donot force the pins in. Doing so could damagethe cable.
2. Plug the power cord into the back of theprinter. Plug the transformer into an appropri-ate AC outlet. The unit will power up automati-cally and print Ready. This means the printeris ready to print.
The paper feed switch on the printer is a rockertype switch. Push the left side of the rocker switchto toggle the printer on and offline. Push the rightside of the switch to advance the paper.
Your printer is now ready for printing.
The printer stores characters for printing until oneof two things happens:
1. The line buffer is filled.
2. It receives a line feed (hexadecimal 0A) or acarriage return (hexadecimal 0D) code.
When (1) or (2) occurs, the printer prints out thecontents of its line buffer. If the buffer is emptywhen the carriage return is received, the printersimply advances the paper one line, leaving ablank line in the printout.
When printing becomes faint or difficult to see, replace the ribbon in your printer with an EpsonERC-09 cartridge ribbon.

5. Install cartridge. Be sure the ink cartridge isinserted firmly to prevent weak or irregularprinting. The cartridge must be properlyseated and aligned for best printing.
6. Turn the cartridge “knob” (marked by an arrow)clockwise to stretch the ribbon.
7. Replace the cover.
8. Replace the paper.
You may insert the ribbon cartridge if there isalready paper in the printer.
Hold the cartridge as shown above and slide itover the paper and into the printer compartment.Be sure the paper goes between the ribboncartridge and the ink ribbon.
If you get ribbonink on the printercase, wipe it offimmediately. Onceit dries it is difficultto remove.

Printer will ignore all other control codes.
According to the American Standard Code ofInformation Interchange (ASCII), there are 32control codes in addition to the codes for theprintable characters. (Control codes are sent asdata, but the receiving device interprets them asabbreviated ‘’instructions”, communication - statusmessages, etc.)
The printer recognizes these control codes:
WP-233 Printer User’s Manual30
Back SpaceCode 8
Line FeedCode 10
Carriage ReturnCode 13
Double WidthCode 15
Double HeightCode 14
Upon receipt of this code, the printer erases fromits buffer the previously received character. This isuseful in correcting typing errors for programs thatsend data both to a video screen and the hardcopyprinter. Remember that if you type more charactersthan the printer can print on a line, the printer willautomatically start printing.
The printer handles this control code in exactly thesame manner as carriage return (control code 13)except when a line feed immediately follows acarriage return. The line feed code is ignored if it isimmediately preceded by a carriage return. Thedefault setting is 7.6 lines per inch.
Whenever a carriage return code is received, theprinter will print out the current contents of itsbuffer, then clear the buffer to get ready for addi-tional data.
This control code tells the printer to switch to thedouble height character line. The control code canbe sent at any time on a line, it need not be the firstcode received by the printer after a carriage return.
You cannot mix normal and double height charac-ters on the same line. Once you select the doubleheight, the printer will remain in that mode until itreceives a carriage return or line feed. A line printcaused by a buffer full condition will not clear thedouble height command. This means that the“wrap around” print line will also be double heightif the double height command was sent before theline buffer was filled.
This control code tells the printer to switch todouble width character printing. The control codeshould be sent as the first character on a line. If itis received after half the maximum characters perline were sent then the printer will ignore allcharacters on the last half of the line.
You cannot mix normal and double width charac-ters on the same line. Once you select the doublewidth, the printer will remain in that mode until itreceives a carriage return or line feed. A line printcaused by a buffer full condition will not clear thedouble width command. This means that the “wrap

Enlarged printing may be selected by sending boththe double height command (code 14) and thedouble width command (control 15). The controlcodes may be sent in either order, but because ofthe double width restrictions, the codes should besent at the beginning of a line.
Example of Control Codes 14 and 15:
When the printer receives this control code it willimmediately reset the sequence number to 00000.
A standard character line is made up of ten dotlines. Eight of these dot lines are used for theprintable character and two are used for spacebetween lines. When using character graphics it isdesirable to eliminate the two blank lines so thegraphic characters connect together. Sending aCHR$(17) which is control code 17 anywhere on aline of data will stop the printer from putting spacebetween that line and the next. If a CHR$(17) is noton a print line, the normal space between lines willbe printed.
WP-233 Printer User’s Manual32
Dot GraphicsCode 18
The mechanism used in printer prints one line ofdots across at a time. This means that when it printsone line of characters it has actually printed ten linesof dots where the first eight lines make up thecharacter and the last two lines are blank for thespace between character lines. By using theCHR$(18) control code, you can tell the printer whichdots to print for one whole dot line. Since there are144 dots per line, you must follow the CHR$(18)control code with 144 bits of information. For everyplace there is a one in the 144 bit pattern you send, the printer will print a dot. Rather than receive one bitat a time the printer expects to receive the informationeight bits at a time. This means that after receiving aCHR$(18) the next eighteen 8 bit characters itreceives will be printed as dots to form one dot line.
To figure out the dot pattern values to send after theCHR$(18), you will need some grid paper. A largesheet with 144 grid boxes across would be conve-nient. If such a large sheet of paper is not available, you could divide your pattern in half and work with 72grid boxes across. Divide up your grid paper bydrawing a heavy line down every 8 boxes across. Now fill in each box of the grid that you want to beprinted. Now do the following procedure to computethe eighteen values which describe your desired bitpattern.
Imagine placing the number sequence over each ofthe first eight grid boxes.
Now add together all the numbers above the boxeswhich are filled in or have a dot as in the exampleabove. In our example, we would have 2 + 16 + 32which equals 50. The 50 becomes the first entry of adata statement which would be followed by seven-teen more numbers computed in the exact samemanner as the example.
Once you have the eighteen values in a data state-ment, you need simply run a program which PRINTSa CHR$(18) followed by the data value read from thedata statement. Don’t forget to end all of your Printstatements with semicolon. This will preventcarriage returns CHR$(13) from being sent, whichwould become part of the eighteen data values forwhich the printer is waiting.

User ProgrammableCharacter
Code 19
By using CHR$(1) you enter the Custom Charactermode. This allows you to design and print yourown 6 x 8 character by inputting data. A DATAstatement is made of numbers that represent arow of dots which when READ all together, willmake up your character. To design your character, follow the example below. You should notice thateach number in the DATA statement correspondsto one row in your character. To design a charac-ter, follow these steps:
Example 1:
Example 2:
WP-233 Printer User’s Manual34
1. Use quad ruled paper to design your charac-ter.
2. Number 8 consecutive rows like this:
1248163264128
3. Now design your character in dot form (seethe example below).
4. Add together all the numbers from the columnon the left, counting only where you haveplaced a dot in a row. In our example, the firstcolumn has three dots located in rows 4, 8,and 16. Added together they equal 28.
5. Put your final total for each column into a datastatement in column order.
The DATA statement in your program will read:
DATA 28, 34, 65, 65, 54, 34
The next step is to tell the printer your newlydesigned character. To do this you must send aCHR$(19) followed by the six numbers youcomputed above. Here is an example of how thiscan be done.
